AIBU to not let my DS play Call of Duty at a friends house?

He's 6. He thinks I'm a lousy mum and can't understand why others of a similar age are allowed to play it. AIBU?

Sounds a bit young to be playing it. What is the age rating on the game?

CiderwithBuda · 21/01/2012 14:54

6? YANBU.

Having said that my nephew got it at 6!

I have relented a bit with my DS but he is 10. I let him play it at friends' houses as it's not that often but won't let him have it at home.

BackforGood · 21/01/2012 14:54

I assumed you were taling about 16 yr old.
I'm Hmm that you are even asking other people's opinion about a 6 yr old playing on an 18 rated game.

MmeLindor. · 21/01/2012 14:56

Six is FAR too young for COD. I would not even let a 13 or 14yo play it.

RockyAddict · 21/01/2012 14:56

PEGI is either 16 or 18. I've never seen it but just the rating (for me) implies it's unsuitable for a 6 year old. But maybe I ABU.

Though my DS (12 yo) says there are 15 versions.

He sometimes wheedles about CoD because all his friends play it ! They don't.

My answer to him is "Over my rotting corpse".

GypsyMoth · 21/01/2012 14:57

He's too young

But if he is at someone else's house, how would you stop it?

KnockDiddyKnockKnock · 21/01/2012 14:58

YANBU. DP isn't allowed to play it when DS (10 yo) is about so there's no way I would let a 6 year old play it.

I would be extremely cross if another parent let him play it at their house.

RockyAddict · 21/01/2012 14:58

backforgood Well the fact that DSs friend is 7 and plays it with his parents' blessing is why I ask. They are lovely people.

It's all shooting, killing and swearing

Also, is it 'live' gameplay?

c0rnsilllk · 21/01/2012 15:00

of course you know already that YANBU

RockyAddict · 21/01/2012 15:00

ok am reassured that I am not a lousy mum. Thanks. The ban with stay in force.

I asked my DH as he knows what this is, he says absolutely YANBU, 6 is far too young :)

feralgirl · 21/01/2012 15:07

I get annoyed with DH playing it and he is 36. It's horrible. He and I are going to have some huge arguments about gaming once DS is a bit older (he's 3).

YADNBU.

inchoccyheaven · 21/01/2012 15:07

I would just tell the other parent you don't want him playing it and if their child wants to play it when yours is there then please can they let you know and you will collect him.

I have done this with my dc who are 9 and 11 and I don't want them playing games that are rated about a 12 so I just let the parents know.

GypsyMoth · 21/01/2012 15:10

If you say he can't play it then he might just sit and watch, equally as bad

MmeLindor. · 21/01/2012 15:15

I am with InChoccyHeaven.

We haven't had it with games yet (aside from at my brother's and he knows me too well to even suggest it) but have made it clear to friend's parents that my DC are not allowed to watch DVDs above PG.

TidyDancer · 21/01/2012 15:19

No bloody way is this suitable for a child of that age! Well done for sticking to your guns OP! I may consider allowing a mature 15-year-old to play this, but absolutely no younger than that.

And I'm sorry, but I would judge a parent that would allow a younger child to play this. It's a bad choice.

mrsjay · 21/01/2012 15:25

no never i hate COD but its because my husband played it all last week while he was on holiday so im a bit twitchy about it Grin, however its not for a 6 year old , i dont care if people say its only a game blah blah , these games are certificated for a reason ,

LordOfTheFlies · 21/01/2012 15:29

YY mrsjay the certificate should be the key clue.

Just like I wouldn't let my DS watch The Human Centipede and it's by no way the worst film I've seen. ( Well the worst acting certainly ) Hmm

mrsjay · 21/01/2012 15:33

MY dd watched human centipede when she was 16/17 it was going round online i watched it for half n hour and felt really ill about the whole thing , you can come and go with certificates when they are teens (just) but not with little children they are like little sponges and take it al in but cant process it , and to be really boring its against the law

Lara2 · 21/01/2012 16:10

My almost 15 yo gets pissed off because I won't let him play 18 rated games or watch 18 rated films. He gets the same answer everytime "They have a rating system for a reason." But it's just tough luck - he has Asperger's, doesn't really have friends Sad so the playing/watching at someone else's house doesn't really arise. It's his brother's games he wants to play.

I teach YR and I'm constantly horrified by what 4/5 yo play/watch. All I can say to them is "You shouldn't be watching/playing that sweetheart, it's for adults/older kids."

Lara2 · 21/01/2012 16:11

Sorry - forgot to say YANBU!

Feminine · 21/01/2012 16:14

6 Shock

no way YANBU ...not one tiny bit.

ragged · 21/01/2012 16:18

I would let it go (at friends' house, occasionally) thru gritted teeth at age 10+. But age 6, NO.
