Translation and proofreading.

Boomerwang · 20/01/2012 05:01

I would love a job doing some proofreading but when I looked into it you had to have 9238742934 years of experience and references etc.

How do you get to start from scratch? All I do is sit around all day waiting for the baby to be born because it's 6 miles to the nearest bus stop and a good 15 miles to the nearest town and I don't speak Swedish. I could be bringing in some money so we can move.

I started by setting up a website, printing some cheap business cards and sending them around everywhere I could think of. Big companies, the council, the police, universities, the paper etc. i did a few jobs for free to build a little portfolio and some reduced rate to build a name and now I usually earn around £300 a month doing about ten hours work.

Honu · 20/01/2012 06:51

Maths tutor.
Started by putting small ads in local parish magazines (spend about £50 a year). Still do this but now about 50% is by personal recommendation.

I moderate a website (not this one, obviously), for an hour a day, five days a week. I have also done a bit of copy editing and proofreading. I was a commissioning editor in-house, before DS arrived and I became a SAHM.

Occasional translation (though the language I translate from is a bit rusty).

There seems to be something of a pattern emerging here with all these translators and proofreaders.

Marketing. And you'll get a higher proportion here than you meet in RL because we are the ones without bosses peering over our shoulder to see what we are doing! Also working from home can be quite lonely, and online interaction is the only thing that keeps me (moderately) sane.

Wibble.
