Bathroom etiquette for visitors - use your host's shampoo but not their cream?

Picking up from another thread and a point Stella raised.

When you are visiting, what do you use?

I use their toothpaste
The nicest shampoo and conditioner
Definitely the face wash, might go half and half on my face if they have two kinds
Bubble bath and bath oils if bathing
And finally a lather of their face cream and body cream. And vary by day, depending on how many they have.

Am I the worsest house guest Grin

My sil is really rich and has all the lovely toiletries that I used to be able to buy before children sucked away all of my money. So I tend to use her shampoo and conditioner, and her posh shower gel. I then dry the bottle with my towel when I get out of the shower so she doesn't know I used it.

I always take my own stuff but would use toothpaste, shower gel and shampoo/conditioner if I ever forgot mine (not happened yet).

Am concerned however that I am putting my toothpaste on my toothbrush wrong. The way I do it involves no touching of toothbrush with toothpaset container at all, I just squeeze tube until paste makes blob on brush and then put cap on. However the majority here seem to think there is some touching of toothbrush and toothpaste container - what are they all doing to cause this???

StellaNova · 04/02/2012 23:23

bejeezus apparently not, there was a thread in AIBU I forget when, but I was retrospectively cringing for all the times I have ever used to at work etc. I can't remember why it is so rude now though. Oh yes, something to do with meaning being tired after sex when I thought it just meant very tired, with perhaps a reference to horses - "so tired I could die" type thing

I don't visit many people and don't have many visitors, getting old and antisocial.
Those visitors who do come are welcome to use anything in my bathroom they fancy, (although if they go rooting and find my vaginal cones I'd rather they left those alone!)
I usually ask "can I use your x..." when visiting if best friend/dad/ sister/brother hasn't said to use what I want first.
Why is toothpaste icky? I understand not wanting someone else to use your toothbrush but I have no emotional attachment to my toothpaste or face creams and don't get the issue with those.

iscream · 05/02/2012 08:22

2rebecca, because many people touch their toothbrush being gross with the tube of tooth paste I guess? I never thought of it, but my mom forgot hers when we were on vacation and didn't want to use mine, that was her reason. She did get cold sores though, so I think she was thinking of me when she declined to use mine.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 05/02/2012 08:25

Oh great thread... Grin

Now OP, do you mean a 'staying guest' type visitor or one who's just popped in for coffee?

iscream · 05/02/2012 08:26
Confused Repost (wish we could edit) 2rebecca, because many people touch their toothbrush with the tube of tooth paste I guess? I never thought of it as being gross, or even realized we did do that, but I do touch the toothbrush with the tube when squeezing on the tooth paste. My mom forgot hers when we were on vacation, and didn't want to use mine, and that was her reason. She did get cold sores though, so I think she was thinking of me when she declined to use mine.

Well unlike many of you, who sound like you downright despise the people who come to stay with you (and vice versa) I only have good friends and family ever come to stay. Therefore they can use whatever they like, I simply do not mind or care.

If I go to stay at other people's houses it is usually only overnight, in which case I take own toothbrush and skincare, and only use their shower gel, toothpaste and towel. What's the big deal about using other people's toothpaste???

Marquise what a patronising response. Perhaps you are lucky enough not to care about transmissible diseases but frankly, I don't want to share spit or other body fluids with all and sundry. And frankly, if you can't figure out what is wrong with sharing toothpaste I suggest you patent your method for applying it without touch the toothbrush Hmm

Of course you won't because you simply don't care.

Here, share my biscuits Biscuit

OT, but Stella, I never heard that, I wonder if that is why my mother dislikes it (I thought it was just "uncouth"). I grew up in a "rural" community, and to me knackered what happens to your old horse when you send it to the knackers yard. i.e. "i got Dobbin Knackered, he was use for nothing but glue" or "If I were a horse they'd shoot me"

Ifancyashandy · 05/02/2012 17:14

But but... It's the paste that touches the brush. The paste which you are about to user and thus it won't be touching the tube again. Or am I applying it incorrectly?! Confused.

Have to say, I'm with Marquis on this. If I have friends to stay, it's coz I like them and have no issue sharing the merest hints of any bodily fluids with them.

G1nger · 05/02/2012 17:38

Knackered = tired after sex.

I've certainly learnt something about toothpaste today. I've been doing it wrong.

SuePurblybilt · 05/02/2012 17:41

Toothpaste wouldn't fuss me. Fingers in pots of cream would

susiey · 05/02/2012 17:59

I see going to stay at someone's house as an opportunity to try different products. Especially shampoo and conditioner as my hair often does well with a change.
I know for a fact my friends that stay do the same as its a bit of a nice change!
But I guess we only have really good 'go and help yourself ' type friends to stay .
If I was staying for longer than 2 nights I might take my own stuff though.
But at my mums I always go on the train with 3 children so always use her stuff how ever long the visit.

This is of course with the exception of toothbrushes!

Lauranaomi · 23/05/2018 20:25

I read with interest the thread on bathroom etiquette but none of the comments helped me with my dilemma. I have an ensuite bathroom with a shower. The only other shower is over the bath in the bathroom. When visitors come I make the bathroom theirs entirely. Stock it fully and leave it for their exclusive use ( a twin bedroom & a single.) My dilemma is not wanting to make my ensuite available as well. To me it’s my private space. I look after guests really well and make them feel at home. Am I being unreasonable in not making my shower room available to visitors? Even to the point of refusing if asked? I’d really appreciate advice on this.

unicorn56 · 24/05/2018 01:19

In general I wouldn't use anything of anyone elses unless offered to me. If I'd forgotten anything I'd ask (but only if we were close e.g. in laws, best friend, not if staying with distance relative). I have on occasion borrowed a little bit of shampoo.

unicorn56 · 24/05/2018 01:22

I would be shocked (but would not mind, nd would be quite happy for them to do so) if someone borrowed my things, just because I don't know anyone in real life who does that (my family and friends always bring their own stuff bar towels).

unicorn56 · 24/05/2018 01:27

There are a couple of things I would not like people to use though.
My absolute no nos would be my razor, shower pouffe/spongey thing, a bath bomb/single use product, toothbrush.
Also, although if someone asked I would say yes (as I know this is me being weird), I would feel extremely uncomfortable about someone using my toothpaste. I'm not really sure why, I've just always been really funny about teeth and teeth related products to the extent that whilst I am not picky about brand (I reguarly change and like most I try), I absolutly cannot use other peoples toothpaste (it just freaks me out).
