I probably am BU because I could definitely do with saving some cash on my grocery shop. But I've had some v bad tesco value items in the past (soft rice crispies, plasticky tasting chocolate etc).

I was looking at value chicken breasts today, thinking 'they're probably going to taste the same as the other slightly more expensive ones once it's in a stew anyway'. but for some reason bought the more expensive ones anyway.

Value ready salted crisps taste the same as branded ones. Just FYI

Well some value items are better than others. It depends on what the thing is and basically how much can be done to it to make it cheaper. I wouldn't buy value chicken myself, or value sausages, but value butter is OK and Sainsbos Basics LongGrain Rice makes smashing risotto.

JjandtheBean · 20/01/2012 00:02

Go to aldi, cheaper prices better quality, I can't face tesco value meats so yadnbu.

somedayma · 20/01/2012 00:04

yeh value sausages freak me out cos they have a ridiculously low percentage of meat in them.

I've never been to aldi as there isn't one near me. I wonder if lidl does decent value things? There's one right near my house. Hm.

Tesco value pure orange juice is just as good as the branded stuff

value fruit and veg fine -just not as pretty

value chicken ok but needs checking for bits of bone lol

value butter ok but not marg

value beans are fine to go in chili but not on toast

value ice lollies are fine for the kids but I shall stick to the mini magnums

Tranquilidade · 20/01/2012 00:06

Never buy Sainsbury's Value teabags. Someone on here said they were nice so I bought some and they taste like wet dishcloth

somedayma · 20/01/2012 00:06

I appreciate these tips! Value beans are hideous. I'm v fussy about beans. Although good point about putting them in something rather than eating them alone, you won't taste the diff then.

somedayma · 20/01/2012 00:07

I would never give up my tetley teabags. NEVER

Tesco Smart Price beans are made by, to the same recipe, and are indeed from the same production line as Cross and Blackwell. "Value" brands are made by the mainstream manufacturers for supermarkets, who pay a premium to get 'loss leaders'.

Only fools dont shop wisely.

cece · 20/01/2012 00:12

I always buy Value dishwash tablets. Plates are still clean. Hmm

WorraLiberty · 20/01/2012 00:12

Lots of value things are just fine

Tesco crisps are lovely but not the value crisps

Any time I've bought them they've been burnt/green in parts and almost transparent with grease.

somedayma · 20/01/2012 00:12

C&B beans are also tasteless so I'm not surprised!

I like the value lemon curd a lot. 22p a jar. Not to be sniffed at. Also it is so cheap it is dairy free so perfect my DC3. Smile

somedayma · 20/01/2012 00:14

I use value dishwasher tablets too, they do the same job. Although my mum says otherwise. I'm sure my plates are as clean as hers!

sainsburys basics pickle for sandwiches is really cheap and just as good as branston. Ditto their cereal bars. Their ham is ok but obv not as good as the 4 quid fancy stuff

Waitrose value products and Sainsbury's are good.

ApocalypseCheeseToastie · 20/01/2012 00:17

Morrisons value peanut butter is the mutts nutts

JugglingWithSnowballs · 20/01/2012 00:22

Oohh, < jumps up and down >

< waves vigorously >

Definitely go and have a look around LIDL. One near you and you've never been ? I love a nice, new, & slightly quirky continental supermarket.

Enjoy ! Report back tomorrow Grin

somedayma · 20/01/2012 00:26

i definitely will :D

SlinkingOutsideInFrocks · 20/01/2012 00:32

It depends on the brand. I'm no longer in the UK but found Waitrose Essentials great for the most part, and didn't like the Sainsbos Basics Range at all, though others swear by it.

I am yet to encounter a good value-range tonic water. Nothing is as good as Schweppes. I will drink any old moonshine gin, but the tonic must be Schweppes.

spingey · 20/01/2012 00:32

tesco value beans are fine, you just have to cook them on the hob for ages untill they have reduced down.

its a bit hit or miss, tesco value co co pops are not nice but the own brand ones are fine. tesco value choc spread fine.

AgnesBligg · 20/01/2012 00:34

I bought the basics teabags too on MN advice (oh dear and repeated the advice I think soz) and they are utter dishwater. Yorkshire tea here.

I do like lots of Sainsbos basics though, and there are threads recommending best buys.

ComposHat · 20/01/2012 00:45

Get ye to an Aldi.

Aldi Alcafe Ground coffee: brilliant stuff
ALdi's washing powder is pretty good too.
Deli COunter and Real ales are worth a look too.

squeakytoy · 20/01/2012 00:53

value tinned tomatoes are fine

sainsbury own brand dishwasher tablets are as good as any of the expensive ones

sainsburys red label tea bags are just as good as tetley or pg tips

lauraloveskitsch · 20/01/2012 00:53

I like ASDA value and their value meat is not too bad. IMO worth the extra £2 for better beef mince.

Aniseeda · 20/01/2012 00:58

Value flour is great Grin
