Well that's it really....I work in a shop nowehere near where the Olympics are being held and i've been told I can't take any holiday during the summer just incase we have a sudden rush of customers coming through our doors!!!

I planned my first child to ensure I was on mat leave for the Olympics so YANBU GrinBlush

MrsHarryPearce · 16/01/2012 20:38

YANBU. Quite how what is in essence a sports day affects every aspect of our lives this summer is beyond me.

shesparkles · 16/01/2012 20:39

YANBU. I'm in SCOTLAND and we have restricted leave AngryAngryAngry

pickofthepops · 16/01/2012 20:40

I think your boss is mental

MaureenMLove · 16/01/2012 20:42

There's a few training venues around near where you live though....

YANBU however. For every extra person there might be, there are also going to be one less person, coz it's August and they'll be on holiday surely!

Gigondas · 16/01/2012 20:44

And also if you work where i think it may be a hub for tourist spending

Gumby · 16/01/2012 20:44

We've been told if we're off sick we have to have a doctors note during Olympics
So even if a migraine will have to drag ourselves to doctors Hmm

Dartfordmummy · 16/01/2012 20:46

I'm going to tell my company they can explain to my 6 year old why we can't go to Butlins this year!! He's going to be so upset Sad

natation · 16/01/2012 20:48

Hubby cannot take leave for 6 weeks around the Olympics, neither can any other member of staff. He can only ever have a week of leave between June and September (travel industry except he doesn't get to travel), gets Christmas off 2 years in 7, works 5 weekends in 7, so count yourself lucky.

dreamingbohemian · 16/01/2012 20:49

Well that's ridiculous. If anything they should encourage people not to come to work so all the transport can be freed up for the gazillion people that are coming in.

ENormasSnob · 16/01/2012 20:51

Yanbu

cookielove · 16/01/2012 20:51

Well i am getting married and the hotels are already getting booked up, so all my guests from far away (around 30 couples) cannot book anything. So i may be able to take leave, but hey my wedding may have no one attending my wedding Sad

Haziedoll · 16/01/2012 20:52

Will there really be lots of people coming over for the olympics?

Unless you already have tickets surely you would be avoiding London/UK at all costs. Overpriced, overcrowded etc.

I think the hospitality industry is in for a bit of a shock if they are banking on it going crazy over the olympics.

wherearemysocks · 16/01/2012 20:58

Well I work in the hospitality industry, somewhere very tourist central so we will be busy, I work long hours anyway, and now we have been told that due to the road closures for 8 weeks, our delivery window which is normally at a very sensible time will be sometime between midnight and 6am!! wtaf, for 8 weeks!!! and they cant even be any more specific than a six hour window.

cookielove · 16/01/2012 20:58

My parents think that hotels are holding rooms in case lots of people want them (i leave close to London) and that they will actually be available closer to the date iyswim

fishie · 16/01/2012 20:59

we are telling everyone at work they can't take any leave. We have opposing views in management - some of us think it will cause utter chaos and we'd better plan for worst, others that a lot of it is hysteria and it will be business as usual. we do deliver a crisis service though so must make sure it operates or there is cover. We don't employ many parents of school age children so we don't usually have lots of leave in school hols.

LynetteScavo · 16/01/2012 21:00

I was told by a friend her DH is not allowed any time off during the Olympics, but her LEA is allowing children of such parents to take time off during term time for family summer holidays.

fishie · 16/01/2012 21:01

wherearemysocks I work in in central London and most recent meeting of local businesses was told that road closures and restrictions were worst case and are being downgraded. Some other stuff (like local traffic) I think was best case so East London (where I live) will be broken.

dreamingbohemian · 16/01/2012 21:03

I think they're expecting a couple hundred thousand people.

It's not that much I guess but transport in London is already maxed out, so it's enough to totally jam things up.

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/01/2012 21:04

i cant either, no leave applications at all are allowed between - get this - april and september!

lovely. not.
i feel your pain.

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/01/2012 21:04

oh - and i am in yorkshire!

piellabakewell · 16/01/2012 21:05

I'm a teacher so will be on leave anyway, but since I'm in London I decided I definitely don't want to be anywhere near home during the Olympics. Last July I went to Dubai, and before I came home had already decided to return to the same resort during the Olympics. I am expecting the roads and public transport to be chaotic around here so DP couldn't easily get to work anyway.

DressDownFriday · 16/01/2012 21:06

We also have restricted leave due to the Olympics. I fail to understand why, as I don't live anywhere near any of the venues and I'm not in a tourist spot.

There's alot of disappointed people at my work - Olympics and school holidays - not much scope for an alternative solution.

Haziedoll · 16/01/2012 21:09

VicarinaTutu - What does your Company that makes it vital everyone is there between April and September?

Whilst an employer may be entitled to dictate when an employee takes leave I think having a blanket no leave rule over a 5 month period is just asking for trouble. I bet the amount of sick leave rockets over these months.

tardisjumper · 16/01/2012 21:14

I am wondering when I am going ot be told to work from hoem during the Olympics. Becuase that's the advice to all businesses in London right?

What I do has nothing to do with the Olympics, it is an office job. Me coming into London will be hell for two weeks.

But seriously, what happened to all of this, say away from London during the olympics advice? They havne't made it compulsory so nothing is going to happen.
