Does any sane person rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher?

Having a mental discussion with dh. We have just got a dishwasher, have been renting for a long time and this is our first. He has read the manual which says to rinse the dishes before you put them in.

This sounds like complete madness to me. If you are going to rinse them you might has well wash them while you are at it making the dishwasher pointless.

Does anyone actually rinse their dishes before they go in the dishwasher.

I do after I had to pay for a call out for an engineer because mine stopped working. It did last 7 years before it stopped. The engineer fixed it and cleaned it and said that it would work better if I got most of the food off the plate before loading in the dishwasher. If not the then you need to make sure you clean the spray arms etc on a regular basis. I'm too lazy to do that!

mosschops30 · 31/01/2012 21:11

I rinse mine, because if they dont get washed straight away it dries on and doesnt wash off so well

marriedinwhite · 31/01/2012 21:13

I give them a quick rinse if they are very mucky. Have never had to call in the repair man.

Yup I do Blush I wasn't going to admit it until I realised that I am not alone! Grin

AnnoyingOrange · 31/01/2012 21:20

I always give plates a quick swish under the tap if they are covered in leftover food bits, sauce or gravy. I don't bother with tea/coffee cups or empty glasses

sharenicely · 31/01/2012 21:24

Weetabix sticks like glue so yes I rinse when necessary .

Whatmeworry · 31/01/2012 21:26

I think scraping the crap off is a good plan, as otherwise you have to clean the filter all the time which is yuk, but I don't rinse them.

I do think older dishwashers are more robust than the modern ones.

iwouldgoouttonight · 31/01/2012 21:28

I never rinse them first.

I am still trying to convince myself that we have a dishwasher to save water (rather than just to save lazy arse me having to wash up) so rinsing first would mean using more water and making me do more work, thus rendering the dishwasher a pointless investment.

I have no idea where all the bits of food go though.

Mandy2003 · 31/01/2012 21:28

The vair posh one-and-a-half bowl sinks have a high pressure hose kind of attachment don't they? I'd always assumed that's what it was for. But I hate dishwashers anyway.

DevonLodger · 31/01/2012 21:49

DH always does but I never do.

RedHotPokers · 31/01/2012 21:51

I give them a quick rinse if they're particularly dirty.

fifteenpercentoff · 31/01/2012 22:12

Soaking! That's what I do, esp for Weetabix and the like. Sink of hot water, bung em in. Not rinsing as such, but gets rid of the crud.

MissGreatBritain · 31/01/2012 22:14

I never rinse anything - can't see the point in having a dishwasher if you have to do that. The only things that don't always clean are rice, porridge and scrambled egg so I do leave the saucepans to soak for a bit first, but never do anything else. In fact, I'm sure I read in Which? magazine that the detergents don't work as well with clean dishes.

RedBlanket · 31/01/2012 22:19

My mum does, in fact her dishes go in Almost as clean as mine come out. I scrape all the food off but dong rinse.

lubeybooby · 31/01/2012 22:20

I never have I just scrape any obvious bits like beans or rice off so they don't get stuck in the filter. Never had a prob.

Millie1 · 31/01/2012 22:31

I scrape and rinse - don't like gungy filters!

MateyMooo · 31/01/2012 22:50

i do rinse the filter but i dont rinse the plates

scarletforya · 31/01/2012 22:59

No. Never. It's totally unnecessary. You scrape anything 3 dimensional off into the bin and pop in the dishwasher. That's what it's for.

The dishwasher can take it.

Sauces and all that crap melt off. Just don't put oily oven trays in. Other than that fire away.

WhenSheWasBadSheWasHorrid · 31/01/2012 23:01

Torn between rinsing and not rinsing. I think laziness will win and I will just scrape the plates and put them in.

Thanks for the responses.

Not most plates, but definitely soup or anything with raw egg.

This because I only run it once or twice a week, soup often ends up on glasses for some reason and raw egg dries really bad.
And because I don't like rinsing the filter.

Rhinestone · 31/01/2012 23:23

No I bloody well don't, that is the job of dishwasher.

Dishwasher just needs to man up and get on with it imho.

lesley33 · 31/01/2012 23:46

No just bung them in.

FlyingTeapot · 01/02/2012 00:03

Could someone remind me how to clean the d/w arms please.

Ta

IHeartKingThistle · 01/02/2012 00:08

You do have to get the lumps of food off, and easier to rinse or scrape them off a plate than pull them out of the filter, erg. Or poke grains of rice out of the tiny holes in the spray mechanism with a needle, boak.
