To think a freezer stocked with leftovers, and a £30 spend in H&M do not constitute an ' extravanagant lifestyle'

According to my 25 year old, and still living at home brother, they do.
My sister, who is 29 and lives out of home, agrees about the freezer part.

Had a nice family lunch out for step dads birthday, slightly marred by a conversation turning to my brother thinking about moving out. It ended up being turned onto me. Im a single parent ( divorced) i work part time. and rent.
According to him, the reason i am ' always skint' is because i am bad a budgeting and live an extravagant lifesyle.

The proof of this is the freezer being fully stocked. ( with left overs) The fact that the freezer is just 3 draws as part of a fridge freezer and hardly the tardis is a moot point apparently.
Also, my £30 spend at H&M this month, as they offered me 15% off and i took advantage and picked up some spring things for DD who has outgrown everything ( compensating by eating for £15 that week, and thank fuck for the stocked freezer) is also proof that i am ' always buying things'

While i was accused of this, i was sat wearing a pair of jeans that are two years old ( and currently broken and i cant afford a new pair) a top that was 18 months old and was brought in a sale for £10 and a pair of boots also two years old. My coat is 3 years old.

Ended up in tears when i got home.

I like the way this thread is turning into a "my clothes are older than yours" competition Grin

Bewilderedmum · 30/01/2012 15:00

You could always put their bodies in your freezer if they truly piss you off :o

seriously watch-out - I batchcook as well - I bet you also have a cupboard avalanche of plastic containers/old ice-cream cartons etc that cascade onto the floor, everytime you open the door!

I have a big chest freezer in my garage that the old owners left - it's brill! :o

goes away with happy shiny thoughts about freezers....

Notcontent · 30/01/2012 15:02

YANBU

I always have stuff in the freezer. Batch cooking, leftovers, and anything that I know may not get eaten right away and may get wasted if left in the fridge.

Also, I think given that you had lunch with family, and it sounds like your dd was the only child there, it would have been nice for the bill to be split bweteen the adults, rather than you having to pay for two.

starfishmummy · 30/01/2012 15:07

I think the only area in which you are bing unreasonable is to discuss your finances with other family members!

starfishmummy · 30/01/2012 15:08

that's "being". oops

watchoutforthatsnail · 30/01/2012 15:52

i havent actually discussed any details with anyone, which is also why its baffling. Noone knew i had been to H&M, in fact noone knows anything. so i have no idea where they got any of that from.

Kick your brother in the nuts.

Give him something better to think about.

My gloriously overstuffed freezer currently houses:

20 trout we bought for about £5 on Xmas Eve in Waitrose
4 pork fillets worth £24 that we paid £6 for " " " "
And loads more massively reduced meat that we bought "" """ ""

Having a freezer rammed full of bargainous foods is the very opposite of extravagence. This week we are having an organic, corn fed chicken which will feed us for 5 nights (roast, pie, pasta, rissoles & noodle soup). It was reduced from £12 to £3 (guess where !). So you can tell your DB to put that in his pipe and smoke it !

yellowraincoat · 30/01/2012 17:07

Another one who thinks your clothes aren't even slightly old. I still have stuff I bought when I was at school and I'm 29 now.

But you know, just ignore people who say shit like this, it's not a big enough deal to cry about it.

McHappyPants2012 · 30/01/2012 19:02

Yanbu sounds like you live a normal life.

CamperFan · 30/01/2012 20:15

Op, you are doing a fab job. Smile

FabbyChic · 30/01/2012 20:26

Get tough and tell them how it really is, that your freezer is full because unlike others you don't throw leftovers away you save it for a meal another day.

FUcking cheeky bastards, stand up for yourself don't let them treat you this way.

FabbyChic · 30/01/2012 20:27

Oh and do what I do, buy new clothes from eBay, i.e second hand, all my work suits which are all Next come from eBay, I've over 20 work suits and bar 3 all cost less than £10 each.

KatieScarlett2833 · 30/01/2012 20:36

I bought new jeans and a jumper last month because my fat arse just won't go into my other ones

Your clothes are well old Wink

Hmm to all the competitive vintage-ers

WilsonFrickett · 30/01/2012 23:07

I love how any thread about money eventually descends into 'I haven't bought pants since Regan was in power'. Can I also just say my DM came to my new house today and said 'OOOH DD, isn't that a well stocked freezer'. [preens]

(In all other respects she is rubbish OP, but as you have freezer love in common I won't mind if she adopts you Grin)

uruculager · 31/01/2012 07:24

I don't know if you live an extravagant lifestyle but YABU to "end up in tears" over the suggestion you do.

Chandon · 31/01/2012 07:30

OP, you have nothing to prove to anyone.

Your grown up children should really grow up and move out and fend for themselves, and see how they get on!

Then you could move to cheaper accommodation (a 1 bed), have lower electricity bills etc.

Kick them out of the nest, it is time for them to Grow Up!

Chandon · 31/01/2012 07:32

oh, wrong end of the stick, your 25 year old is your brother.

well, then just back off and back out, and see less of them

watchoutforthatsnail · 31/01/2012 07:53

I think im going to have to. bit of a argument followed last night, and i hung up on my mother.

Fucking judgemental fuckers.

And i do have clothes older than the ones i was wearing - it was just to show that i was not walking around in brand new clothes and not ' spending money on clothes every week' as my broher seems to think.
I have a t shirt, that i wear for painting that is 17 years old. so - Biscuit

YANBU at all!

I'm far more extravagant and I'm a single mum of 2 on a teachers' salary! My freezer is always full of reduced poultry and fish and I haunt ebay and charity shops BUT I buy a LOT of stuff. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean I need it!

Plus my kids may only get cheap days out and one holiday if they're lucky but they get numerous dance, drama, music, gymnastics etc lessons every week and they really add up!

Don't let your family make you feel bad, I think you're doing brilliantly.
