To want to diet while pg?

charkey · 09/01/2012 23:23

I've been doing ww pro points for a few months now and its working really well for me so far, and after a lifetime of no excercise I'm actually doing some, but it is hard (as it should be I suppose!)

I'm not 100%, but I might be pg, which would be fantastic news on every level except this one. I had GD in my first pregnancy and ended up having a very very large baby and never really lost weight after giving birth, and just feel that finally i'm sticking to a diet, and want to keep sticking to it?

What do you think?

Why not discuss it with your MW or GP? First of all make sure you're def pg of course, but if you are then while you're waiting for an appointment could you switch to the number of points you'd be allowed if you were trying to maintain your current weight?

ImperialBlether · 09/01/2012 23:34

I ate really healthily whilst pregnant and whilst I didn't lose weight, I didn't put much on.

Think of it as feeding your baby - only the best will do!

And congratulations, btw, if you are.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/01/2012 23:36

I think a healthy eating plan rather than a diet is in order. Just don't eat crap. Lots of fruit veg and lean protein with brown starch and good oils. Don't scrimp on the dairy.

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/01/2012 23:38

What is so bad about losing weight whilst pregnant? Is it that it is out of kilter with the weight you need to put on, so maintaining is actually losing iyswim as you are growing a baby?

ReduceRecycleRegift · 09/01/2012 23:43

hard to tell because with WW you can do it in a really healthy way (increasing veg portions and feeling full on protein instead of sugar/starch) or a really unhealthy way (cereal bars, diet products with lots of sweetners/salt/crap etc).

What have you eaten on WW in the last couple of days?

I think its a very good idea to keep on top of your weight/health in pregnancy (from someone who didn't) you need your strength and energy when you're carrying around a new baby all day. I would definitely "diet" in pregnancy next time but I wouldn't do WW I'ld do Clean and Lean because its all good stuff for the baby and you can eat as much of the "best" foods as you want (they're not like the 0 pt WW food, all kinds of things are in best that would have WW points)

entropyglitter · 09/01/2012 23:47

I dont think there is anything wrong with a sensible dieting plan during pregnancy...at least not if the TV shows are to be believed. Just get some advice and make sure nothing essential is missing.

Having had HG I can tell you that keeping little more than the odd biscuit and some tinned custard down every day for 4 months wasnt considered to be a nutritional disaster for my growing baby. I was trying to keep a folic acid plus vitamin tablet down too but wasnt always so successful with that.

Still had a big baby though...

This is of course only anecdotal evidence so get the full story from midwife/GP.

Ghoulwithadragontattoo · 09/01/2012 23:49

What is your BMI? If you are actually overweight it can be a good idea to carry on losing weight while pg. I would discuss it with your midwife though. If you are a normal weight then I think just eating healthily is the way to go.

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/01/2012 23:52

I'm way into the obese category, but at almost 20 weeks I still haven't seen a friggin midwife and it isn't for lack of trying.

WorraLiberty · 09/01/2012 23:54

Pregnancy/pre pregnancy is the very best time to eat healthily and exercise if you don't normally.

As others have said, discuss it with your Midwife.

Tell them what you're eating and what exercise you do.

WorraLiberty · 09/01/2012 23:54

You've never seen one Starlight?

Have you seen your GP?

entropyglitter · 09/01/2012 23:56

Whoa!Star What's going on? Are you in the UK?

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/01/2012 23:58

Yes I'm in the UK, but they're shutting all the maternity hospitals aren't they and there is no where that I can get to with two under fives and no driving license. I'm not in the sticks either. I'm in commuter London.

StarlightMcKenzie · 09/01/2012 23:59

There is a midwife that comes to the GP's surgery every now and then but can never get an appointment as she is always fully booked for forseable future.

StarlightMcKenzie · 10/01/2012 00:00

Yes, I've seen the GP who declared that she couldn't find a heartbeat but not to worry as she's no good at the midwife stuff.

