it is about raising awareness and reminding people, not bullying or nagging them into something. if just one extra person decides they could donate blood, stem cells or bone marrow and registers, just through a prompt then it is worth asking.

i give blood and am on the list. if anyone needs a bit of my blood or bone marrow i would give it. my choice.

cece · 07/01/2012 19:03

I tried as my cousin's son needs a bone marrow transplant but as I am over 40 they wouldn't register me. Sad

Littlefish · 07/01/2012 19:08

A good friend has just been matched and is donating very soon. It has spurred me into action and I have just booked an appointment online to go and give blood, having not given blood for about 7 years. I'll register when I go.

I didn't know about Expat's daughter. My thoughts are with them all.

mishtake · 07/01/2012 19:08

Because of my own health problems I can't do it but I have forwarded link to friends and family.

EllenandBump · 07/01/2012 19:40

Says i cant donate blood i checked, cos of the medication i am on and cos i have b12 and folate deficency anemia at the moment. Wish it was more publicised. Will check into it if they manage to get me sorted out but was told ages ago i wouldnt be able to :(

smileyhappymummy · 07/01/2012 20:03

I can't donate blood as I have had a transfusion, but can still donate bone marrow, am really pleased to have been able to do this as I really wanted to give something back.

Fit2Burst · 07/01/2012 20:22

smiley - I had to have a transfusion after I had DS2 does this mean I can't give blood ever again?! Shock I didn't know this affected giving blood.

Peachy · 07/01/2012 20:24

If you don't get on AN Register it doesn't always barr you from NHS one- if you donate blood (obviously many cannot) and are under 49 it's worth mentioning when you next attend.

Yes it's true actually making to donation is a medical procedure but getting on the register is just spitting in a cup; if it gets to medical level then you ahve been matched with someone whose life you might just save or extend. Someone like Aillidh.

SecretMinceRinser · 07/01/2012 20:31

I give blood and have looked into this before. The only thing that puts me off is where it says that if you donate from your hip bone you will be required to stay in hospital for up to 48 hrs and I have absolutely no-one to have the kids for that length of time. Has anyone done this who can say whether its really necessary to stay in that long?

happydotcom · 07/01/2012 20:35

I'm on the list!!

And the national organ donor list.

oldmerryolesoul · 07/01/2012 21:14

himyname.... I believe they dont stick an needle in your bones anymore but use a process called apheresis, where the blood comes out goes into a machine, the relevant bit taken out and then your blood goes back into your arm

Punkatheart · 07/01/2012 21:26

I cannot donate, as I have lymphoma. But I am more than likely to go on the list as a receiver soon. So thank you in advance to anyone who will donate. It changes people's lives.

xx

magicOC · 07/01/2012 21:37

Best wishes to you punk and expats DD. I wish you both well.

I have been on the AN register for years and have gone thru second stage testing as I came up as a possible match for someone. They never got back to me so i'm hoping they found an even closer match.

I agree with the poster who says it's not to be taken lightly as it does take a lot out of you (or so i've read) and you may need a few days off work, but, if I or someone close to me needed a transplant then I would hope there would be someone there for them. So in that case, I think it's only fair that I would be prepared to put myself out for a few days to return the favour, and possibly save a life.

LordFlashheart · 07/01/2012 21:37

They can use apheresis most of the time, but when you sign up you have to accept you might have to have the bone marrow extraction.

devonshiredumpling · 07/01/2012 22:18

too late to ask for me i am already registered with the organ donation and bone marrow people and i give blood

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/01/2012 22:55

Too old soz.

CrystalsandDiamonds · 10/01/2012 00:58

just want to say it is a worth while thing to do. I am internally great full and so is my whole family that my nieces donor was on the register as turned out they were a perfect match, which is really rare with non family members.

Due to that amazing thing to do and we are really thankful to that person signing up, getting tested, and going through with it as thanks to them my niece has a better chance of staying in remission from leukaemia.

So just wanted to say if you are able to do it, are committed to doing it, please do as there are people out there who will be internally greatfull that you gave them a chance and growing up
