He seems to think so.

Apparently all of his friends watch it.

I just feel a bit uncomfortable with it, somehow.

radiohelen
those who have never yet indulged have NO concept of what those actually mean. DH and I watched "Meaning of Life" with the kids on New Years Eve - they did not comprehend and therefore did not get whole chunks of it.
We were watching them V V closely

and yes the coma thing was WOOOOWWW

He's one of the better ones in terms of he addresses stupid prejudices like homophobia, racism etc and laughs at them rather than using them to get a joke. But he's not so hot on sexism - I mean, he addresses it on a basic level but then as you say goes on to joke about, e.g. "surprise sex" ie rape, which is always offensive and never funny. But having seen him live and one particular joke about the differences between drunk horny men and drunk horny women (drunk horny women are predators, drunk horny men fall asleep, apparently) I think that he is just so far removed from how some men think, that "surprise sex" is an acceptable thing to joke about because it would never cross his mind that anyone would think it was an acceptable thing to do. (Or that it was rape, most likely, because rape happens in dark alleys by strangers Wink)

Russell Howard is a wanker - how his mother hasn't given him such a slap in the chops by now I do not know. The poor woman must be afraid to show her face in public after all the nasty things he says about her. Either that or none of her friends have televisions! All he does is poke fun at her and say snotty/mean/vulgar things about her, and seems to think it's funny Confused

southeastastra · 07/01/2012 00:15

i do find the constant references to sex a bit weird but generally like his show

TroublesomeEx · 07/01/2012 08:26

DS is 13. He's just started watching Red Dwarf. Tbh, I find some of that a bit too near the knuckle in places and it's got nothing on Russell Howard!! Grin

ByTheSea · 07/01/2012 11:10

I've never noticed Russell Howard poking fun at his family. He seems lovely to me. Are you thinking of the wanker Russell Kane?

TrinityRhino · 07/01/2012 11:15

russel howard is my dd1s (11) first man crush

she thinks he gorgeous and funny

she watched it in her bedroom but tells me about it all the time

gushes over him lol

tbh I would rather her first silly crush was Russell howard rather than jls or some other 'band'

I feel the same way TrinityRhino. I like that DD likes funny, liberal-minded comedians.

mrsjay · 07/01/2012 13:56

ooo we had this conversation recently dd1 loves RH she is 18 she records it , anyhoo dd2 13 was watching i was like Shock at his language and some of his jokes he never used to be so well erm sweary did he ? i have stopped dd from watching , I do like him though i dont think yabu to not let a 12 yr old watch , ad to hang what everybody elses does/watches ,

Peachy · 07/01/2012 14:05

RH is fine for ds1 (12) I think; he has a generally benevolent edge to things and the 'Good News' but at the end is very worthwhile.

I'd much rather ds1 learned things from me and my chosen media than schoolyard bullshit. That's an approach that I have taken since early on and emant that my non-precocious children knew more about sex in the lessons this year than their comrades who like to yell obvnoxious homephobic sexist crap, and that DS2 has taken a stand on the use of 'spaz' at school this week; ds1 did similar last eyar before comp. They are also politically informed, and at 12 and in yr7 ds1 is class rep for his Base (a specilaist ASD class in a large comp covering ages 11 - 18)- I am crap in many way but think it's payiong off in this aspect.

ForkInTheForeheid · 07/01/2012 15:24

yanbu. In fact anyone who genuinely enjoys Russell Howard is BU. He's got his occasional moments but I think he's fairly old-fashioned in his comedy subject matter and a bit tasteless. (I can't find it on youtube but making jokes about being blind was one of his low points on mock the week - at least frankie boyle is out and out deliberately offensive and knows what he's doing).

Asinine · 07/01/2012 15:30

My 13 year old loves satirical comedy, I don't mind as long as it is intelligent humour. I'd rather she watched comic strip presents, comedy road show, have I got news for you blackadder etc than american teen crap, eastenders or celebrity realityshitfests...

G1nger · 07/01/2012 17:22

Don't let him watch the blonde cutie pie that is Russell Howard. Your son should be in bed so you can get cracking on wine :)

notveryinventive · 07/01/2012 17:32

Reading this thread suggests that RH was on last night?????? Have I missed something new or was it a repeat?

FlangelinaBallerina · 07/01/2012 18:43

You're being a bit over-protective OP. Russell Howard is rather tame and at 12, DS is old enough to know how sex works. If he doesn't know about anal sex and orgasms, he will soon enough. Especially orgasms, unless he's a very unusual sort of teenage boy.

Its up to you what you want to allow, obviously, but I'd think quite carefully about making it forbidden fruit. It doesn't make you unreasonable to want to shield precious DC from everything and keep them innocent, not at all- natural reaction for a parent. But not necessarily either sensible or realistic.

treas · 07/01/2012 18:58

Plant him in front of Michael McIntyre instead - he'd luuvve that!Grin

cadelaide · 07/01/2012 23:39

Just as an aside, how old are you people who think he's great?

I really do find him desperately irritating.

Predictable.

And that imbecilic smile.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 07/01/2012 23:42

Dd1 adores him, she is 14. There is no danger of me watching it with her, as i think it/he is crap.

scummymummy · 07/01/2012 23:42

Russell Howard? Isn't he the blond one off mock the week who isn't very funny and looks about 12 himself? Has he got rude in his old age?

G1nger · 08/01/2012 10:07

"Just as an aside, how old are you people who think he's great?"

Not great, but funny enough. 32.

ByTheSea · 08/01/2012 11:18

I'm 48. He's not my favourite, but I think he's cute and funny.

notveryinventive · 08/01/2012 16:48

Im 33 and think he's rather funny,

Peachy · 09/01/2012 09:33

I like him loads- but I recognise I particularly like his West Country style as I am from that area as well.

Peachy · 09/01/2012 09:33

Oh, 38.