Never had a urine sample taken either, although blood pressure has been taken twice (once when first went to doctor).

charkey · 10/01/2012 00:04

Reducerecycle - I've had cheerios (30g) with skimmed milk for breakfast, tuna sandwich on brown bread (with no mayo or anything) and an apple for lunch, and chicken and vegetables / small portion of tortellini in a tomato sauce for dinner... water for the most part with the occasional diet coke, and some carrots for snacks.

I'm pretty heavy, not totally sure of BMI but weigh 14 stone now (down from much more) and am about 5'5.. and a half :)

The excercise is pretty hard going, i've been doing zumba and wii fit, which just has me exhausted, so I suppose if I am pg I'll have to do something a bit gentler?

I'm pretty sure I'm pregnant, my DH and I BD'd right before ovulation time and three weeks later I have the same cramps, sore boobs, hungover/hungry sick feeling I remember from my 1st DC... I'm going to test tomorrow and am half excited, half dreading doing it because I've been big all my life and never usually make it past the first week of a diet, let alone lose weight and actually enjoy it!

WorraLiberty · 10/01/2012 00:05

Oh that's bloody disgraceful Sad

WorraLiberty · 10/01/2012 00:08

charkey good luck

I would lay off the really strenuous stuff until you've done the test...then if it's positive, there are other exercises you can do. I'm sure your midwife/GP will advise on that.

You have every reason in the world to stick to the diet now as you're doing it for your baby as well as you.

Please let us know the results of the test...if you want to of course Smile

CatpussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 10/01/2012 00:08

Dont worry Starlight! At least your doctor tried to hear the heart beat! I got to 36 weeks and had never heard either of mine! The midwife at the parentcraft classes I attended, was shocked and got the doppler out there and then!

StarlightMcKenzie · 10/01/2012 00:11

Yes it is. I never got my 20 week scan letter so once I'd figured out where to call about it they were also fully booked and can't see me until 23 weeks.

I booked another appointment with my GP however in the meantime because I think that SOMEONE somewhere should see me. I haven't got any notes either.

StarlightMcKenzie · 10/01/2012 00:12

lol cat. If it is THAT unimportant why do they do it at all then?

squeakytoy · 10/01/2012 00:12

swimming is brilliant exercise if you are pregnant, and most places do an aqua aerobics class too, I see loads of pregnant women at that and at the aqua natal class as well

you can still diet while pregnant, just by keeping on cutting out the rubbish that your baby doesnt need anyway... alcohol will be off the menu now, so thats helpful for the diet, and the baby doesnt need loads of bread, or chocolate, or fizzy drinks either.. stuff yourself daft with fruit and veg, and lots of protein and you will not gain pounds from the eating, just from the pregnancy.

workshy · 10/01/2012 00:14

I would stick to the WW but go for mainatainance -so increase daily points by 5 and make sure you use your weeklies

good luck :)

WorraLiberty · 10/01/2012 00:17

Starlight I really would kick up the mother of all fusses at the GP's because that sounds nothing short of dangerous to be honest Sad

StarlightMcKenzie · 10/01/2012 00:24

I don't even know WHO to kick up a fuss with. I'm in a new trust and the community midwives as well as the place that I am now booked for a scan are attached to a completely different hospital to the one I am officially under. I was told I would get my notes at my 20 week scan, but how that is going to happen when the scan is not in the hospital I am under I can only wonder, and anyway it will be at 23 weeks.

I'm in St Albans btw if anyone is interested. So you see, not a blimmin village on an Island.

I do need to see someone though because I have the stomach of a 9month pregnant woman atm and with my other two I NEVER showed. I feel like my upper stomach is bloated and stretched in the extreme and the baby is only supposed to be the length of a pen and still mostly in my pelvis.

StarlightMcKenzie · 10/01/2012 00:26

OP, sorry to hijack.

But I currently don't eat much at all. I'm not dieting, although overweight, but due to my overbloated stomach I feel absolutely stuffed to the extent I need to lie down just from a quarter of a sandwich.
