To wonder why my milk wasnt accepted?

To start, this does not bother me. I am simple wondering why?

I made a ridiculous amount of milk in the early days so pumped and froze it. I cant use it now as DC is now allergic to what I was eating at the time of pumping (dairy, he wasnt allergic before). I cant donate to prem babies (apparently, Ive had different info but my local place says no) because some is too old to use now and the rest was too recent i.e my milk was made for a 5 month old which was too heavy for new born/prem baby stomachs. Makes sense!

Anyway 25 bags of the stuff are in the freezer, Ive been meaning to chuck it out. Its all fine, but no use to us.

My friend who has a nearly 3 month old bf baby is in hospital shes very ill and her milk supply has dwindled to nothing. I offered her mine until she got better and her supply increased as she didnt want to use formula unless it was a must.

But I got a no thanks but no reason.

Why? I wasnt offering to nurse the baby just offer my milk. I didnt ask her why as I didnt want to make her feel uncomfortable.

Last note, my friend is lovely this is by no means a judgement on her or her decision.

Yabu. It's none of your business - your friend knows about your milk . My BF offered me hers and I also declined .

WhiteTrash · 14/01/2012 21:14

What do you mean my friend knows about my milk? She didnt know I had a stock, thats why I mentioned it.

I told DP I was going to cook with the milk, save chucking it out. He said "NO. JUST NO. NO."

He said he'd cook with his piss then, see how I liked it.

He compared my milk to piss?!

He said in his defence, its one of the few liquids he can produce!

It was all said in jest, it was quite funny but I didnt mention that Id offered it to a friend, I guess DP agrees with those of you who think IABU.

Disclaimer: I fully intend to cook with it, teach the wanker to compare my milk to piss and also for having not cooked a meal in years. Grin eeeevul Grin

Hiya Ive not read all the posts OP just fast forwarded to the end. My DSr & I had babies 5 weeks apart. My sister had to go into hospital suddenly when she took unwell. Her baby was BF and so was mine. I had a load of supply and I gave her DH loads of my frozen milk to feed the baby when she was in. They were so grateful and they have since returned the favour for me when my MIL took unwell and I had to take her to hospital suddenly. On the other hand my DH is a bit wierd about Breast milk, like if the baby is sick on him after taking Breast milk he freaks out & is all ewww milk from you. Im all "grow a pair you moron, my milk is helping ours & my DS's baby live to grow"

oldmerryolesoul · 14/01/2012 21:37

You need to be sccreened before you offer ilk and it has to be donated in the sterile milk bottles provided by you local milk bank.

My DS has received DBM and I have been a donator myself

oldmerryolesoul · 14/01/2012 21:41

Another donater here to the Oxford milk bank, my and DS's picture is on the UKAMB site. I would contact them and go theough the official channels and they will probably take new milk

WhiteTrash · 14/01/2012 21:50

Is that your picture at the top?

Ive already contacted them. They said they do take breastmilk from a mum nursing a 6 month plus baby (unlike my local bank) but they dont collect from my area. Bummer.

Agree with all the others, I donated my milk, it was quite a long process of screening and the actual collecting, I donated for Southampton, I don't think you're being naive just v.generous and nice, well done for thinking of your friend :)

G1nger · 14/01/2012 22:11

It's body fluid. It can transmit disease. It would also be humiliating, in my view, for your friend. I know you meant well, but she's said no and you shouldn't be offended. My partner would freak the f out if I even thought of accepting in your friend's position.

TalkinPeace2 · 14/01/2012 22:25

I donated to our local hospital milk bank
you have to have a less than 1 year old aids test
and use their standard bottles and labels

but I gave them 15 litres for premy babies whose mums were too stressed to express

they have to be REALLY strict on quality control because otherwise they could be liable

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 14/01/2012 22:30

the odds formula is required for some babies ( yes shock horror it really is !) who are slow growers , premature , ill etc etc . Breast milk I am afraid does not suit all situations and all babies.
The most important thing is that a baby has a content mother and that the baby thrives on what ever milk it takes .
It is not the most important thing for a baby to be breast fed .

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 14/01/2012 22:38

Just to add how many mothers breastfeed then go on to wean their babies on mass produced jars of baby food that contain cows milk !!
If people really want to provide the best for their babies why not breastfeed and then go on to feed them totally home made food? . I never ever fed either of my DC a jar of baby food. Jars of baby food contain so much water and far far less protein .
Never see threads raising the issue of baby jars versus home made food.

hoops997 · 14/01/2012 22:47

very true nanny my DS never had any of that crap jarred baby food, he was BLW, it's also cheaper making your own, it's quite expensive to feed a baby 'special' food

bigbarnfarmer · 14/01/2012 22:48

PMSL at comparing breast milk to piss. Only a man could come up with that. Perhaps cook with both and see if he hasw a preference. Just to prove a point. FFS i know alot of folk who drink milk but not so many who drink piss!

Hilarious!

nannyplum i think the majority of people who breast feed for any length of time go on to feed home cooked healthy food. Those who breast feed and move on to jars/packets etc are a small minority.
