to want a new cot

Just got my old cot down from the attic for DD2 who's about to grow out of her crib, and it reeks of animal wee. There's obviously something up there... the cot has been lying on the floor uncovered for a few years.

I've disinfected it and it still smells. And now I'm reluctant to let her sleep in it.

I'm pretty sleep deprived and exhausted myself at the moment so can't see the wood for the trees, but I don't know whether I am being unreasonable to think I should just get a cheap new cot.

What would you do?

New cot.

CrackerHatsandStetsonsAreCool · 08/01/2012 18:51

What DoMe said.

SiamoNellaMerda · 08/01/2012 18:51

This is not difficult. Get a new cot.

namechangerbat · 08/01/2012 18:51

Get a new one.

And Pascha. Xposts

Head for ikea for a new one.

UsedToBikeAndRunAndSki · 08/01/2012 18:52

Get a new cot, £40 IKea.

You could "loose" some of the bolts for the old cot (especially very odd shaped ones), then you'll have to. Happened to us (genuinely lost bolts), got "new" old cot from friends.

bochead · 08/01/2012 18:56

New cot - rodent wee contains all sorts of nasties.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 08/01/2012 18:57

Similar for me, but with a moses basket. Got it down from the attic and it was mouldy. Bleached it and it appeared clean, but couldnt get the mouldy image out of my head. Bought a new one a few days ago :)

YANBU, buy a new cot

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 08/01/2012 18:57

Look at it this way. Assuming the bedding etc is all okay, at least you've saved money by not having to buy that new Grin

dinkystinky · 08/01/2012 18:58

New cot

DaenerysTargaryen · 08/01/2012 18:59

new cot :)

TabloidTart · 08/01/2012 19:04

Thanks for the reassurance. So I'm not losing it... DH thinks I'm being totally ridiculous...

I love this board sometimes.

startail · 08/01/2012 19:08

New cot, you'll just feel uncomfortable otherwise.
Good strong ones needn't be expensive. Ours was in the TRus sale. Cost about £60 and survived my two DDs.
Went to a friends for napping, staying over grandchildren and she passed it to a local charity.

sleepevader · 08/01/2012 19:08

I'm really frugal but New cot! Either brand new or quality second hand

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/01/2012 19:10

Try asking on Freecycle - you might get a secondhand one that doesn't smell of animal wee.

RandomMess · 08/01/2012 19:10

New cot, sell your nuts and bolts and metals for the old one on ebay - someone will probably be eternally grateful to be able to get missing bits for theirs!

You could look on ebay/freecycle for a new to you cot that is local - just inspect it first.

KatAndKit · 08/01/2012 19:11

I'd go for new aswell. Even if disinfecting did make it ok, it would still be not right in your head. If money is an issue Ikea make a very cheap cot.

eurochick · 08/01/2012 19:17

New cot. I bet your husband wouldn't like to sleep in a bed that smells of animal wee!

troisgarcons · 08/01/2012 19:18

What are you doing about the animals using your loft as a toilet?

AllYourCakeAreBelongToMe · 08/01/2012 19:20

Definitely a new one. Tell your DH that if it's mouse (or rat) urine, there's a risk of leptospirosis.

ecuse · 08/01/2012 20:02

New cot. We have got the £45 IKEA jobbie and v. pleased with it.

myBOYSareBONKERS · 08/01/2012 20:20

I would get a new cot. If your DD2 got ill how do you know it wasnt due to the cot?? not worth the risk.
