to not really see the appeal of baby outfits?

DS is 12 weeks old and pretty much always wears all-in-one long sleeved baby gros. If it's cold, he'll have a little cardie or jumper on top.
I went to a baby massage class at our GPs on Monday and there were 4 other babies there all of whom were dressed in baby outfits, by which I mean the boys has little jeans and t-shirts etc with cardies and the girls had similar or little skirt things ie baby versions of adult clothing.
One of the other mums said to me "Oh, sometimes I'm a bit lazy too and don't really get him dressed properly, I just stick him in a babygro". It had never occurred to me that people might think I'm lazy because DS isn't wearing a mini-me costume.
We have been given loads of outfits for him but to be honest, he never wears them. Many don't fit well and I find the trousers seem to be especially uncomfortable/unyielding around DS' middle. He had dungarees on a few weeks ago at the ILs and we spent all day trying to untangle him and stop them riding up. They're also a nightmare to get on only to be vomited on within an hour.
Am I the only one who is quite happy for my baby to be wearing nothing but baby gros? I'm not saying that people SHOULDN'T dress their own babies in anything they like but am I the only one who doesn't go for outfits? Also, do you really think people who dress their babies in babygros are lazy and not dressing them "properly"?

Well, if you're lazy I am too! I only dressed my DSs in babygros until they were 3 or 4 months. And then it was into very soft loose things, like this.
YANBU-they are!

Kayano · 12/01/2012 13:12

I just got a bag full of designer outfits donated and am very excited.

Sorry but...

I don't care what your baby wears... I care what my baby wears Wink

Oh woops that's so cute. I agree with the babygro option, that's all I've bought and don't see any reason to go wasting money on anything else until my baby is of a reasonable age. YA most def not BA.

woopsidaisy · 12/01/2012 13:16

But they don't look comfy Kayano! Step away from the bag!! Grin
I visited a girl who had just had first baby. He was 5 days old, in jeans, button shirt and Caterpillar bootie things....poor wee man looked lost in this ridiculous outfit! Babies are made for babygros IMO....but I will begrudgingly agree that you have your own opinion on this.

shesparkles · 12/01/2012 13:17

YANBU I did the same. There's not a lot I dislike more than seeing a wee baby in denim. Yes I KNOW it's softer than grown up denim, but it's still not as soft as other fabrics on their delicate skin

MixedBerries · 12/01/2012 13:20

Kayano, do you want all mine? Got bags of them too! Brand new with tag.

YANBU. I personally hate seeing baby boys in jeans and girls in those frilly tutus.

Mine spent most of their time in white babygrows as babies. I love babies in white babygrows!

Or I dressed DS in things like daisy linked to and DD in things like this

All I could think about was how uncomfortable it would be with bunched up fabric around their waists etc. so uncomfortable!!

deliciousdevilwoman · 12/01/2012 13:20

Horses for courses. I have never put a baby gro on DD (now aged 13 mths) when going out-either baby groups/shopping etc. I wouldn't judge anyone who does differently, as lazy though.

blackoutthesun · 12/01/2012 13:23

ooh little baby outfits are lovely Smile

but dd had reflux so it was baby gro's all the way as they were easy to wash and dry

Bart1maeus · 12/01/2012 13:24

I did babygros until about 3 months (cotton at night and velour in the day 'cos our place is quite cold) then started on little outfits like dungarees. Only used trousers once cos he has digestion problems and the waistband was not helping!

Mind you, the outfits are only when we go out somewhere. If we're staying in it's babygros still (DS is 3.5 months). I find the outfits aren't more fiddly than babygros but more soggy as Ds loves chewing the straps!

And I agree with disliking denim. We're only got a couple of denim dungarees (aged 6months+) which were presents. Fortunately they're lined with nice soft material.

radstar · 12/01/2012 13:29

yanbu - I did the same as you the only outfits we had were bought by
other people and went on only if visiting that person or going somewhere a bit different. They were only simple ones too I don't really like the mini adult clothes ie shirts, ties etc and the jeans always look bulky and uncomfortable.

screamingeels · 12/01/2012 13:31

Of course YANBU, its up to you how you dress your child and what you find attractive. Baby-gros are also obviously a lot easier when they first begin to crawl and move about, no straps, buttons, hems to get caught up in.

