I mean, we are part time...clue is in the name. And we get paid less.

Lots of moaning that full timers get work as part timers cant do it in our place.

Eh? Your post doesn't really make sense.
If you work part time, you work less, therefore you get paid less. Don't see the problem myself. Do people really moan about it? Surely they try to increase their hours if it's a problem

Its rife in our place.......someone cant take something on as it occurs on a day they dont work, full timer is allocated the work and kicks off.

callmemrs · 19/01/2012 17:20

Erm... I usually wish the part timers in my office a good rest of week when they finish... It's called being friendly. Very odd to assume its jealousy. If I wanted to work less then id find a part time job

noblegiraffe · 19/01/2012 17:21

Just say 'it's brilliant, I highly recommend going part time' and they will sigh and say they can't afford it.

Then you can give them a pitying look.

They'll soon stop moaning to you.

callmemrs · 19/01/2012 17:23

Ah right then that's a slightly different issue laptop. I would be pissed off quite rightly if I was allocated someone else's work to do. If there are part timers who aren't actually able to meet deadlines and the work is being dumped on their colleagues then that's very poor organisation.

laptopdancer · 19/01/2012 17:24

Its not someone elses work, its just general work that doesnt "belong" to anyone.

scuzy · 19/01/2012 17:24

i can see full timers point if they are getting extra work because the man power isnt there due to part time staff being employed but thats not your problem. so i would flounce out and say "see ye next week byeeeee".

if they have a problem with work tell them take it up with management.

carrotsandcelery · 19/01/2012 17:26

My experience of working part time was that you did more than your hours really required of you. It must vary from place to place though.

Bonsoir · 19/01/2012 17:26

I think the point the OP is making is that it is easier for PT workers to not take on their fair share of extra work than it is for FT workers. And I have some sympathy with that!

laptopdancer · 19/01/2012 17:28

carrots , you are right, we definitely do extra to what we have part time anyway....its just more apparent when full timers are given additional stuff as they are the only ones covering every day.

There was a part timer in my old job who was older than me and really picked on me. She demanded I cancel a holiday so she could do something with her kids and when I said no (had booked weekend away) she made my life miserable.

She (I know this is not typical of part timers btw. There were others who I got on with just fine ) used to
Come in and chat
For half a day and you could preempt that once she left she would be 'oh I didn't have time to do this' and hand
You a stack of work at 3pm. She had a productivity of 32% one day but managers wouldn't do anything.

I left that job because of her and absolutely inept management.

carrotsandcelery · 19/01/2012 17:33

It must be very difficult to manage. My boss would allocate everyone at the meeting a job. I worked 2 days and was paid for 2 days but I would get a job, same as the person who sat next to me, who worked 5 days and was paid for 5 days. I was very young at the time so put up with it for a while but did eventually point it out. To be fair, my boss was Blush and realised she hadn't thought it through. It caused an uproar though when the part timers were given fewer jobs. The full timers viewed it as them doing our jobs for us. They just couldn't see that on 2 days I should have 2/5 of the jobs that they had. It was very awkward.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 17:34

I've already told my colleagues how brilliant part time is... But at the same time I get 60% of my previous salary. They do say 'enjoy your day off' but I do consider time with my DS as fun and as a day off. I love it! I'm not sure I ever want to work full time again! Grin

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 19/01/2012 17:35

Incidentally though I'm highly productive when I'm there and they definitely get their moneys worth out of me. Smile. I think it's win win!

KittyFane · 19/01/2012 17:39

I have worked P/T and F/T in the same job.

When P/T I don't have to pick up any extra stuff, I'm not asked to or expected to, F/T I'm asked to do all sorts of things over and above my normal workload making my standard job hard work.

As a P/T employee, I've responded with the standard "I get paid a lot less, lose x% of the basic wage because I'm P/T" and as a F/T employee I resent P/T staff getting off lightly when extra jobs are dished out.

I can see both sides.

callmemrs · 19/01/2012 17:42

Part time work = part time Salary and part time pension though kitty. When you think about the long term, there are a lot of disadvantages . ( I know a lot of women choose to do part time temporarily when their babies are very small though)

I already work over and above the hours Im paid for. I have a sat mumber of hours whereas the fulltime hours in my job are a bit hazy.

QOD · 19/01/2012 17:47

I work part time in sales, my targets are lower. Full timer target for example £35 000 and I work 20 so £20 000

Apparently my targets are MUCH easier to reach. Yawn

laptopdancer · 19/01/2012 17:50

In our place, the full timers get pissed off because part timers dont volunteer to cover work on the days we dont work (because apparently we are just sitting around watching jezz kyle on those days)

OP posts:
QOD · 19/01/2012 17:52

Yeah the full timers complain that when we are busy, we get offered over time, only the part timers take it so we are, infact " stealing their sales "

LAlady · 19/01/2012 17:52

When I returned part-time to my old full time job, my workload didn't change but my salary did. My days "off" I took telephone calls at home. I always felt I had something to prove too and worked longer hours on the days I was actually in the office.

Part-time was not an easier option for me.

rathlin · 19/01/2012 17:56

I was a full timer for 14 yrs, then went part-time (4 days a week) last year. However I ended up doing 5 days worth of work e.g. working at home etc. From Jan 1st, back to 5 days a week.

I don't hear anyone moaning about part-timers however important projects which require you to work 20 hrs a day are not generally allocated to part-timers i.e. those working 3 days a week and therefore promotion prospects are not as frequent. Less than 1 mth into my return to 5 days a week, really miss my one day off :(

Lizzylou · 19/01/2012 17:58

I work FT now, there is a woman in my office who works p/t. I often help her out by sorting stuff when she isn't in. Not because I am saintly, but because we are a team and the company would lose out if I didn't. She would definitely do the same for me.
I don't feel resentment at all, she has young preschool age children, she works part time and gets paid part time hours, I work FT and get paid accordingly.
