To want/need glasses in an hour>

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 22:29

Furstly, sorry for duplicating my thread I am just feeling a tad hysterical and really need advice.
I've broken my glasses - frame is broken, lens won't sit in. Have tried to superglue lens back in but I can't even describe the shitness that resulted from that. Strings of superglue everywhere, including over the lens. I cannot leave the house without my glasses - cannot drive and wouldn;t dare walk.
I've sorted it with work so I don;t need to be there tomorrow. But I desperately need to find somewhere where they do one hour glasses. Mine are ruined and only good as a desperate measure to help me get to an opticians. Does anyone happen to know if Vision Express in Northampton do a pair ina an hour? Or anywhere else?

I know it's my fault for not having a spare pair....

poor you! i would imagine most opticians would have something for emergencies surely

GirlWithPointyShoes · 19/01/2012 22:33

I'm searching online for you now. What a nightmare can I ask where you are?

GirlWithPointyShoes · 19/01/2012 22:36

Sorry just read you OP properly!

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 22:37

Oh thanks so much you two. I'm South Northants - Ive never said this before in my life but.....money no object. I don;t care if it's somewhere expensive like Vision Express, I just need a new pair tomorrow. Trying to scrub the glue off my lens with a naiul varnish remover pad..... it's the third "bad thing" this week - hopefully last.

I thought that all Vision Express stores provide the hourly service. Actually I've just checked on line and it says that this store does provide the one hour service - 29/31 Grosvenor Centre Northampton NN1 2EL Tel.: 01604 601 .

Not sure if they'll be able to clean the lenses and remove the glue but if so, you'll simply need a replacement frame which shouldn't take long at all.

I know how you feel, I've done the same thing myself. It's upsetting and leaves you feeling very panicky.

Hope you get them sorted out.

SquashedSquirrel · 19/01/2012 22:40

DO NOT scrub the lenses, just leave them. You'll simply make them worse. If the glue can be removed then they'll be fine but if you scrub at them you'll scratch them.

GirlWithPointyShoes · 19/01/2012 22:42

Vision Express
29/31 Grosvenor Centre
Northampton, Northamptonshire
NN1 2EL
Tel: 01604 601 366

They have a one hour glasses service. Checking other places.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 22:42

Thanks Squirrel - I saw they offered that service for "some" people but recommend the 7 days service for others. I get mine 5 years ago from VE and defo only waited an hour....but did pay £300 for the privilege....
I notice on their site they offer credit. If I can access that AND get one hour specs I will weep with joy.

Thanks Girl with Point Shoes - I will be setting off for the Grosvenor Centre first thing. I HATE driving to Northampton but I think this is once of those occasion where I'm just glad I CAN.
Really hope they can see me. Probs best going and trying to get seen, rather than waiting till half eight and ringing....xx

www.sheinman.com/about-sheinman-opticians.asp

Maybe? They say,

*We manufacture on the premises and can offer a fast prescription service and respond instantly in emergencies. Having our own laboratory (established in 1922) ensures that we can achieve a completely accurate result. Wherever possible, we use NIKON spectacle lenses, considered the finest ophthalmic prescription lenses available.

Sheinman is also a specialist Contact Lens Centre. We have established large banks of soft and gas-permeable lenses and in most cases we can fit and supply the lenses on the same day. Disposable, frequent replacement and mail order contact lenses are available.*

GirlWithPointyShoes · 19/01/2012 22:49

Also Northampton I'm afraid. It's best to ring both places before heading there. Is there anyone who can help you get there?

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 22:54

Ah! Thanks for that- Ive defo heard of Sheinman and looking at their address I know where they are. I have an inkling a pair of glasses from there may make a massive dent on my finances, but I just need this sorting.
Thank you so much for taking the trouble to find this for me. I will let you know the outcome.

Had a horrid argument with my mum who suggested (or rather ordered, just her way, but it drives me mad) that I get a crappy cheap pair until I've saved up for good ones. I DO see her point, but I cannot bear the thought of ugly glasses - they're right on my face, they're what people see first. I never buy expensive clothes or shoes, but glasses is something I will happily (or grudgingly) pay top dollar for.

Fingers crossed that
a) Vision Express can See me tomorrow
b) They will do my specs in an hour
c) I can get on their credit scheme
d) If a, b and c go to pot I can get something from Sheinmans...

you will be okay!

please keep us informed though gin!

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 22:58

Well, with specs in current state I think I can drive there but obviously look like a total idiot - lens coated in glue/finger prints. (Sounds like something out of some hideous farce, I know.)
I would rather turn up early and see what they can do. If I ring ahead at 8:30 it will take me 50 mins to get there.... I'm not sure what's best. Have nobody who I can ask - everyone will be at work. My mum works flexibly as self employed but NO WAY. It will be ok. I'm lucky neither of the lenses has actually shattered. So glad you both seem to realise why this has upset me so much :-(

OP posts:
GirlWithPointyShoes · 19/01/2012 22:59

As a fellow specky I wish you luck! :o I would hate for this to happen to me and am now planning on buying an emergency pair just incase.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 23:00

Cheers southeastastra - I will do. I promise also that if everything turns out ok I will post a pic of my new specs :-D Fingers crossed

OP posts:
GirlWithPointyShoes · 19/01/2012 23:02

Aw don't worry! Would you be OK with contact lenses if things go bad? I think they are easier to get in an emergency.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 23:19

Hey, hadnt considered that. I used to wear one day contacts very occasionally. A few pairs of those would be a VERY happy compromise if needed. (They did itch like fuck though and once I came in drunk and tried for about 20 mins to get them out before realising I wasn't wearing contacts....!!!)

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 19/01/2012 23:25

what is your prescription? that will depend on the specs in an hour thing.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 19/01/2012 23:37

I'm -5 in one eye, the better one I think.... not sure about the other...
I defo had the lenses thinned in an hour last time...but that was a Vision Express in a city...

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 19/01/2012 23:44

no cyl or axis? no astigmatism?

should be fairly easy. and most opticians would give you a free 5 days or so of contact lenses to see you through.

phone around all the opticians in the morning. i used to work at an independent who could have done that rx in an hour. then i worked for a specsavers, be careful...some big chains are only interested in the £££ - go for somewhere that will advise you on frame choice for the best result for your lenses. if its been more than a year see if you can get a test so you are paying for an up to date rx.

be careful with your frame choice- nothing tooooo square or your lenses will be thick at the outer edges (even if they are thinned) and make sure your frame fits you!! V important! people panic buy the worst fitting frames when in dire need!

stay calm, phone around, your rx isnt complex and many many opticians should be able to do this quickly and give you some CL in the meantime.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 20/01/2012 00:04

Thank you vicar! I don;t think I have any more complex needs than my crap-sightendness...you have given me hope! Going to set off tomorrow early and get this sorted. It;s pretty swful actually - because of the the dire incident with the superglue, glasses do not look good at all. Crooked. Smudged. I just want to get in there as early as poss.

OP posts:
ThatVikRinA22 · 20/01/2012 00:08

phone around.

for the specs to be ready in an hour the opticians will have to have an on site lab.

ButWhyIsTheGinGone · 20/01/2012 17:42

Just a quick update for you lovely people.
Drove to N'ton Vision Express really early this morning and they saw me an hour later. As I was being measured for the new frames the Optician chap looked at my broken specs and they literally fell apart in his hands! It was quite embarrassing, he looked quite obviously bemused that I had let it get this bad!
However, I am the proud owner of some new specs with another pair on the way! I am a lot skinter....but hey!
Thanks all for your advice during my panic!
