she's just lovely isn't she?

regretting the ie spelling - Chummy much better

I'd like to watch it again because a lot of her lines were a bit gabbled not a trained actor and she had some great lines re wanted to be a missionary rather than a nun because there may be a chap involved - is that what she said?? also personally 'knowing' Princess Margaret. Got into a fight with a bust dart.

not that I'm criticising Chummy mind!

I don't think anyone else could have played the character of Chummy! The books are so good I was apprehensive about watching bbut have loved it so far (oh and I know who she gets together with too!!!)

LeBOF · 23/01/2012 19:17

Didn't the author of the books write specially to Miranda to ask her to play the character?

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/01/2012 19:20

My Granny uses "peely wally" to refer to tea that isn't strong enough. I've not heard it anywhere else.

LeBOF · 23/01/2012 19:22

Yes, I've found the interview:

Is it true that Jennifer Worth, whose memoirs the series is based on, handpicked you for the role?
?Yes and it was a huge honour. Jennifer had written to me with a copy of the book saying, ?I?ve been watching your sitcom and when I watch you I think of my friend Chummy.? As soon as I read Chummy?s story I wrote back to say I really hope I get to play this part ? she?s such an amazing character!?

Salmotrutta · 23/01/2012 19:22

I'm really enjoying this series too!

And yes, apparently the author (sadly died before the show aired) did write asking Miranda to do the part.

Salmotrutta · 23/01/2012 19:23

Peely wally is a very common expression up here in Scotland.

MumofAurelia · 23/01/2012 19:33

I normally hate MH, just really annoying (tbh it is probably because she is how I see myself and it is painful sympathetic embarrassment)
But call the midwife is fabulous, and MH as Chummy was exactly how i saw her when reading the books, for once a series that is true to the books. 'peely wally' is something my granny said which made me well up so what with babies being born making me cry, red bicycles and Chummy I was a complete mess last night lol!

Flisspaps · 23/01/2012 19:37

YADNBU.

She is absolutely fabulous in it Grin

From the trailer for next week, I would have thought it's the copper that she gets with.

Faverolles · 23/01/2012 19:43

The dr had a mahoosive wedding ring on, I noticed last night. That would be scandalous!

springydaffs · 23/01/2012 19:46

oh pleeeease don[t tell who she gets together with!

Me too. Loved the book and loving the programme although I blubbed a few times as well. Miranda is perfect in the role - can't imagine anyone else playing the part.

I do like something to look forward to on an otherwise dull Sunday evening.

OpinionatedMum · 23/01/2012 19:49

YANBU and she turns out to be a real hero....

OpinionatedMum · 23/01/2012 19:49

and all round good egg.

Pixel · 23/01/2012 19:50

MH was wonderful, I love Chummy! (I'd have bought her a tricycle. Smile) I enjoyed last night's episode much more than the first one. The only bit I was a bit Hmm about was when the doctor was explaining about rickets. It really jarred because neither Chummy nor the pregnant lady would have had the slightest need of his little lecture, it was so obviously aimed at us, the thick viewers.
I was so sad for the young girl who had her beautiful baby taken away. Sad

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 23/01/2012 19:55

Chummy is great, the Jennifer Worth character is getting better now, she spent the first episode just staring blankly at everyone Hmm

5Foot5 · 23/01/2012 21:07

Another Chummie fan here. Do you think they padded her up a bit? I know Miranda is a big girl lengthways but I don't think she is normally quite as hefty as dear old Chummie. I hope "some chap" did come along for her in real life.

nowwearefour · 23/01/2012 21:11

i love love love her too!

Oh yes, totally adore Chummy! Love MH anyway but Chummy is just fantastic Grin

HolofernesesHead · 23/01/2012 21:34

Yes, she was lovely. I loved the bit when she comes to the kitchen table and says that she's been to the off-licence to get some whiskey for the policeman (whom I think she will get together with!) then 'I asked for the Glenlivet, but he hadn't heard of it' or something, and looks vaguely puzzled. Great little vignette of her struggling to adjust! Grin

gremlindolphin · 23/01/2012 22:41

Yes we love Chummy here too! I thought she was a great, if a little miranda-like character.

TartyMcFarty · 23/01/2012 22:47

I loved the 'arse first' moment!
