So...dd2 is six months and teething. Went to bed seven, woke three times between then an eleven. Slept til one awake til three. Woke once more then up at five forty along with Mu other two dc. Now feeding her and praying she'll sleep. But as she was fussing just now, I was cross with the fact she wasn't asleep rather than sorry for her and full of compassion. Aibu? Or aib abnormal really? I feel horrible. Not the first time I've felt like it.

Have you tried an amber teething necklace ? We had one and it really worked wonders for us. The first two teeth were awful but the ones afterwards (when she had the necklace) didn't give a peep

choceyes · 16/01/2012 15:29

DO they really work? I really want them to work and they look so cute, but I just can't help being sceptical about them. It's just not scientifically possible is it?

StepfordWannabe · 16/01/2012 15:46

If your little one won't take pain relief from a spoon, have you considered the paracetamol suppository? We use Paralink and they are absolutely amazing - my poor smallie really suffered with her teeth for MONTHS and when she got really upset, she would actually throw up any medicine as her tummy wasn't right from the pain.

NinkyNonker · 16/01/2012 16:13

I am dubious about the science behind the necklaces, but dd has had no problems whatsoever with any teeth, even when 4 came in at once...ouch!

I also gave her teething granules if I suspected a teething related grizzle, she liked them and they cheered her up but who knows whether that is the same as effectiveness!

Molehillmountain · 16/01/2012 17:04

Necklace, granules and suppositories all worth a try. Are the suppositories from any old pharmacy? I guess in this country it's not the first thing you think of but it does make sense. would be quicker than sucking off a spoon!

Well ladies it is five thirty, are we all still standing.....? DD is eating forthe first time today, it's only toast but certainly better than nothing! I am SOOO tired though.

YouOldSlag · 16/01/2012 17:11

Ashton and Parsons powders worked for us. You just dip a wet finger onto them (use DC spit) and rub them onto offending teeth. Dot of kids' bonjela can also work. The thing about the powders is that they are natural so you can't OD them.

As for being grumpy with a teething baby- totally normal. Don't feel guilty. Nobody expects you to enjoy sleep deprivation, that's why nature has programmed you to love your baby so much. That way, they can test you to the limits of human endurance and you can still feel protective and gooey about them when they finally doze off.

Molehillmountain · 16/01/2012 17:24

Still standing Zimm and older dc bedtime in just over an hour! Then choc o'clock! Have done okay today despite it all-dh will be coming through the door wondering what he'll find but dinner's done and u haven't had a serious meltdown yet! How are the other teething troopers?

We had swimming earlier which helped to keep him distracted for an hour. I cheated for his dinner. I couldnt face the Indifference and upset so I gave him a pouch of Rice pudding with banana and mango, followed by a yoghurt. So not particularly dinner like but at least I know he's eaten something. Another half hour of play and then it's bed time. Tempted to go
Myself at the same time Grin

NannyTutorAtLarge · 16/01/2012 18:36

Ahhh I feel your pain! My charge (14 months) is a seriously laid-back, happy dude normally but he's getting his molars at the moment and he's in SO much pain. I'm another Calprofen convert - take it everywhere with me now and it works wonders. Means you can go about your day and have fun, and they also sleep really well after a dose! I feel really sorry for the teethers - toothache is the worst pain, and I know I put him to shame on the screaming front last time I was at the dentist...good luck!

itspeanutbutterjellytime · 16/01/2012 18:38

Just wanted to say I feel your pain on the calpol front; ds used to throw it back up if we gave him some. It was just like a double whammy; not only was he teething but now he's vomited all his dinner back so he's got an empty tummy.

I found it was easier to use a medicine syringe (I got mine free from the prescription counter at boots) and he'd suck it and I'd just gently and veeeery slowly depress the plunger. He is now able to have his 'magic medicine' with a spoon like a normal human being, but using the syringe stopped him thinking I was trying to feed him.

itspeanutbutterjellytime · 16/01/2012 18:42

And don't feel guilty for feeding them porridge or bananas for dinner! You're just trying to establish a basic 'eating 3 times a day' idea. Where's the point in slaving forever making a pasta bake if it's just going to be thrown on the floor in rage? As long as its basically healthy, don't worry. Something carb-ey will help them sleep, anyway. Will any of your DC take a feed/bottle before they go down? My DS (15 mo) still has a bottle of warm milk before bed! If it makes him sleep, I'll do it until he's 15! Grin

Seriously though, I will.

zimm · 16/01/2012 18:53

Dd in bed Smile. She ate one and a half pieces of toast and some vege purée. Purée at her age! I have wine ....Grin praying for areasonable nights sleep for us all.

Molehillmountain · 16/01/2012 18:56

Yay to baby Zimm being in bed. Dd lying on my lap asleep after feed. Waiting til she's very, very asleep til I move her (plus dh is putting other two to bed Blush) fingers and toes crossed for better night. But will have calpol at the ready! Pre school for ds tomorrow though so can sleep when dd2 sleeps. Pats on the back and choc/wine/both all round.

greenbananas · 16/01/2012 19:06

But if I really were selfish I guess I wouldn't be cuddling her and co sleeping through it.

Very true, Molehill Smile YANBU for being honest about your feelings! You sound like such lovely mummy.

Teething can be so grim for all concerned. Glad your DD is asleep now, and hope you all have a better night tonight.

minibmw2010 · 16/01/2012 19:39

He's fast asleep now (hurrah Smile) and added bonus I managed to keep him up until DH got in so he bathed and fed him.

I was hoping the carbs in the Rice Pudding would help, so fingers crossed to a good night for us all.

Smile
JugsMcGee · 16/01/2012 19:51

My DS is teething. AGAIN. Completely understand! DH has been trying to settle him for bed for an hour but he is hysterical. Normally goes down like an angel! Bastard teeth.

Molehillmountain · 16/01/2012 19:53

Ah, thanks green bananas. This thread I'm sure has got me through today without shouting. Miracle. Minibmw - result and enjoy the peace. Dd has just woken up but although she's now feeding, her eyes are shut tight so I'm hoping she'll stay down. I just can't do the days without getting everything done the night before. It only takes a missing pair of shoes and we're derailed and I'm ranting.

OP posts:
Molehillmountain · 16/01/2012 19:55

Jugs-poor you and little one. Sad hope you get some sleep and a restful evening. Teething is such a human design flaw. Dd's aren't even any use to her given that she has yet to eat! Her current food source does not appreciate them Wink

OP posts:
skybluepearl · 16/01/2012 19:57

get some calpol in baby just before you go to sleep and she may sleep through. will help you both

skybluepearl · 16/01/2012 19:58

mine refuses spoon but i can just about get a seringe to work

CavemanDave · 16/01/2012 20:02

Anbesol is really good Molehill. About 3 times stronger than the calgel/bonjela plus it is a liquid so a bit easier to apply I find. Here
DD2 and I are having a rotten bloody time with these sodding teeth. I feel your pain.

CavemanDave · 16/01/2012 20:03

I've also used the Teetha powders and homeopathic pulsatilla. I'll try owt TBH, as the first 3 teeth have given us a really shite few weeks. But Anbesol has been worth it.
