To still put nearly 3.5 yr old to bed at 7 at weekends

Not a big deal really but just interested what the majority of you do. Dh and I work full time, dd in nursery 3.5 days with grandparents for 1.5 days. She has been a great sleeper from months old and is in bed sleeping for 7 each night sleeps til 7/7.30 and after a busy week at nursery/grandparents will still have the occasional nap after lunch at weekend.
I have friends whose kids get to have film night with parents at the weekend and get to stay up a bit later. I know my dd would love this as would we love the extea time with her I feel that this would leave her tired the next day though and don't want to spoil the usual weekend activities soft play, swimming etc. is later bedtime at weekends the norm and we are just being a bit pfb at 3.5.

Thanks everyone feel a lot better that I'm not being too precious about bedtime. Imperial 5pm movie night is a great idea she will like that - thanks.

The thing is, when they get to school age or if they are in childcare, they have to get up in the morning. They need sleep to grow and develop. I don't think small growing people should have to be woken up before they're ready simply because their parents weren't arsed to get them to bed early enough.

Sorry, tangential, but it is a major irk of mine Blush

fit2drop · 07/01/2012 22:25

Fabby if I had kept mine up till that time they would have fallen asleep on the sofa . No way would they stay awake.
They were always ready for bed at 7pm, to the point were they would collect their teddies and take themselves to the bottom of the stairs.
I was not being selfish, it would have been selfish to keep them up when they were so tired.
Oh and I will add that mine went to bed at 7 untill they were at least 7 yrs old.

So bite me!!!

Dozer · 07/01/2012 22:27

Envy at all these 7pm bedtimes!

tanfastic · 07/01/2012 22:27

I must be very selfish as I put my 3.8 year old to bed at 7.15 every night. God forbid I might miss the soaps and have to actually interract with him Hmm

Dozer · 07/01/2012 22:28

My dds are night owls like their dad, the only person ready for sleep at 7pm here is me zzzzzz

Valpollicella · 07/01/2012 22:29

Can I ask a genuine question for those whose DC are in bed at 6.30pm, does that still happen in the summer/lighter hours?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 07/01/2012 22:31

It's 7pm here but yes, it has still happened all year round (ds's 3.4 and 6.3) until now.

Black and blinds and curtains with balck out linings along with all upstairs curtains closed before they go to bed sems to help. Camping trips on the other hand aren't so easy - they're always very tired after that.

BoysBoysBoysAndMe · 07/01/2012 22:32

Val yes ds1 is in bed for 7 come spring, summer, autumn, winter.

He is tired at that time so thats when he goes to bed.

Has a blackout blind, curtains and a routine.

WaitingForMe · 07/01/2012 22:32

3.5yr old DSS in bed by 7.30 every night. 6.5yr old allowed to stay up until 8-8.15 (he decides) but during that time difference is to read or play quietly in his room. It's as much about creating downtime as much as anything else.

And maybe we're selfish but that's when we eat!

Jumpingovaries1 · 07/01/2012 22:32

Love some of the responses to fabbys comment! Valpolicella yes although I put up blackout blind in summer months. Hth

I've had enough of ds by 7pm tbh.

Valpollicella · 07/01/2012 22:33

Aha, yes, blackout blinds...Of course!

I'm not quite sure what failed me there but of course I do know about blackout blinds Maybe time for my own bed Grin

Chubfuddler · 07/01/2012 22:34

Just read fabby's post "can't be arsed to interact and want time for yourself" DING!

skybluepearl · 07/01/2012 22:41

my 3 year old boy is in nbed at 6.15 EVERY night. He couldn't cope otherwise as he gets so exhausted. If he ever has a late night or a disturbed nights sleep, he is so grumpy the next day.

PattiMayor · 07/01/2012 22:45

DS is nearly 5 and goes to bed at 7.30 on Saturday night and 6.45 on school nights. He sleeps 12-13 hours a night and has huge black marks under his eyes if he doesn't get his sleep.

And yes, I have had enough of him by then too Wink

skybluepearl · 07/01/2012 22:46

Fabbychic - I think it would be selfish if I was to keep my boy awake late. He would be so unhappy the next day.

6.15pm and I use black out blinds. Ds wakes at 7am bright and ready for the day.

PiedWagtail · 07/01/2012 22:46

My ds age 4.5 goes to bed at 7 and he really needs it by then! My two have always gone to bed at 7 - you're not depriving your ds of film nights etc - you can have them when he's older and more likely to appreciate them!!!!

Fabby - you are an arse. In what way is it selfish to put children to bed at the time they NEED to go to bed????

PiedWagtail · 07/01/2012 22:49

Oh and also Fabby - I'm a SAHM so I saw my kids plenty during the day and didn't have to keep them up past their bedtime to satisfy myself that I was seing them enough Hmm

devonshiredumpling · 07/01/2012 23:05

my two are 2 and a half and five both are in bed by seven at the latest but they need their sleep and it is selfish to keep them up for my own reasons

pantspantspants · 07/01/2012 23:18

DD1 (4) is a 7 to 7 girl, but DD2 (2.5) is a knackered early riser. Pleased others put to bed earlier than 7 may try it with DD2.

So lovely to see that when you are responding to your child's needs you can still be seen as selfish. Struggling to see how making the children over-tired is a selfless act. Confused

Chynah · 07/01/2012 23:34

both mine (under 3) are in bed at 7. Will send them earlier if they have been to a party or similar and are knackered though.

Raffiiscool · 07/01/2012 23:48

We have a movie night every Saturday night but DDs (5 & 3) don't stay up any later than normal which is about 7.30pm. We start the film at 5/5.30 and they get to eat dinner on their laps as an exception to the norm. They have to be in their PJs before the movie then it is teeth and bed and story(no bath).

They love it as it is a treat (they get a sweetie bowl too Blush) and look forward to it all week. You could do this with your routine if you wanted to - would just need a little tweak and and to drop a few rules (e.g always eating at the table). Mine know it is a special allowance so there is never any problems at other times

Raffiiscool · 07/01/2012 23:49

It is also nice to all cuddle up on the sofa on a Saturday evening!

cece · 08/01/2012 00:01

How do you all get your kids to bed so early Shock

My 2 and half year old went up at 8.15 pm tonight. He did however, fall asleep almost immediately. If I put him up earlier (say 7.30pm) then he is usually awake for about 40 mins before he drops off. He usually wakes anytime from 5.30 through to about 7.30am.

His 8 year old brother has an official bedtime of 8pm. However, he is often still awake past 9pm... He usually gets up about 6am.

As for the 10 year old she is often still awake when I go to bed at 11pm... Her saving grace is that she can now sleep past 9 am if left to her own devices. Smile
