..to be slightly peeved at someone "stealing" a name?

I know this is really childish but I can't stop thinking about it.

In October I got a new cat. I named her after a girls' name that means a lot to me. I was really excited about the cat (I'm like the crazy cat lady out of The Simpsons!), and I told a friend of mine about her a few weeks after getting the cat, and what I'd named her and everything.

2 months later, this friend decided to get a dog. And names it the same as my cat. I jokingly commented on her FB "Hey, you can't call her that, that's my cats name! :P" and she claimed not to remember it and that the puppy's name was going to be Sally since they knew they were getting one (which was also after I'd gotten my cat.)

Now, I know it's not anything life changing, and I'm expecting to get a lot of "YABU"'s, but I feel a little peeved at it, I mean, I chose the name because it was pretty and I'd never heard anyone use it as an animal's name, and then my friend stole it Sad. It's all very Sex and the City-Charlotte-ish but you know Grin

lies

piratecat · 18/01/2012 19:22

pmsl chaos!!

that and the earth mother comment by boffin have made my day.

RuleBritannia · 18/01/2012 19:26

How dare you use my grandmother's pekinese's name for your cat. It was a dog's name to start with. I suppose it's all right though really, Sally died in 1954. Good Lord! Nearly 60 years ago. Took you a long time to get a cat

Boomerwang · 18/01/2012 19:33

I really wanted to call the family dog 'Elvis' but my dad said there was no way he was shouting that across a field!

dmo · 18/01/2012 19:37

My mum 30 yrs ago named our dog sally (which also happened to be her sisters name Grin) they are very close tho)

susiedaisy · 18/01/2012 19:39

It is odd that she choose the same name, I had a friend once who asked to see what colour paint I had recently chosen to paint my lounge and within a week of showing her she had gone to bq got the exact same colour and had a painter in to do her lounge before I'd even got the paint tray out of the shedHmmConfused it was very odd and I've never really found out why she did it and we just don't mention it ever!

I can understand why you're a bit peeved but I guess there's not much you can do. Is it someone you see often, who would definitely know your cat's name?

When I was a child I had a cat called Domino. He died years ago. My younger brother got a cat a couple of years later, and called it Domino too. It didn't annoy me, I just thought it showed an astonishing lack of imagination.

otchayaniye · 18/01/2012 19:51

i called my second daughter after my friend's cat. he wanted to tear my head off and vomit down my neck for that faux pas

Floggingmolly · 18/01/2012 19:54

It's hard to believe anybody really gives a shit what their friends cat is called. Confused

TheCrunchUnderfoot · 18/01/2012 20:00

Just refer to the dog as 'Sally The Second, Dog In Honour Of Cat Coca-Cola Time'

that will fettle 'er

DonkeyTeapot · 18/01/2012 20:02

Well, friends that come round regularly know what my dog is called, and it's a fairly unusual name, so if one of them got a pet and called it the same, I'd think it was a bit odd.

susiedaisy · 18/01/2012 20:03

Yeah I agree donkey

yellowraincoat · 18/01/2012 20:05

If you can't stop thinking about, maybe you need to take some action.

One of these may involve a grip and the action of getting one.

Kladdkaka · 18/01/2012 20:11

OP do I know you? Did you have homemade pizza for tea tonight by any chance? Hmm

carabos · 18/01/2012 20:15

YABU for giving your cat a human name. It's a cat, not a little girl.

IUseTooMuchKitchenRoll · 18/01/2012 20:18

Sally seems to be quite a common name for pets, I know a dog called Sally too.

One of our cats is called Sally. We got her in October. A few weeks later one of daughter's friends acquired a dog and called it Sally. Daughter was not amused.

Rhubarbgarden · 18/01/2012 20:23

Actually, I would be annoyed too. I would have to unfriend them.

QuintessentiallyShallow · 18/01/2012 20:27

You called your cat Sally. As in Sally the Alley cat?

Grin

You nutter. You dont own the name.

Forrestgump · 18/01/2012 20:28
