Expecting that a 7 year old could make a simple meal?

I would like my kids to start taking more responsibility, they totally take for granted all i do, like most their age i imagine. However given they are getting older i want to help them become more responsible and more independant.

My 7 year old enjoys food, like sto help in the kitchen and has been making cups of tea for a while now. I was thinking tomorrow i might let him prepare a simple meal, with minimal supervision.

AIBU? and does anyone who thinks its fair enough have any simple meal suggestions.

DS is 9 (just) and has been "cooking" for over a year, so he must have started at 7.

I don't think it can be done in any expectation of taking load off you, though, OP - DS cooking is hard work and I generally get DH to supervise. The only exception is that he will now sort out his own breakfast, and DD's if he is in a good mood and the moon is blue - including toast, but no other cooking as I am generally not in the room. He has made a chocolate trifle for my birthday, cheese souffles for a family dinner, and is a dab hand at pancakes. He knows how to chop properly and how to make bechamel sauce - and he does it because he loves it, not because I am using him as child labour.

I think I might have been a bit soft with DS. I only let him start making cups of tea at 9 and he only learnt to start making simple meals because he had to complete it for his home help badge with cubs.

He is way more capable than what I thought and has now actually made Pork chops with potatoes and veg!!

If the child is keen then let him learn as I have learnt. Its a great part of the day when we're both in the kitchen together preparing a meal Smile
