I am talking about packed lunches. Both my children have a sandwich and whatever else they are taking all in one box. I don't wrap things separately. If I put a banana or a yogurt or anything in a packet into their lunchbox I wash it first. To do otherwise is surely revolting in the extreme? Have you seen the state of the yogurt shelves in the supermarket? So why would I nestle a pot straight from that shelf into the lovely soft sandwich I have just lovingly made for my child? And you wouldn't put an unwashed apple into the lunchbox, so why would you put an unwashed banana? I know they don't eat the skin, but we're talking about a skin that has been processed and sprayed and handled and groped and sneezed on how many times before you snuggle it into your childs lunch?

I am not mad.

Please inform my dh that I am right and not mad and he is wrong and revolting.

I dont wash anything that goes into DD's lunch box. She will have a sandwich (which I wrap in foil or put in a tub) or she'll have pasta and salad. She'll have a piece of cheese, a yoghurt, and fruit, and maybe a chocolate coin. I wouldn't wash an apple, or a banana, wouldn't even cross my mind to wash a yoghurt pot.
What's the point of washing them? By the time DD has gotten to school, she'll have had her hands all over the place, over dirty computer keyboards, holding hands with the other children, pens used by the other kids who have likely picked their noses, and even if the school makes the kids wash their hands before lunch, young children are not (ime) very thorough with hand washing. So, your lovely washed fruit is probably cleaner than the hands picking them up.
And no, she's never had worms.

BertieBotts · 22/01/2012 14:55

You can also get worms from other children who have worms, so it's a risk that's there anyway.

Rindercella · 22/01/2012 15:02

If your DH and 100 MNers say you're wrong, the likelihood is that you are indeed wrong. But you are very funny, which almost makes up for it.

Lueji · 22/01/2012 15:06

When exactly do you wash eggs, OP?

I hope not when you put them in the fridge, because washing makes the shell less waterproof and you may end up contaminating the inside of the egg, which is what you don't want.

TheGrandOldDuke · 22/01/2012 15:09

You are probably a bit OCD. I've had counselling to deal with the fact that I have to wash my hands after touching bananas. Apparently that's not normal...

Oh dear. I let my 7 month old play with the yogurt pot at supper last night - and - he put in his mouth and sucked on it too...

I definitely hadn't washed it.

You are definitely bonkers, but I think you are very funny and will let you off.

Surely everyone washes the outside of a melon?

GirlWithPointyShoes · 22/01/2012 15:39

Who knew the simple packed lunch could be so complex! It seems we all have our own way of doing it.

I personally reuse little resealable packets which would be much to small to kill a turtle when they eventually do get chucked out.

scottishmummy · 22/01/2012 15:42

Wash a melon.why the hell would I faff abbot doing that
Grapes yes
Thick skin on it eg oranges, melon, banana - no don't wash

inmysparetime · 22/01/2012 15:47

You could grow your own fruit if you're so worried about people touching it.
Insects might touch it though...
I'm still getting my head around the fact the OP lets her DCs share biscuits with the dog, but worries that packaging may have been touched by someone.
OP, you need helpGrin

inmysparetime · 22/01/2012 15:47

I don't wash any fruit, but as it's all home grown I don't worry about it either.

I hope you are as stringent about washing his lunchbox daily too?

You are insane and def BU. even moreso because you let your 3 yr old share a biscuit with your dog that is foul.

Sandwiches must be wrapped or boxed.

jamdonut · 22/01/2012 16:29

Never wash fruit if it's from the supermarket. Blackberries and raspberries from the garden - yes -. But yoghurt pots?????

crazycanuck · 22/01/2012 16:29

Op, you are completely and utterly barking! Grin if you are worried about packaging waste you need a wrap - n- mat. I have 2 for ds's lunch, they are brilliant.

Oh, and chickens don't have vaginas. They have cloacas.

Smile
ValarMorghulis · 22/01/2012 16:30

have another child OP. You will have far less time on your hands and so will chose nto to waste it on such absurdities.

TwoStepsBack · 22/01/2012 16:37

You are a bit bonkers but very funny.Grin

Surely though, we wouldn't be having this argument if supermarket checkouts had a kind of "car wash" contraption attached to the conveyor belt. All food can have a good wash & dry on the way to your shopping bag for life.

SilentBoob · 22/01/2012 16:40

Another child Shock ??! I am 8 months pregnant with my 3rd Grin Gizza chance.

Oh god don't get me started on supermarket conveyor belts. What is the wet? What IS IT?? It's melted chicken ice isn't it?

I did wonder whether or not chickens have vaginas. Thank you for clarifying.

SilentBoob · 22/01/2012 16:41

See jamdonut I wouldn't bother washing fruit from the garden. The children gorge themselves on blackberries from the hedges (but not from near the road in case of dog wee or car fumes, obviously). Unless there's obvious signs of bird poo.

funkybuddah · 22/01/2012 16:48

I think you are a little odd, but then I dont wash any fruit. Its a wonder the kids have survived thusfar!! Wink

AmberLeaf · 22/01/2012 16:51

Make sure they check the blackberries before eating them.........you will regularly find a maggot where the stalky bit comes off.

Oh well extra protein

scottishmummy · 22/01/2012 16:52

Boob you do have heigtened anxieties about an array of situations
Why do you disproportionately fear germs etc so much

SilentBoob · 22/01/2012 16:52
