Does any sane person rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?

Having a mental discussion with dh. We have just got a dishwasher, have been renting for a long time and this is our first. He has read the manual which says to rinse the dishes before you put them in.

This sounds like complete madness to me. If you are going to rinse them you might has well wash them while you are at it making the dishwasher pointless.

Does anyone actually rinse their dishes before they go in the dishwasher.

I do sometimes Blush

MissPenteuth · 31/01/2012 20:58

I do, unless the dishwasher is going to be put on straight away. If the food dries on it doesn't always shift all of it. Maybe our dishwasher's a bit shit though HmmGrin

Ben10HasFinallyLeftTheBuilding · 31/01/2012 20:58

I do if they have lumps of rice on. Just a rinse under the tap to dislodge. I don't run the DW every day and it keeps it from smelling.

JasperJohns · 31/01/2012 20:59

NO! Just bung 'em in.

OK oven baked stuff my need a bit of help, but I view that as an interesting challenge for the dishwasher.

IneedAbetterNicknameIn2012 · 31/01/2012 20:59

My step Mum does. I don't know the reason, though, I assume so the dishwasher doesn't get all gunked up?

Firawla · 31/01/2012 20:59

yes I do, its much quicker just a rinse than a full wash so it doesnt make dishwasher pointless. otherwise you may get dirt in your dishwasher and left over food clogging it up

fifteenpercentoff · 31/01/2012 21:00

I believe we're all supposed to. However...I don't. You are right about why have a dog and bark yourself.

StillSquiffy · 31/01/2012 21:00

I do.

But I'm not sane, so I don't count.

LondonMumsie · 31/01/2012 21:01

I rinse most things and soak some things, too. Only do one load a day and the morning's porridge pot and bowls would be set like concrete if I didn't rinse and soak them before school.

I don't rinse clean things, but do get rid of lumps of food.

missorinoco · 31/01/2012 21:01

As squiffy put it.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/01/2012 21:01

Damn looks like I may have to admit defeat on this one.

I do if there's a lot of food left on them, or if there's something on that I know won't wash off. I don't make any claims to be sane though.

DrCoconut · 31/01/2012 21:02

My folks wipe theirs over with a cloth too, may as well hand wash them.Confused

Winkly · 31/01/2012 21:02

Lumps can clog up dishwashers. Smelly food (curry sauces a primary culprit) can make them very smelly if the dishwasher doesn't go on straight away. A rinse is not the same as properly washing up.

KittyFane · 31/01/2012 21:02

I just scrape food off and put things in.
MIL doesn't scrape and is on first name terms with the repair man.
DM practically washes plates in the sink before loading and doesn't actually need to put them in the dishwasher.
I think I've got it right. :o

Sparklingbrook · 31/01/2012 21:02

I do because I hate cleaning the dishwasher filter. Bleurgh.

Clawdy · 31/01/2012 21:03

I never ever do but my sister runs hers under the hot tap till they are sparkling then puts them in the dishwasher...Confused what a waste of time.Incidentally we've had our dishwasher nearly ten years,so no harm done there then.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 31/01/2012 21:03

Of course they should be rinsed!

I wouldn't rinse a mug that had just had tea in it, but I would always rinse a plate that still has ketchup or any sauce on it.

shoofly · 31/01/2012 21:04

I do because the rented house we live in has a rubbish dishwasher

NormanTheForeman · 31/01/2012 21:04

No - I scrape anything excessive off into the bin, then put the plates/bowls etc into dishwasher. Run it every evening after evening dinner usually. Very rarely have problems with stuck-on food etc......

ILoveGreggsSausageRolls · 31/01/2012 21:05

I'm lazy, I run the pre wash cycle

Birdsgottafly · 31/01/2012 21:06

I do, i put them to soak, sometimes, to, but i am not sane, so i probably don't count.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/01/2012 21:06

Iusetoomuchkitchenroll

Are you my MIL. She can get through 4 rolls in one weekend.

dottygirl1 · 31/01/2012 21:07

Never.....Scrape them into bin and then bang them in. Never had problem and my dishwasher is 10 years old.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/01/2012 21:08

Liking the ones who scrape off food and put in. That is much more my style.
