to not really see the appeal of baby outfits?

DS is 12 weeks old and pretty much always wears all-in-one long sleeved baby gros. If it's cold, he'll have a little cardie or jumper on top.
I went to a baby massage class at our GPs on Monday and there were 4 other babies there all of whom were dressed in baby outfits, by which I mean the boys has little jeans and t-shirts etc with cardies and the girls had similar or little skirt things ie baby versions of adult clothing.
One of the other mums said to me "Oh, sometimes I'm a bit lazy too and don't really get him dressed properly, I just stick him in a babygro". It had never occurred to me that people might think I'm lazy because DS isn't wearing a mini-me costume.
We have been given loads of outfits for him but to be honest, he never wears them. Many don't fit well and I find the trousers seem to be especially uncomfortable/unyielding around DS' middle. He had dungarees on a few weeks ago at the ILs and we spent all day trying to untangle him and stop them riding up. They're also a nightmare to get on only to be vomited on within an hour.
Am I the only one who is quite happy for my baby to be wearing nothing but baby gros? I'm not saying that people SHOULDN'T dress their own babies in anything they like but am I the only one who doesn't go for outfits? Also, do you really think people who dress their babies in babygros are lazy and not dressing them "properly"?

I've never thought of jeans / dungarees for babies as 'costumes' or outfits. It never occurred to me that I'm dressing DS up to look cute. If anything, he looks cuter in his sleep suits!

For me, sleep suits are only for indoor wear, like pyjamas or a tracksuit for an adult, so I only put DS in them when we're at home. When we go out, I put 'proper' clothes on him as I do for myself e.g. jeans, dungarees and a top or jumper, unless it's just a quick trip to the shops. Admittedly when he was very small, we hardly ever got out much so he did spend most of his time in sleep suits.

YANBU I agree.

MidsomerM · 12/01/2012 22:49

Both mine were in babygros until they started crawling and the feet stretched as they crawled.

I actually think babygros are more practical for outdoor wear than " proper" clothes, because baby is covered completely, rather than having gaps of bare skin at top of socks, around tummy etc.

I used babygros. But if dressing up your baby in outfits makes you happy I really don't see the issue. I was just too lazy to do this.

DD2 (2 months) in Babygros, will stay in them till she fits into some outfits we were given and which DD1 had, at about 4 months. They are just t-shirts and leggings, so much the same really. As soon as I put an outfit on now, she voms down it and down me.

my sons lived in babgros for ages, but complimented by interesting socks Grin

A baby-gro and an all-in-one coat makes quite a good combo in winter -
and you're ready for anything !

dd had a fabulous silver "millenium costume" for her first winter of 1999/2000 Smile

< looks about furtively to check if I've outed myself there Grin >

astreetcarnamedknackered · 12/01/2012 22:59

I still keep my one year old in a 'gro a couple of times a week Blush

MixedBerries · 12/01/2012 23:22

Juggling, a millennium costume? Sounds fabulous! And I too favour the gro and all-in-one coat look. DS currently sports a red and blue stripey coat kindly donated (along with everything else) by the lovely couple up the road.
Oh, and I'd like to point out that his gro and cardie combo are always matching. That DOES bother me for some reason. Can't be doing with colour clash.

I'd wear babygros most days if I could Grin

My 12 week old ds spends most of his time in baby gros. Much more comfy than all those little outfits, although I do dress him in little jeans or dungarees if we are going out, mainly because we were bought loads and it seems a waste for him to never wear them! I'll probably keep him wearing baby gros for a few months yet, he has years and years to wear jeans etc and won't be a baby for long...

Leggings and tops are great, especially the sort that come in coordinating two packs.
One set on the baby, one set in the changing bag. Change top or bottom dependent on source of mess.
Lighter than carrying two spare baby grows. I found it easier to change leggings rather than a baby grow on an older very wriggly baby. (DD1 just foiled the popper lining up every time, very frustrating when there is a queue for the changing room). Once they can sit up tops are easier too.

I was like this with DD and she stayed in babygros till she was 6 months or so but DS will be my last baby and we've got bought some little outfits for him and I can't resist dressing him up because he looks so CUUUUUUUTE!!!! LIKE A GREAT BIG BOY!!! LITTEL CUTE LITTLE FLEECY TROUSERS WITH TEDDIES ON!!!! it helps that he is ginormous at four months, entirely bald and looks like an utter bruiser. Kind of like a tiny version of Phil Mitchell. Smile Smile Smile Smile
