I mean, we are part time...clue is in the name. And we get paid less.

Lots of moaning that full timers get work as part timers cant do it in our place.

I once worked out that I actually take home more money P/Hour (after tax) P/T compared to F/T. Something to do with tax brackets. Don't know how that works.

carrotsandcelery · 19/01/2012 18:02

LAklady and rathlin that was my experience as well. I did the job full time for years and years. I came back from Maternity leave 2 days a week and was expected to do most of what I had done before but got less pay for it. I eventually pointed it out (like I said, I was young) but it did cause resentment.

I have since realised it would have been easier to get a different job, 2 days a week, than go part time on a job I had once done full time.

redbunnyfruitcake · 19/01/2012 19:01

I hate to admit it but when I was a part timer I did so much more work in my 2.5 days than I did in a full time job. There were just so many things that couldn't be left until later because a whole week would have passed by the time they got tackled again. This is just my experience, having more time available seems to have the effect of making me lazy. As the saying goes 'if you want something done ask a busy person' and that holds true for me.

HarrietJones · 19/01/2012 19:25

At the moment I am holding the same amount of work as some of my colleagues who are f/t. I'm on a 0.5 contract.

BillyBollyBandy · 19/01/2012 19:32

I have done the same job on f/t and p/t and they def get more out of me p/t.

Like RedBunny I have to be more porductive when in the office and have no time really for chats/personal emails/lunch out that sort of thing. I get in, work solid catching up, and then go and pick dc's up.

Before I would put stuff off and ease myself into the week on a Monday am and ease myself out on a Fri pm.

Hmmm maybe that is why my hours are now Tues/Weds/Thurs... Grin

Did anybody else find they discussed in meetings and saved the really crappy jobs for the part-timer? Or was that just me?

Dozer · 19/01/2012 21:05

I leave much earlier than colleagues to pick up the DC and have limited ability in the eves and on non-working days to do any extra work. I work 3 days and leave way earlier than colleagues (commute) and, even though they don't have to cover any of my work, some (full-time) colleagues have had a problem with it.

DH (FT) drops of the DC on my working days, goes in late, gets narky comments regularly, including from his boss, his employer is much less flexible.

Dozer · 19/01/2012 21:06

Psketti, that doesn't happen at my work as the manager shares out the shitty jobs!

psketti · 19/01/2012 21:21

Dozer - I like the fairness of that. Maybe they were all shitty jobs and I was just being paranoid. Anyway I left.

Zoekate · 19/01/2012 21:21

I work in a small team in a very busy environment, every single week I get a comment about how I no longer work full time. 'enjoy your days off!' sarcastically said & numerous other stupid comments it really annoys me!
The decision I took was to go part time because I wanted to spend time with our son whatever anyone else chooses to do is their business I don't care! It has had an impact on our finances of course but the time I have with our son is worth much more to me, I just wish the comments would stop....

themothershipcalling · 19/01/2012 21:28

I think pt people do think they have more to prove, I absolutely work harder now that I only work 20 hours however every single shift - and I mean EVERY - someone will make a comment about how I'm 'hardly ever here'. It's so fucki g annoying.

themothershipcalling · 19/01/2012 21:29

*fucking obviously. Serves me right for swearing!

PreviouslyonLost · 19/01/2012 21:29

Work P/T and loathe it...Work with brilliant colleagues though, the best ever, but I'm seconded at the moment to another 'Team' (although still in own office) and the work is different so they can't help out. There are other part-timers, and one colleague who condenses 5 days into 4, so absolutely no 'enjoy your time-off' comments.

redbunnyfruit 'there are just so many things that couldn't be left until later because a whole week would have passed by the time they got tackled again' , I agree, therefore I can be in work on days off, and when on annual leave (like Monday, for 3 hours and 15 sodding minutes of precious time)

The day both DCs are in school I'll be begging for a F/T post.

( KittyFane - You do earn 'more' part time, vague notion too that it's tax related, but read on here once that part-timers pay more % to any work related pension schemes?)

TongueTwisted · 19/01/2012 21:40

I am part time after returning back to work after maternity leave through no choice of my own, company cuts due to recession. I still get the same caseload of work as someone who works full time and am expected to take paperwork home to complete on my 'days off'. Um, no that's not going to happen. Full timers are not expected to do this. If they want to cut my hours by 12 a week, I shall work to the best of my ability within my scheduled time frame.

I don't get paid if I bring work home. So I'm not doing it. Actually, I'm looking for a new job. They can't expect me to take a cut of 48 hours a month and do a full time position. Politics within the workplace is common. It's to be expected. I've never moaned about working full time when I did. Because i knew my wage reflected my hours.
