To think there is no chuffing way this model is anywhere near a uk size 20

this model
Was looking for dresses on asos.com and clicked into the 'curve' section only to realise they start at size 20. I was aghast at how lovely and relatively healthy sized the model looked wearing clothes thatlooked like they fit, but supposedly are size 20.
I am size 16 and 5ft9.5 and look nowhere near as slim (shoulder blade envy).
So AIBU to think that either the model ( while clearly not a size 8) is not a size 20, or the whole thing haa been photoshopped to ridiculouslness?
Or option C might I actually look as slim (relatively) as the lovely model?

foof i think my issue is not that plus sized models can start at size 12, just a size 12/14/16 advertising clothes that start at size 20. Totally misleading.

hippoCritt · 25/01/2012 14:53

oh ok I see the difference now, still very misleading and the styles don't seem to be designed to flatter size 20+

Listzilla · 25/01/2012 14:53

Do these companies think your iq reduces as your dress size increases?
Sadly I think that's a popular opinion, not limited to clothing companies.

dickiedavisthunderthighs · 25/01/2012 14:54

blackeyedsusan Models, even plus size ones don't usually have 'big floppy tummies'

tulipgrower · 25/01/2012 14:55

It says she is 178cm / 5'10", so she's way taller that the average women, which makes clothing look way better -> longer legs to start with.

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 25/01/2012 14:56

Subtle text difference on main site here

It clearly says " model wears" x size
On plus size part just tells you measurements of the size 20 garment.

Not sure why this has got my goat so much

Off on a tangent, I would guess that there are very few size 20+ women who don't need to wear a bra. So why in the name of chuffing heck try to sell them a dress with cut out panels all over the back?

FoofFighter · 25/01/2012 14:56

Not disagreeing with you at all OP!

Lumiya · 25/01/2012 14:56

Op - everyone size 20 and under looks like that. You must have some dodgy mirrors in your house of you think you look any different.

OneHandFlapping · 25/01/2012 14:57

On their non-curve designs they say "Model's height 5ft 10,model wears UK8".

On the curve designs they just give the height- which suggests they are fiddling the dress sizes.

This girl is no more than a 12 surely? Certainly, at 5ft10, not a 20.

FoofFighter · 25/01/2012 14:57

Jumping onto Tmesis' tangent, the clohtea re bloody awful! Esp the floral two piece suit Envy

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 25/01/2012 14:59

i always suspected my mirror was a cast off from the hall of mirrors

The coral tight cowl neck number would not have look out of place on a Ricki Lake show guest circa 1998

My 6ft cousin looks like a super model in size 16, at 5'6" I just look overweight. They might just look like giants if photographed next to an average sized woman.

yellowraincoat · 25/01/2012 15:04

It is awful LaineyWayIsEssex.

I've been looking at the Curve stuff recently and it actually really shocks me how little there is for woman above a 16 or even a 14. I'd never noticed before, it's really quite shit.

TalkinPeace2 · 25/01/2012 15:08

www.cockeyed.com/photos/bodies/heightweight.html

a very interesting data set that shows what UTTER bilge the press write about sizes

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 25/01/2012 15:11

the bit about needing a bra yes yes this really gets me that I find it hard to get a sexy looking big bra that gives me an option for backless wear. strapless yes but the crossover back for a low cut back or even a plastic strap no chance. oops silly me keep forgetting that bigger girls can not possibly be sexy!

NoWuckingFurries · 25/01/2012 15:11

That model is definitely not a size 20 but then again, the site isn't claiming that she is. They only put her height, not what dress size she's wearing. Most plus size models are size 12-14, which when you consider a regular model is about a size 6 then it is plus size. Totally unrepresentative and thoroughly depressing but the current state of affairs nonetheless.

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 25/01/2012 15:13

I only looked at curve in the first place in the hope there might be some dresses similar to those on the main site, but tailored to suit a fuller figure, as especially being tall and overweight, most dresses are way too short to look good on me, or for me to feel good wearing them.
And you can fuck off if you think I'll drag my arse into Evans, talk about marginalising people.
Sorry am ranting now. Would just be nice to have more choice, rather than clothes sized up that clearly will not look good on bigger bodies.
And then to be patronised by having a much smaller model try to sell you the clothes? I can't relate to real models, how fucking depressing that I can't even relate to the 'plus size' del

OP posts:
TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 25/01/2012 15:17

I realise that nofucking, but it would be bette imo if they made it clearer that the model doesn't actually fit their clothes which are at least 2 sizes bogger than she is.
A losing battle, and not that important in the grand scheme of things, but feeling a bit ranty this afternoon.

Ignore the typos.
Ipad can't cope with my plus sized fingers

lainey have you tried simply be? that's where I do most of my shopping, nice shoes too (wide)

psammyad · 25/01/2012 15:21

Given that she's 5'10" I think she could easily be a size 18, if not quite a 20.I'm about her size & build from the waist up (just 4 inches shorter which makes a lot of difference to the way it looks).

That's an interesting picture chart in the link above - I'm size 18, 5'6' & 70kg which corresponds to the woman in the purple scoop neck top which looks about right.

4 inches above that is a stunningly slim redhead with a figure like the ASOS model... she could easily be an 18.

TheLaineyWayIsEssex · 25/01/2012 15:22

No I haven't. I'll take a look, thanks step.
