You decide you want to talk to someone, so pick up the phone, dial and basically insist that they talk to you RIGHT NOW whatever they may be doing. Yes, there is voicemail, but if someone knows you are home, its hard to not pick up. I much prefer emails, texts, even people ringing the doorbell.

The tv licence man was a joke by the way! I mute the tv so whoever is at the door can't tell we are in by hearing eastenders etc

NotaDisneyMum · 15/01/2012 20:20

The DCs, not the DPs; I couldn't cope with more than one!

IWantMyHatBack · 15/01/2012 20:20

YANBU - hate the phone. I prefer to do lots of thing via email, and i really hate it when I've contacted someone by email and asked them to email back, and they bloody phone me (I'm talking about work here). Most of the emails I send could just be replied to in about 10 seconds but no - people have to phone me up and insist on spending 10 mins on the bloody phone when I just need a yes or a no. If I've contacted you by email, bloody well respond by email Angry

This should be a capital offence: phoning someone's landline (office or home), getting an engaged tone and immediately calling their mobile. GRRRRRRR

Bunbaker · 15/01/2012 20:24

"I like getting phone calls and texts and friends and family dropping by

I think I live in a parallel universe to most on MN tbh"

Same here, but I am over 50 and use the landline as my main form of telecommunication. We are also registered with the TPS so when the phone rings it is either friends or family. I find texting a bit of a faff and much prefer a proper two way conversation that messing around texting. MIL and aged aunt have sight problems/don't use a mobile or computer so a telephone call it is. I love getting a phone call from a friend and find it a far more friendly gesture than a brief text.

I can never get over how many mn posters hate being contacted (telephone /friends or family dropping by etc). I don't live near family so when they come to stay it is always prearranged, and I don't have hundreds of friends so I am always pleased that someone has made the effort to seek me out.

I also prefer to ring a landline because it is cheaper.

southeastastra · 15/01/2012 20:26

I only get phone calls from old people like my dad and mil now Grin

though my best mate calls me, but always asks first via text if i am available

Alouisee · 15/01/2012 20:28

House phones are dead in the water. We've unplugged ours and it's the best thing we've ever done. No more spam calls, the caller gets straight to the person they want, hopefully by text or email first.

Each person has their own mobile and we have wifi so iMessage is free. It's cut down on the amount of calls that the pils make. They don't like calling mobiles, won't get to grips with text or emails so it's their loss. Our quality of life is better for not having a shrill ringtone demanding our attention.

KatieScarlett2833 · 15/01/2012 20:29

YANBU

I hate the phone. I never ever call people "just for a chat".

I prefer to chat with my friends in person. I don't mind them dropping by at all.

Caz10 · 15/01/2012 20:30

Does anyone else stand still and keep quiet while screening calls?! Grin. I hold my breath listening to the person I don't want to speak to right now leave a message!

northeastofeden · 15/01/2012 20:31

I hate the phone at home, but think it is brilliant for work. I like to see my friends and family, a phone call is a poor substitute. I ignore the phone at home and now everyone knows to just text to arrange visits, not bother with calling me!

HowlingBitch · 15/01/2012 20:34

I have a family member who never answers her phone, Then complains when her landlord doesn't get back to her about repairs etc. She also hates it when people call round without letting her know before hand.

She is impossible.

blackoutthesun · 15/01/2012 20:34

oh no home phones are demanding little shits

that ring, ring is code for 'speak to me now!'

usualsuspect · 15/01/2012 20:40

My mum lives alone and doesn't have a mobile or pc , she would be very lonely if she couldn't call her families landlines

KatieScarlett2833 · 15/01/2012 20:45

My mum is just like me usual

We can talk in person for an endless amount of time but put us on the phone together and the convo is over in about 30 seconds...

Maybe learned behaviour?

Scarlett DC never answer the phone either. It's DH or no-one here......

Miette · 15/01/2012 20:45

I love the phone ringing mid morning with out of area on it as it's family or friend from overseas.

Sales calls and withheld numbers are ignored, if it's someone real not sales they can leave a message.

UK friends ring my mobile.

Bunbaker · 15/01/2012 20:58

"I like to see my friends and family, a phone call is a poor substitute."

I prefer to see people, but my family live 250 miles away. I do text and email my sister, but I find them a poor substitute to a friendly, chatty phonecall. MIL and aged aunt both live on their own and don't use mobiles or PCs, so we communicate by phone (they both live hundreds of miles away as well).

I don't keep my mobile on all the time and everyone knows that if they want to contact me they have a better chance by ringing my landline. OH works from home and in his line of business not having a landline would give his clients the impression that he is a bit of a wide boy and a bit of a fly by night. In fact he contacts most of his clients using Skype as they are all over the world.

AChickenCalledKorma · 15/01/2012 21:00

What a relief to find I am not the only one. Caller display is my best friend.

Am now seriously contemplating silencing the landline, but will have to get used to keeping mobile properly charged first.

KnowYourself · 15/01/2012 21:02

YABU. The people who have my tel number are usually close enough that I appreciate when I recieve a call from them.
I also know that, if I am busy, I can tell them and no one will get upset.
So I can't really see where your problem is.
I would ahve a much bigger problem with people dropping in because then you really have no other choice than talking to them etc...

However I DO have a problem with mobile phones mainly because, as you are supposed to have them with you at all times, people expect you to answer straight away and get Hmm if you don't get back to them within minutes (if you have dare not to answer).

Not really looking forward to the dcs teenage years

perplexedpirate · 15/01/2012 21:06

YANBU I hate the phone ringing. It's like someone walking into my living room and shouting 'listen to me, listen to me!'.

SulkySullenDame · 15/01/2012 21:06

I couldn't live without the phone, but the flashing light on the answering machine stresses me out. Have caller id so always screen dp's parents as they talk for Scotland.
I have wine & phone chats with faraway friends and family at least once a week, sometimes for more than an hour.
The only thing that annoys me is the way my 14 year old can not talk to me for hours then insists on asking me stuff as soon as I have started chatting on the phone.

Flisspaps · 15/01/2012 21:06

I don't answer if I don't want to. I am very much a texter/emailer. I also worry about inconveniencing the person I am phoning - even if it's a business that I'm phoning Hmm

DH doesn't understand it and is of the 'what if it's an important call' ilk.
