What on earth is going on here? I have literally just seen this on the news (Do I live in some sort of bubble?)

Can someone explain how this works because it feels all wrong to me.

I have been saying for years that it should be easier to get rid of a poor teacher so I should be on Gove's side. I have seen teachers put children of learning, stop children from passing exams and be cruel to children and it has been allowed to continue.

I am not sure if Gove is talking about banning teachers from teaching again or simply enabling them to be sacked. If the latter not much is changing other than a speeding up of the process which is not a bad thing for all concerned .

However as others have said the figures being thrown around are misleading as many teachers realise they are shit and decide to move on, particularly if they cannot control a class. I cannot imagine walking into a classroom lesson after lesson facing crap from the kids . I think there also needs to be questions asked of headteachers, why are some schools able to get rid of failing teachers when others can't? Perhaps rather than a huge change headteachers need to get better at implementing legislation as it is.

Schools are also very varied places , sometimes the answer is not to remove someone from teaching but to get them to identify a school that would suit them.

I think he problem for Gove is that every teacher I have spoken to about this takes it as an attack on them. I agree with Gove generally on this issue and yet I am still concerned that he is not driven by a desire to raise standards but by a loathing of the public sector and of teachers in particular . To announce on one day that he is going to make us work longer days, for more days, for less of a pension whilst we are undergoing a payout in real terms, funding our classrooms even more than usual because of cuts, losing support staff and resources because of cuts shows a complete contempt that is worrying.

The idea that a parent can sit in my classroom to decide if I can teach also betrays his utter disdain for the teaching profession. It shows he thinks that teaching is not a profession, with special skills that need to be learned. But a job that any Tom Dick or Harry could do.

As for the idea that there is no performance management, I am performance managed to within an inch of my life. I am held accountable for every grade, utterance or sneespze in my classroom .
