To want to diet while pg?

charkey · 09/01/2012 23:23

I've been doing ww pro points for a few months now and its working really well for me so far, and after a lifetime of no excercise I'm actually doing some, but it is hard (as it should be I suppose!)

I'm not 100%, but I might be pg, which would be fantastic news on every level except this one. I had GD in my first pregnancy and ended up having a very very large baby and never really lost weight after giving birth, and just feel that finally i'm sticking to a diet, and want to keep sticking to it?

What do you think?

StarlightMcKenzie I suggest you change to Watford General as that isn't too far but if you're in central London go to UCH.

StarlightMcKenzie · 10/01/2012 00:51

I am at Watford General. When I have been there they have been great, (once for scan and once for repeat bloods) but it took me 3 hours to get there and 2 hours to get back with two kiddies who were supposed to be in nursery. They still didn't give me my notes though.

Wittsend13 · 10/01/2012 01:00

OK that's odd they won't give you your notes. Ask for them next time you're there Starlight.

Sorry OP and no you're not being unreasonable to diet while pg. You can still follow the plan but you'll have to up your points or whatever it is they use nowadays. Speak to your group leader he/she will be able to advise you better.

LivingDead · 10/01/2012 01:26

I would stick to what you are eating now, but maybe up your points a little. I developed GD with my last baby and had to follow a diet, plus I took insulin.

They seemed to get mad at me for following their advice and having ketones in my urine Hmm. I lost a shedload of weight whilst I was pg, which is apparently a bad thing, I ended up having to eat malt loaf just before bed on medical advice Hmm, yummy though.

I think if you have been doing it for a few months then keep on, your body will be used to it. For me the whole low GI thing was basically a diet, hence the ketones and weight loss.

Good luck anyway and hope you are upduffed.

I have lost weight in both my pgs, the most successful diets I've ever been on Grin

I wasn't trying to lose weight, it just happened. First pg was due to doing that new parent thing of trying to do your very best so I tried to eat 5 a day and not eat crap. Second pg I developed GD and the required diet resulted in a big weight loss.

If you've had GD before then will you not be advised to follow the diet again anyway? I remember going to a session with a nutritionist after my diagnosis and there were women there who were only there because they'd had it before. You may find that the diet results in some loss anyway. Cutting out the carbs was what did it for me I think.

It's fine, if you are significantly over weight the idea is that you don't end up heavier by the end of the 9 months. But you need to make sure you are eating enough nutrients for you both, obviously. TBH when i was pregnant I wasn't hungrier, just really really thirsty, so you should be fine.
Congratulations!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 10/01/2012 10:41

I'm 41 weeks now (and a size 22). I've put on 8lbs so far and baby was estimated at 7lb 8oz at 36 weeks so I assume I'll end up a good bit lighter in a week or so!

Same thing happened when I had DD. I've eaten pretty sensibly all the way through. There's nothing wrong at all with doing that. What they obviously don't want you to do is starve! :)

DoesNotGiveAFig · 10/01/2012 10:48

What does BD'd mean??? Bonked??

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/01/2012 11:28

I think that BD = baby-dancing - which is having sex with the intention of getting pregnant.

Re: dieting in pregnancy - I would have thought that, as long as you are eating a healthy diet, with enough of all the food groups, and as long as the baby is growing properly, then either maintaining your pre-pregnancy weight, or losing some during pregnancy, should be fine.

It would be worth asking your WW leader about this - I'd assume they'd have some guidelines for pregnant weightwatchers. You might need a letter from your gp, to say it's OK for you to carry on with WW, though.

FantasticDay · 10/01/2012 11:32

Hi OP. As I understand it, WW allows you to use your points on whatever you like - so you could be eating either a healthy or unhealthy diet and still losing weight. You could consider switching to Slimming World, which is a bit stricter in that it insists on a balance - but also allows unlimited jacket potatoes, rice, pasta etc, which could be more practical with the PG munchies! I would check with your consultant though what the advice is with pregnancy. Good luck!

auntmargaret · 10/01/2012 12:02

I always lost weight when pregnant too, partly morning sickness but mainly just feeling full up of baby and not being able to eat big portions. Both babies way over 8lbs (DD1 almost 9lbs) So I would speak to GP/midwife and just continue to eat sensibly though probably not diet. You might get a nice surprise when baby comes out and you're all svelte! Good luck.

Starlightmckenzie I don't mean to be a Internet weirdo but do you mind if I pm you?

StarlightMcKenzie · 10/01/2012 12:38

I don't mind but I sometimes don't 'notice' someone has PMed me for ages so don't take it personally if I do the same to you.
