AIBU for expecting her not to pay with vouchers at a restaurant?

I'm meeting my friend the first weekend in February again. I haven't seen her for nearly three years as she was working abroad. We decided to go out for dinner and I ask her where she wants to go. She proposed an Italian restaurant because she can get vouchers on the internet for it. I feel slightly embarrassed by this but haven't said anything. Is it right to pay in a restaurant with a 50% voucher? She can easily afford it.

AIBU?

I'm off for my birthday meal next week using Clubcard vouchers, as suggested/funded by my wealthy sensible mother. Cheers Tesco ma!

No-one forces the restaurant to issue vouchers. Why would you feel sorry for them that someone has responded to their marketing campaign?

gobbledegoop · 11/01/2012 20:51

Weirdo.

TheParanoidAndroid · 11/01/2012 20:52

Bonkers as conkers. Mad as a box of cut snakes.

Has MN finally gone mad?

In case you hadn't worked it out OP, you are more bonkers than conkers!

CharminglyOdd · 11/01/2012 20:53

OP, I can promise you that if the voucher is for 50% of the food you will be bombarded with questions about whether you'd like alcohol, more drinks, tea or coffee, food not included in the voucher, etc. etc. My boss issued a very good deal once and then issued strict orders that we were to push the expensive extras like there was no tomorrow. They haven't issued vouchers for no reason, as others have said.

duckdodgers · 11/01/2012 20:53

haha, to say you are being mad would be doing the genuine mentally ill a disservice whereas you just sound like a snob.

As many people have already explained restaurants sign up for these type of deals, mmm let me think why...is it possibly to attract customers Hmm

Figgyrolls · 11/01/2012 20:57

You will go in, you will eat there, you will still be paying more than cost price for the food (they aren't stupid) and because you are getting a deal you are likely to spend more money on drinks because you can. Bearing in mind that most bottles of wine have a 60-70% mark up on cost price, they won't be doing badly. Infact they will be doing pretty well.

If you are so bothered and can afford it leave a big tip, or buy your mate something elsewhere and you pick up the tab. Maybe no everyone is as well off as you.

rathlin · 11/01/2012 20:57

You need to get yourself on moneysavingexpert.com website and sign up for their weekly email. Full of money saving tip and loads of vouchers for half-price meals, two for one etc. It's run by Martin Lewis who you see on tv a lot giving money saving advice. Before I spend money on any major purchase or switch utilities etc, I check there.

Garliccheesechips · 11/01/2012 21:00

Whatever you do, DON'T tell the OP about TopTable. Her head would explode...

BrandyAlexander · 11/01/2012 21:09

I have never ever heard anyone say they wouldn't use vouchers. who doesn't like a good bargain?!

CuriousMama · 11/01/2012 21:11

wind up surely?

WellBlowMeDown · 11/01/2012 21:13

Yabu. Vouchers are available for top restaurants and it's a great thing to take advantage of.

suebfg · 11/01/2012 21:16

YABU - totally. Get over yourself!

lainey8 · 11/01/2012 21:19

Do you insist on paying full price for a box of roses selling at £5 down from £8?!

My only suggestion is to pay a tip on the Pre-voucher cost of the meal. Otherwise it's the waiting staff, who probably can't afford it, who get less. Nit just the restaurant which will have calculated that they can afford it and in fact probably gain through increased custom.

NinjaChipmunk · 11/01/2012 21:19

yabu and more than slightly odd about the whole thing. I do not understand you.

ilovesooty · 11/01/2012 21:26

In agreement with everyone else. My friend and I are regulars in our local, expensive, family run Greek restaurant and we use vouchers all the time. I wouldn't eat there at full price. My friend is taking me to a restaurant for my birthday where we have a phone voucher for one main course free, one paid. As others said the restaurants do OK out of it.

Oh, and I went away for 2 weeks to Cyprus on a Groupon voucher. No one in that hotel had paid full price as far as I ever found out.

Get over yourself.

balia · 11/01/2012 21:27

I meet up with a friend once a month - we always pick somewhere we can get a good deal on. Don't worry, OP, you will still be able to show off massively about how much money you can afford to throw away make sure the small family run restaurant gets the full value of your terribly impressive custom, even if your friend is one of us cheapskates.

Bogeyface · 11/01/2012 21:33

THe only time I objected to this was when we went out with friends and we had always paid our exact share of the bill, they always insisted on this. Ok fairy nuff.

But this one time they paid their share with vouchers, and we found out afterwards that the vouchers were for 1 free main course when another main course was purchased, so basically, they got a free dinner only because we paid for ours! In that case, if we had had the vouchers I would have asked the waiter to take off the value of the vouchers from the bill and then split that so each couple got 50% off. After all, what would they have done if we had vouchers too? We found out because she had been crowing about getting a free meal because of us to other friends. We havent been out with them since and funnily enough, neither have the friends they were bragging to!

iklboo · 11/01/2012 21:40

We've not paid full price in restaurants for ages. Vouchercloud, Tastecard, Internet vouchers.

Sandalwood · 11/01/2012 21:40

It sounds like if she didn't have the vouchers you'd be eating somewhere else.
Which is sort of the point in the restaurant issuing them.

PuggyMum · 11/01/2012 21:45

I get restaurant vouchers all the time, online and via Groupon and voucher cloud app on my iPhone.

My group of friends all use vouchers. We have professional jobs etc but it's ridiculous not to use them!

If it's a special occasion we'll push the boat out with some fizz or cocktails and we tip appropriately.

Other posters are right in the profit is in the drinks anyway!

IMO. YABVU!! And a bit silly too!!
