PMT,
cramps,
DP being and arse,
stressing out about tax return, stuck on first page and the helpline is shut.
I WANT TO BREAK SOMETHING!

I think & I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, that you can only be self-employed for a short period of time to one person or it automatically become employment.

IMcHunt · 30/01/2012 23:20

Saggy, if you're under your taxable limit, and you have had the slightest bit of bank interest over that tax year, you may get a rebate (as any bank interest will have already incurred tax, but if you haven't used all your tax-free allowance you don't have to pay that tax). So it's worth checking. If you've got a joint account, you declare 50% of any interest as yours.
Deep breaths - it's a pain in the arse, but it's honestly not that terrifying once you get used to it.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 30/01/2012 23:21

Although I could stuff it up DPs arse, that would make ME feel better!

Bossy, I've been self-employed in the same job for about 3.5 years now, so I'm sure that's not right. I think it's quite a common thing - the helpline people seemed quite au fait with it, and you get a slightly simpler form to fill in (if filing online).

Hi TWII, sorry if I've read this incorrectly but your Old employer telling you that the tax office would automatically contact you isn't the case, they don't automatically know we are self employed, we have to tell them. Also so they can set us up to pay class 2 national insurance contributions. If I were you I'd do as a previous poster has suggested and call them, your best bet would be the newly self employed helpline.

lostboysfallin · 30/01/2012 23:27

I was feeling similar, DH an arse too.
I took a valium.
I'm not joking

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 30/01/2012 23:27

Smile Id like that in a poster!
Actually, just talking to you guys is helping. I was getting really worried that my boss was doing something dodgy with all this, and that it wasn't normal, now I know it's common, I feel better!

OP posts:
SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 30/01/2012 23:29

I dont have any valium! Sad
I have some Bob Martins Worming tablets, would they help?

OP posts:
IMcHunt · 30/01/2012 23:31

It is pretty common, yes :)
Later in the form, there are lots of profit/loss boxes. If you're self-employed, but working for someone, and only receiving a wage from them, and nothing else, you basically only need to fill in your personal details, the amount you get paid, and any bank interest. Everything else is a long succession of blank boxes.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 30/01/2012 23:32

Ok. Im going to give it another go...

OP posts:
IMcHunt · 30/01/2012 23:33

At least mine usually is...

Bossybritches22 · 30/01/2012 23:36

IMcHunt Oh thanks I knew someone would know, that helps me stop worrying then as I have several PT jobs that are turning out to be regular IYSWIM

Saggy I squeaked mine in to my accountant on Thursday, it was a NIGHTMARE getting it sorted but Oh the relief once it was done!

Blardy tax forms. Next year I shall be able to do it online!

IMcHunt · 30/01/2012 23:39

Bossy, I spent months. MONTHS! sitting around feeling smug whilst all around me my friends were going AARGH FECKING TAX RETURNS. Smugly thinking 'silly friends, why didn't they just do it when they got their notice to file in April? I did mine AAAAGES ago'.
Of course, it turned out I had done it ages ago. I'd done it in June 2010.
Cue lots of swearing...

Bossybritches22 · 30/01/2012 23:44

Grin Grin Grin

Oh I'm glad it's not just me then!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 30/01/2012 23:55

Ok. so Im the business name. Description is that i work on a self employed basis for X. Do I enter my adress and postcode or x's? and do I enter X's full addresss in the description box?

OP posts:
SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 31/01/2012 01:26

I have done it. What an absolute load of crap questions to then simply enter one figure! Confused

OP posts:
SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 31/01/2012 01:32

Thanks everyone who is now tucked up in bed. PMT and any kind of stress are a bad combination!

OP posts:
lostboysfallin · 31/01/2012 06:08

Glad its out of the way!
Hope you feel better soon

MumofAurelia · 31/01/2012 06:20

Twllbach your boss could be prosecuted for doing that...... You have to be working for a number of different businesses and be in control of yr hours.
You are also responsible for registration for tax and ni.
You need to ring HMRC today

Bossybritches22 · 31/01/2012 07:48

,,,,,,,,,,,,,and breathe Saggy lovely not to have it hanging over you isn't it?

I think we ought to have a "nag to get your return in" thread starting in about June so we have a faint chance of not being stressed this time next year! Grin

MumofA I thought it sounded a bit dodgy too, smacks of him trying to have the best of both worlds - Twll definately get some advice, I think he's wriggling out of his Mat Pay obligations. Confused

TwllBach · 31/01/2012 13:21

Congratulations Saggy do you feel less axe murdery now?

Re: my employer and mat pay, it's not such an issue now as I lost the baby, but it certainly showed me another side to him that I didn't think he had! Fortunately, though, I have just been told that I have a job interview elsewhere for less hours, slightly less pay but job security and chance of over time etc. This way, I can actually have days off and plan holidays and things!

TwllBach · 31/01/2012 13:22

Oh, forgot to say, I did register as self employed and have been paying NI, but worked it out last night and I haven't earnt over £6,500 roughly and the lower tax limit is about £7,000 isn't it?

minouminou · 31/01/2012 13:53

The people on the HMRC helpline are lovely. I have to phone them every year as I'm an idiot (self-employed idiot). They laugh at with me and it's a surprisingly pleasant experience.

Even if you get the bugger "wrong", they're there to help you. It's not an exam....they'll iron out any mistakes. If you're worried about the deadline, submit what you THINK is right and in the final box where you add additional details, explain that you haven't got much of a clue, tried to phone etc etc....

Bossybritches22 · 31/01/2012 14:21

Twll I'm so sorry to hear about the baby Sad but glad to hear you've another interview. Sounds like it will be better in the long run re the job security even if less pay at the start. Holidays are good too! Good luck!

Glad you got the figures sorted I think you're right about he lower oimit but check with the helpline. They are as minou says very helpful and are used to what we feel are daft questions.
