I might just be biased through only having had freeview till recently, but (apart from Thomas) don't you find the commercial channels a bit overwhelming? The kids on them seem more brash as well, and more badly behaved.

Or am I missing an amazing, calm, educational channel? We have tivo so we can skip adverts now.

YANBU I agree.

Though sometimes CBEEBIES is a bit TOO bloody nice. CBBC has some good stuff on but shows far too many repeats of Tracey Bloody Beaker (I actually like the programme) so every so often I like to flick over to CITV and watch Almost Naked Animals (top toon) or FleabagMonkeyface (gross).

The kids don't mind, they usually wander off to do something else.

pictish · 03/02/2012 16:59

Yes I agree. I only have cbeebies on because I hate adverts and shit brash cartoons and disney shite.

This is not snobbery, just a personal preference.....if I'm going to tolerate kids tv, I'd far rather the gentle niceness of cbeebies over the commercial clamour of those other nasty channels.

FlightRisk · 03/02/2012 17:06

Ok CBBC has deadly 60 (and its spin offs) copycats and horrible histories but CITV has Horrid Henry who is just the best.

I'm always chuckling away at Henry especially when he turns into a monster at the very annoying Perfect Peter. Grin

DS hasn't watched Cbeebies in a very long time so I don't really need them now. but he did used to enjoy the tweenies and teletubbies. His favourites were on channel 5 though, Noddy, High 5 and Thomas.

pictish · 03/02/2012 17:14

Oh aye - that's right - before we had the Freeview, ds1 used to watch Milkshake on Ch5 - which was brilliant!

Roly Poly Olie was a big favourite of mine.

Scheherezade · 03/02/2012 17:21

I remember noticing, when I was young, that all the naughty & less bright kids watched CITV....

Hairynigel · 03/02/2012 17:23

Yanbu, I love the beebies! I do like milkshake on ch5 though

MosEisley · 03/02/2012 19:10

YABU. Nick Jr is great! Peppa Pig & Ben & Holly are my favourites. Diego and Dora good too. I don't like all the ads though so record and fast forward (on Sky).

MosEisley · 03/02/2012 19:11

Just realised my post makes it sound as though I watch these programmes by myself and for myself! I do, really Of course the DC love them too"

Meglet · 03/02/2012 19:13

Yanbu.

Luckily mine have been so brainwashed by BBC programmes they don't like commercial channels. They whinge when the adverts come on and ask for cbeebies again.

EdithWeston · 03/02/2012 19:15

There was a whole thread a while ago when poster after poster admitted they had not been allowed to watch ITV children's programmes in their childhood, because they were considered inferior by their own DMs (indeed back then the word "common" was used as the reason).

Now, who was it said that what happens to us as children informs how we parent?

MrsHeffley · 03/02/2012 19:38

CITV has Curious George but it also has Annabel's KitchenShock-who on earth commissioned that???????

chandellina · 03/02/2012 19:42

Yanbu, the US programs are the worst - my son is noticeabley ruder after hanging out with his American cousins

olivo · 03/02/2012 19:43

YABU!! give me Ben and Holly, Humf and Peppa Pig any day! Although Charlie and Lola is pretty good......

DressingGownQueen · 03/02/2012 19:44

I wasn't allowed to watch ITV when I was small!

My dd is not really into TV yet, but I only have freeview so here it is CBeebies or nothing!

Petrean · 03/02/2012 19:45

I totally agree, CBeebies and CBBC are excellent channels!

cabbageandbeans · 03/02/2012 19:51

Cbeebies all the way - adverts brain wash young minds. I am totally against them. We buy Peppa pig DVD's and occasionally we watch 5 on demand so as to avoid adverts. My daughter once watched nick junior at a friends house and still bangs on about it now - she'd really like to see mickey mouse again (her words not mine). But I remain a TV nazi and cbeebies or carefully selected DVD's are all my kids are getting.

SenseofEntitlement · 03/02/2012 20:00

I laughed when DH told me he was only allowed BBC as a child. Now I totally get where MIL was coming from.

When I was little it was the houses in cul de sacs with double glazing and shiny cars that watched BBC. "Normal" houses watched ITV.

Flisspaps · 03/02/2012 20:04

Can't stand CBeebies.

We are a Nick Jr house, brash adverts and all. Apart from the Huggle Buddies adverts. They make me stabby and occasionally make me wonder if the smugness of CBeebies is worth it for never having to hear that fucking wanky advert jingle ever, ever again.

DoodleAlley · 03/02/2012 20:08

Actually we prefer milkshake in our house. Give us Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly, Bananas in Pyjamas etc any day.

MrsHeffley · 03/02/2012 20:11

I think it's a bit narrow minded to only watch CBeebies and CBBC though, there are some other bits and pieces on the other channels that are quite good.

My kids used to love Meg and Mog,Pokoyo and the afore mentioned Curious George-all good shows. Now they love Backyard Scientist on Pop which is brilliant and a really educational. They also love a bit of Horrid Henry on Sat morning as a treat. Not sure why anybody would ban their kids from them.

Re adverts they need to be trained to see through them as life isn't an advert free bubble. My kids are quite good at identifying which adverts are showing shite and which aren't.They also never nag for stuff.

rshipstuff · 03/02/2012 20:28

I don't much like any of them. Have got all the Peppa Pig, Dora, and Charlie & Lola episodes stored on computer and can watch any of them.

TheCokeMachine · 03/02/2012 20:39

Oh how I love the beebies, there are so many nice progams, it is a godsend when I need to do a spot of housework.

But...I'm really hating some of the newer stuff...for example Mike the Knight is a Crock of Shite. And Charley Bear...really...just rubbish CGI crap. Those programs seem a little like 'fillers' against the other stuff - I even enjoy a bit of Waybuloo or ITNG.

My mam never let me watch ITV childrens programs when I was little, it was considered 'common'. Which makes me laugh now (and whinge like hell then) because we lived in a council house on a not too nice estate, but my dear old mam, she wanted to make me posh!

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 03/02/2012 20:46

I only ever let my kids watch cbeebies, just so there are no adverts

INeverFinishAnythi · 03/02/2012 20:46

We are Disney Junior all the way here, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Curious George, Little Einsteins...loads of educational stuff and no adverts! Brilliant. Plus its all the right age group (DS is 3) - some programmes on CBeebies were just too old for him, which is why we moved over to Disney. Now he never watches anything else. He does also like Peppa and Thomas but we have lots of DVDs of those.

MrsHeffley · 03/02/2012 20:58

Oh mine loved Little Einsteins(I did too)Sad.