I also think it may depend a bit on the baby - DD was a nightmare until she could get about. Some days dressing her up in a nice outfit, taking her out, getting compliments was a necessary mental boost and break from the incessant feeding/ wailing/ struggling cycle. I think conversely DS may have been in baby-gros 'til he walked!

DeWe · 12/01/2012 13:36

Dd1 stayed in babygros, but she was so horrified when dd2 was born that I was "taking her sister out in her night clothes" I used to dress dd2. She also liked to have a matching outfit on, so dd2 was usually dressed.
Ds when going out I dressed him when tiny because it was hot and I wanted him in something light cotton, but once the weather had cooled down I put dungarees over the top of a babygro. It looked like he had socks (but they stayed on) and a long sleeve t-shirt on, and was comfy for him too.

BettySwollocksandaCrustyRack · 12/01/2012 13:38

When pg with DS I had a whole room full of lovely little outfits for him.

However, he stayed mainly in babygro's and his outfits stayed in the cupboards unworn, lol.

Had I had another baby I wouldnt have bothered at all but of course, before you have the first one you aint a clue really :)

Happenstance · 12/01/2012 13:40

Did the outfit thing with DD never again its baby-gros all the way this time :)

Pancakeflipper · 12/01/2012 13:42

I love babygros. So cute and so easy to launder. I used them until they were sitting up in the day but still used them for bedtime until they no longer made the size I needed.

I still have a few babygros hidden in a drawer that my kids wore cos' I love them so much I cannot throw them away. Never did that with a pair of mini sized jeans.

Maisieskates · 12/01/2012 13:47

Am totally with you and the babygros. Don't worry what anyone else thinks or does.
I personally preferred babygros as to me they were easier to put on and change when dirty, looked more comfy to wear and sleep in and made DD look like a cute little baby. Plenty of time for the outfits (and expense) later on.
In fact, DD is 9mths now and still sometimes wears babygros Blush.

lazylula · 12/01/2012 13:47

MIne wore romper suits during the day and babygrows at night, the only difference between the 2 was the way they did up, the babygrows buttoned down the front, the rompers did up under the nappy. They also wore soft dungaree sets like the one posted further up the thread once they were a month or so old and soft trousers and tops in similar materials. I liked to differentiate between night and day, it is all personal choice.

BandOMothers · 12/01/2012 13:49

I think there is some odd inverted snobbery on MN about this. The majority of Mnrs look down on "outfits" and seem to crow over the parents who like them.

Very weird. I don't judge babies in their outfits. I like a nice frock and leggings for my little girls as much as I liked comfy all in ones...I don't judge babies on what they wear OR their parents.

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 12/01/2012 13:54

I hate babies in denim - I hate boys in shirts, ties or suits - I have recently seen a 3 month old baby boy in a full suit inc tie and black shoes, very uncomfy looking! My DS only wore a shirt when he was about 14 months and that was for a christening with a t shirt underneath it, we're at a wedding this weekend with another boy a year younger than DS and his mother has text to say say she has bought him a full suit with matching waistcoat to the men's suits - the bride did not ask her to do this and he is not part of the ceremony - I just cringed a lot and hope that my DS will look as cute in his black pants and shirt/t shirt combo with converse not full on black school shoes (although I do blame the shops for selling these things in such tiny sizes - its just immoral)

Kayano · 12/01/2012 13:54

I agree bandofmothers

Popoozle · 12/01/2012 13:55

My DD (5 months) wears an outfit every day - nothing frilly or elaborate though, just plain soft dresses, leggings & long sleeve t-shirts. On the odd occasion I have kept her in a babygro during the day I have felt lazy & kept thinking "I must get you dressed in a minute".

However, when we go out & see other babies I think nothing of it if they are wearing babygros - or anything else for that matter.

RubyLovesMayMay · 12/01/2012 13:56

I think for me 3-4 months is my cut off point. I refuse to buy anything outfit-y when they are smaller than that. They'd probaly only wear it once.

bebemoojem · 12/01/2012 13:57

Dd2 is 5m and is only occasionally 'getting dressed' now in leggings/cotton trousers and shirts/ sweaters. When they do so much sleeping I don't see the point in putting 'real' clothes as they're so uncomfortable with bunches of fabric and buttons on the back or in 'pinchy' places. My sister who's baby is 2 months older laughed when at Christmas I still hadn't got mine dressed. "Does she ever wear anything besides pjs?" she asked laughing. Heck, if I could get away with sleeping all day and being in my comfy pjs all the time I certainly would Wink
