she's just lovely isn't she?

just a little scriptwriting niggle: when midwife whatsername met Chummy at the door, she pronounced the Cholmondeley (sp?) part of Chummy's name properly: Chumley. Midwife whatsername was apparently brought up on the other side of the tracks, drinking out of jam jars, so wouldn't have known how to pronounce that name and would have made a very telling faux pas.

Just saying.

Dd1 and I are really enjoying it. I think I will need to get her the book for her birthday.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 24/01/2012 08:44

She would have known if she'd been told. She might have had a phone call saying to expect her.

I always saw Chummy as blonde...

ShowOfHands · 24/01/2012 08:50

She's have been expecting Chummy. Would have known her name I would imagine.

I missed the very end. Did they explain what happened to Mary? I remember from the book how her tale ended but wasn't sure if they'd included what happened to her in later years?

belgo · 24/01/2012 08:50

No there wasn't anything about what happened to her years later.

I was surprised that Jenny Lee didn't realise that the baby would have been adopted.

springydaffs · 24/01/2012 10:12

I think the suggestion is that Jenny Lee is completely naive about the ways of the/that world - hence her wide-eyed muteness for at least the first episode.

SOH what happened to Mary in the book?

SusanneLinder · 24/01/2012 10:26

SOH what happened to Mary in the book?

I wanna know too. Please tell me she didn't go back to that guy and end up a prostitute again :(

I love Chummy-I need to get the books now. I did read they are doing a second series.Fantabulous :)

ShowOfHands · 24/01/2012 10:36

It's been a while since I read it so I don't remember exactly but largely, Jenny opened a newspaper a few years later to read about a tiny baby being snatched from a pram in Manchester. They caught the person who did it a fortnight later, trying to board a boat to Ireland. The girl was tried, the defence explained the girl had lost her own baby, the baby she took was well cared for etc and she was v distressed but she was sent to prison aged 21, described as having lived a horrible and unlawful life. The photograph of the young girl in question was Mary. I think Jenny ummed and aahed about going to see her but didn't in the end. I do remember sobbing an awful lot whilst reading it (dd was a baby at the time and I just couldn't imagine what the poor girl went through).

entropygirl · 24/01/2012 10:45

didnt stop crying for an hour after the show. It should carry a warning that people with newish babies and/or PND should not watch. Couldnt cope with the lovely funny Chummy stuff interspersed with breast abscesses caused by having your baby taken off you.

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 24/01/2012 11:01

spingydaffs I understand what the actress playing Jennifer was attempting to put across, I just didn't think she did it very well, and is much more convincing since she has started talking. I personally think that the years of training she would have undergone would have made her a bit more able to hide her true feelings and get on with things. But I appreciate that I'm niggling.

spiderlight · 24/01/2012 11:03

I would love to have Chummy as a midwife. MH was fabulous.

springydaffs · 24/01/2012 12:19

bless you entropygirl (sneaking in a hug). When I had PND I could only watch children's programmes.

StealthPenguin · 24/01/2012 13:01

Oh my God, I love her.

And the first episode - JESUS

Did anyone else just cry?! I have never gone from so sad to so happy so quickly!! I was absolutely bawling my eyes out!

nickelhasababy · 24/01/2012 13:34

I sobbed while trying to explain to DH what the narrator had said about the c-section-rickets lady's baby being saved by the nhs.

and this is the only time i have loved miranda- the difference being that chummy is genuinely a wonderful people-person and that make her a fabulous nurse, and as she proved with the breech, midwife.

springydaffs · 24/01/2012 17:43

ah yes, Chummy certainly does love Jesus Wink
