Seen the news this morning about loads of people getting stuck in the snow AGAIN!!
Every year we are warned to only travel if we need to, but clearly some think they know better and put themselves and others at risk.

Exactly. Then they are interviewed to moan about the inconvenience, neglecting to notice that they are contributing to everyone's inconvenience! Different perceptions of need, I think...

PeanutButterCupCake · 05/02/2012 09:55

How do you know they didn't need to travel?
We are a bit rubbish in the UK, few flakes and everyone panics and everything grinds to a halt Grin

lisad123 · 05/02/2012 11:03

I know some people HAD to travel, but I'm pretty sure most didn't.

i was watching some twat neighbour driving his car out today, it was all over the place, lucky he didn't smash up someones parked car

callmemrs · 05/02/2012 11:06

I imagine many of the people who get stuck were en route somewhere when the weather turned bad. And it's not always that simple (or affordable) to stop overnight somewhere. I'm sure there are some people who just make bad decisions too, but I think it's a bit judgemental to imply that anyone who gets stranded has been reckless. What exactly should someone do if they are travelling, maybe on their way home to family, and bad weather strikes en route ?

I've just seen on the news that a fucking fully grown woman fell through a frozen lake in the park and had to be rescued.

Stupid twat Angry

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 05/02/2012 11:14

DP is his grandad's primary carer and as such needs to go out in it today. I wouldn't mind if it were not for the fact he has a totally impractical car for this purpose and is an utter clot and will no doubt fall over.

I love the snow I do Hmm

Dustinthewind · 05/02/2012 11:14

Not enough people down in the south know how to drive in snow either, and that causes a lot of problems. Too much accelerating and braking, and a very poor understanding of what reduced friction can do to a vehicle's tyres and ability to steer.

So he's obviously not one of the 'some people' mentioned in the OP, OLS. Confused

TwoStepsBack · 05/02/2012 11:15

That type of thing annoys me Worra - where rescuers have to risk their own safety for the sake of idiots.

Like the prats that go hiking up mountains wearing a t-shirt, shorts and a pair of flip flops just an hour before it gets dark!!

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat · 05/02/2012 11:17

Oh i'm dreading tomorrow. Everyone in the UK will be expected into work except for teachers and so the whole of the UK will start whinging en masse about how lazy teachers are...

gorionine · 05/02/2012 11:17

What do you do when there is no snow when you leave to go somewhere but there is a lot of it two hours after when you have to go back home?

So yes, got stuck in the snow with a friend for two hours last night (trip that should have lasted 15 minutes) The other option would have been for us to spend the night in her car with two 5 yo and a 7yo, not really that great either.

NearlyMrsCustardsHardHat Why are teachers not expected to be in school tomorrow? they certainly are where I work.

WorraLiberty · 05/02/2012 11:20

I would have slapped her and thrown her back in!

This is probably why I'm not a rescuer Blush

LaurieFairyCake · 05/02/2012 11:23

DH's headteacher is incredibly annoying about snow because as far as she's concerned everyone can get there if she can - she has a 60k Range Rover Hmm

She even works in the same tiny-cut-off-at-the-slightest-chance-of-snow village as 3 members of her staff and didn't offer them a lift and then complained to their managers when they didn't make it in.

And she never decides to shut the school til about 8.15 - and DH and all the other faculty heads set off at 6.15 to try and get there. So last time DH got a phone call at 8.15 to say don't bother coming in when he'd already driven 10 miles (half the journey) - of course by then the roads were packed and very icy and he got home at 1.30.

So 7 hours in a car causing hassle for NO REASON. When he could have been at home planning/marking/ etc.

Scheherezade · 05/02/2012 11:23

Gori, had you not seen the weather forecast?!

lisad123 · 05/02/2012 11:26

The thing was most of us knew the snow was coming at about 6pm yesterday. Leave early or don't go at all. It's madness out there. AA are receiving 1500 calls an hour! I hate driving in snow! I also don't think teachers should be made to risk life and limb to get into school either. Head at dd1 infant school used to drive around in her 4x4 and pick up staff! Madness imo

Dustinthewind · 05/02/2012 11:26

The weather forecast?
Grin Grin Grin

Yes, and she probably talked to the pixies at the bottom of the garden too, just about as reliable.
I should be looking at heavy snow right at the moment. there's about 2" from last night and nothing since.

gorionine · 05/02/2012 11:27

I did but as they have warned about about snow for the last 2 weeks without a single flake falling, I did not pay much attentionWink

We did go out in the snow yesterday, as did PILs and parents. It was DD's drama show and we didn't want to pull out (she had a main part) and it wouldn't have been easy to cancel the show.

But our car is good in snow.
And PIL/parents were travelling mainly by main road/motorway.

We all got home fine and without too much difficulty, just more slowly than normal.

Some cars out though were not capable of driving in the snow and that caused big issues. Their wheels were just going round and round, and going nowhere up the hills. Hence some cars were being abandoned on main roads - which are still there and the gritters can't clear the roads as a result.

Now this was at night, 9pm, and it had been snowing from 1:30pm, so they really should have not been there. You need to know your own car and it's capabilities. And if it is rear wheel drive - stay home or find alternative methods of transport!

Didn;t help as our buses were all stopped and the roads hadn't been gritted other than early morning. But the taxis were al out and about fine, and the trams were running too.

coccyx · 05/02/2012 11:29

then tough you got stuck!
