To be completely freaking out at the thought of my first appt. with the infertility consultant tomorrow

As per thread title really. It's tomorrow and I'm getting in a hysterical panic. DH is taking the more laid back approach of 'just think of it as going to get sorted so we can get pregnant sooner rather than later'. He's been lovely but I just can't feel as laid back. I'm scared about the pelvic examination, I'm worried they'll send us away and just say we have to try for longer (its over two years already). I'm just scared of everything and have got myself in a ridiculous mess :(

Every appointment or procedure is one step nearer to getting your baby.

It's a positive thing - don't be freaked out.

There's nothing to worry about re being examined. They are so used to it - and you will be soon.

Have you had a blood test taken on day three of your cycle for your hormone levels? I think they like to have that. Are they going to do an ultrasound of your uterus (dildocam)?

raspberrytipple · 02/02/2012 22:14

Hi bearcrumble no I haven't had the day 3 or 21 tests but I wondered whether they might tell me to get that done as a next step. You are right, every appointment is one step closer, I suppose it's just the 'unknown' factor at the moment

Hi,

Try not to panic - it will be fine! They are used to dealing with worried / scared / upset women and couples all the time.

There may be something really straightforward stopping you from getting pregnant, so don't imagine the worst.

I had fertility treatment and while it was a lot less fun than the traditional method of baby making, it's worth it in the end (I have a 4-year-old daughter). All the doctors, nurses and support staff were lovely and even though they went through it thousands of times a year I felt they were genuinely delighted when the treatment worked.

There's a great website / forum called (I think) fertility friends which you might find useful.

Deep breath and promise yourself a treat for being brave afterwards (gin, chocolate, new handbag - whatever you think you deserve!)

Fingers crossed for you x

raspberrytipple · 03/02/2012 07:02

Thanks Dizzy, I'll look that site up. Today I d-day lol. Best get up and get it over with!

Just wanted to say good luck. Doing something is generally better than doing nothing!

raspberrytipple · 03/02/2012 07:10

You are right, whatever they do it's a start isn't it :)

PinkFondantFancy · 03/02/2012 07:10

I just saw this and wanted to wish you good luck. It won't be as bad as you're thinking and as the others say, it's a positive step forward towards having your baby

vixsatis · 03/02/2012 07:19

Good luck! It's worth it; and you will feel much better for getting the process started.

I second "fertility friends", it was a great support to me when I was going through it

Mishy1234 · 03/02/2012 07:26

Good luck from me too! It really is worth it and you really will feel much better about the whole thing once you start doing something about it.

PopcornBiscuit · 03/02/2012 07:51

You'll be fine :) Good luck!

mrspepperpotty · 03/02/2012 07:53

Good luck OP, hope it goes well!

raspberrytipple · 03/02/2012 09:43

Thanks all. Working til lunch time and trying not to think about it to much. Sure it will all be fine and like you all say, it's all positive steps!

OP posts:
MateyMooo · 03/02/2012 10:21

you will be fine, they are not going to judge you, they will help x

MateyMooo · 03/02/2012 10:25

the day i got inseminated with my DD (Now 8) i was on the bed, legs in the air, no knickers and ready for the procedure

the doctor said to me ' i bet this is a first for you, two men in the room, flat on your back, no knickers and your legs in the air?'

I said (laughing) ' er no, typical saturday night for me'

WHAT ON EARTH was i saying. the only man ever to see my froufrou before i stated the IVF was my dh!

All i can say is that you will be having posters made of your froufrou and projected onto the houses of parliament by the time its over.

good luck

raspberrytipple · 03/02/2012 10:58

Ahhh matey that made me chuckle! However I now have images of my froufrou being hung up in some shopping mall ala gok style for people to mull over

I was nervous too. My top tip - think of any questions that you have now and write them down - you'll be too nervous/excited to remember them all tomorrow and it's really galling to realise the day after that you have no idea:
when your next appointment is
what tests you're having next
what the tests are actually for
whatever else is really bugging you.

Grin to Matey, would have loved to see the Dr's face. :) My DH used to joke about the reality of conceiving our DD with another woman in the room not living up to the fantasy. But not to the actual nurse that did the IUI. Grin

eurochick · 03/02/2012 11:09

Good luck, raspberry. No one likes pelvic exams but they are not that bad really. I had never actually had one until I started fertility investigations (at age 35). Not sure how. It was fine.

I've found the MN conception forum to be a source of great support.

I find knowledge helps me worry less so here are the fertility investigations you can expect:

Day 3 and 21 blood tests for you (perhaps also other blood tests to check thyroid, anaemia, etc)
Semen analysis for your partner (probably twice, 3 months apart)
Pelvic exam
Internal ultrasound
HSG (fluid that shows up on xrays squirted up through your tubes to check they are open)

None of it is fun but each test should give you either reassurance that one bit of your reproductive system is functioning well or flag up a problem that allows you to work towards a solution.

eurochick · 03/02/2012 11:10

BTW, you won't have all those tests at this appointment! They will probably be scheduled stage by stage. I just wanted to give an idea of what might lie ahead.

lilbitneurotic · 03/02/2012 11:25

I could have written this post 2 years ago (in fact I think I did on Fertility Friends, couldn't agree more with the posters recommending it).

My advice would be not t expect too much from the appointment because theres a lot of "ok, next time we see you we'll do this" Next time was almost always at least 6-12 weeks away (assuming your NHS). However, that time really does move a lot quicker than you think and you may be fortunate and not have to take every step of the road.

Good luck!

raspberrytipple · 03/02/2012 11:37

Mrsmouse very good tip, it hadn't crossed my mind and I do have quite a few questions that I'm bound to forget.

So far we've only had very basic tests, DH had semen done a few months ago and all was fine. I've had thyroid etc but no hormone ones. I also had the gp wanting to have a quick look down there but he didn't really do much. I'm on the conception boards euro and they are great but I was in such a state last night I just needed some quick reassurance!

We are nhs lilbit and we were referred in November so I'm guessing it's all going to be slow but I'm hoping by the end of this year we will at least know what the problem is and working towards fixing it, I so wanted my first or a baby, just one would be fine now, in my 20s but with only 10 months til I hit 30 that's now out the window which I am coming to terms with, it's not the end of the world but I grew up thinking I'd be a young mum

OP posts:
lilbitneurotic · 03/02/2012 11:43

I was exactly the same raspberrytipple and started TTC at 24, in August I had my lovely DS (I was 28 at the time). I had to travel the fertility treatment road all the way and had IVF with ICSI but it was all worth it (and not too bad at all apart from the waiting).

I wish you the same luck. Maybe a bit quicker!

raspberrytipple · 03/02/2012 12:18

Ah so pleased you got your LO in the end! Well, home now, shower change, pub lunch then off to the hospital for 3 pm :/

Bearcrumble · 03/02/2012 12:58

Good luck rasberry. Will be thinking of you this afternoon.

constantlytired · 03/02/2012 13:13

Best of luck...I too went through this before having both my children, i have minimal levels of progesterone which meant i don't regularly ovulate. Within 4 months of visiting infertility clinic i was pregnant. Let us know how you get on. x

Rhinestone · 03/02/2012 14:28

YANBU to feel this way. It IS a horrible feeling that you have to go through this and it's not fun.

BUT - this is the way to find out what the problem is and get it sorted. DH and I had to go through this, found out what the problem was, and the treatment worked first month of trying.

Thinking of you though because I know how you feel.
