I am talking about packed lunches. Both my children have a sandwich and whatever else they are taking all in one box. I don't wrap things separately. If I put a banana or a yogurt or anything in a packet into their lunchbox I wash it first. To do otherwise is surely revolting in the extreme? Have you seen the state of the yogurt shelves in the supermarket? So why would I nestle a pot straight from that shelf into the lovely soft sandwich I have just lovingly made for my child? And you wouldn't put an unwashed apple into the lunchbox, so why would you put an unwashed banana? I know they don't eat the skin, but we're talking about a skin that has been processed and sprayed and handled and groped and sneezed on how many times before you snuggle it into your childs lunch?

I am not mad.

Please inform my dh that I am right and not mad and he is wrong and revolting.

Just put the sandwich in a bag or a sandwich wrap?

Pagwatch · 22/01/2012 08:43

You are a bit mad.
Why don't you wrap the sandwich, doesn't it shift and break up if it is lose in a lunch box ?

EirikurNoromaour · 22/01/2012 08:43

Don't you wrap their sandwiches in something? No I'm afraid YABU.

Rindercella · 22/01/2012 08:45

Mr Silentboob, you are right and your wife is barking wrong. Grin

Sorry if that's not what you want to hear SB, but my God, it would never have occurred to me to wash bananas and yoghurt pots and now you have brought it to my attention, I still wouldn't. I am a strong believer of it being a good thing to expose children to a few germs.

I am just so pleased to know that I will never have to do a school packed lunch again.

shouldabeenwashedinajug · 22/01/2012 08:45

Weird not to wrap up the sandwich.

YABU.

iscream · 22/01/2012 08:45

You are right. Although I'd wrap the sandwich /box anyways, I don't think it is as fresh otherwise. But whatever. :)
You can buy a banana case so it doesn't bruise.

Rindercella · 22/01/2012 08:45

Oh, and I always used to wrap the sandwiches anyway.

iscream · 22/01/2012 08:46

*wrap/box the sandwich anyways

odd not to put the sandwich in a bag.

Tee2072 · 22/01/2012 08:46

Really? People wash bananas and yoghurt pots?

The things you learn on MN.

WipsGlitter · 22/01/2012 08:46

You are mad. Nor would I wash the apple. a few germs at ok. Do you never eat out?

TroublesomeEx · 22/01/2012 08:47

YABU.

If the sandwiches are wrapped what is the need?

Being exposed to small amounts of bacteria and general germiness is what builds a child's immune system.

WTAF · 22/01/2012 08:49

I'm more concerned that you are nestling and snuggling the items in, tbh! Think DH could be right about the madness Wink

YABU.

LoveHandles88 · 22/01/2012 08:49

Most things from the supermarket have had grubby fingers all over them. It starts with the lorries, then the warehouse staff, then the shelf stackers, and then hundreds of customers, including the ones that use the shop toilets and do not wash their hands (seen it many times).
I always take things from the back of shelves so that they have had few/none of the grubby fingers of the customers on them. As for fruit and veg, I do try and get mine from the market, and to be honest, the guys that work there are pretty grubby, but then half the stuff I buy was grown in mud or something worse anyways Grin

marriedinwhite · 22/01/2012 08:49

On that basis, shouldn't you wash all the shopping before you put it into your cupboards or fridge? Confused

I do wash apples, pears, plums, peaches, grapes, etc., before they go in the fruit bowl because I don't trust the dc to wash it before they eat it and dh get his knickers in a twist over unwashed fruit. I don't wash anything that has to be peeled though like bananas and oranges.

I think you are probably being a bit over the top tbh. Wrap the sandwiches.

This really isn't something to waste your time fretting over.

SilentBoob · 22/01/2012 08:49

I don't wrap the sandwiches partly because I try not to use packaging when unnecessary, and partly because my children are young and it's just an extra thing for them to have to open. Quicker and easier to open their box and there is their whole snack.

The sandwiches don't come apart, and don't go stale.

So, as I suspected you are all wrong and slatternous heathens and I am rightity right right. Grin

I think you are slightly mad even if your theory is sound. How does one actually wash a banana without damaging it, you'll be bleaching your bananas next.

And as many other posters have said, just wrap the sandwiches.

FlossieFromCrapstonVillas · 22/01/2012 08:52

How bizarre not to wrap the sandwich in a bag. All that yog n banana washing faff, you're crazy!

marriedinwhite · 22/01/2012 08:52

In that case you need to get lunchboxes with different sections - we used these for years. Came from Robert Dyas

TroublesomeEx · 22/01/2012 08:54

How old are your children?

My DD has had a packed lunch at school since she started 3 weeks after her 4th birthday. So about as young as you can get for a packed lunch!! And she managed just fine.

Get some of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=sistema+lunch+box&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1280&bih=709&tbm=isch&tbnid=11PEQewni_F1xM:&imgrefurl=thelunchboxstore.co.uk/sistema-sandwich-box-lunchbox-blue-green-pink&docid=3PXs4SqAfzNkpM&imgurl=thelunchboxstore.co.uk/image/cache/data/Sistema/Sandwich%252520Boxes-500x500.jpg&w=500&h=500&ei=js4bT5r8PNTY8QPkorWoCw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=464&vpy=354&dur=1673&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=146&ty=156&sig=104850619218317679773&page=2&tbnh=158&tbnw=158&start=15&ndsp=23&ved=1t:429,r:19,s:15" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> these

Then problem solved!!

troisgarcons · 22/01/2012 08:54

wonders how difficult it is to open a sandwich bag

SilentBoob · 22/01/2012 08:55

I recently bought a Lakeland sectioned lunchbox (shiver of excitement from tupperware thrill) but unfortunately it doesn't have Buzz Lightyear on it so has not been met with approval from 3yo.

I'm in the 'You are a bit mad' camp. Grin

It would never occur to me to wash a banana or a yoghurt. I would put the sandwich in a sandwich bag - but so that it wouldn't fall apart or leak hoummus all over the rest of the lunch, not really to protect it from germs.

Wiping a banana /yoghurt with a dishcloth would possibly introduce even more germs imo.

SilentBoob · 22/01/2012 08:56

No, I don't need to buy sandwich bags because I have a brilliant banana and yogurt washing system. Are you not paying attention?
