AIBU to think that Cameron is telling nurses to do things that they already do?

David Cameron's 'ideas'
Hourly checks on patients to make sure they have had enought to eat/drink and are comefortable.
Isn't this just basic care?
Also to have members of the public doing spot checks on their local hospitals, isn't this just going a bit too far?

I would really like him to do a 12 hour shift on a busy ward, with sick people needing more than just the hourly walk around to make sure that things are ok.
What about the patients who are in need of 15 minute observations. Patients with poor mobility who take more than 30 seconds to get to the toilet and needs assistance every step of the way. What about the drug rounds? Then multiply that by 30 pateints for 2 staff nurses (some with little experiance) If 1 patient is really ill thats 1 nurse down so 30 patients beeing looked after by 1 nurse, and maybe 1 or 2 HCA.

Why does he not discuss the staffing issues, which most wards have the mountains of paper work which each and every nurse has to get through every shift which takes away from the care of patients.
Most nurses I know stay behind to finish paperwork, turn into work when they or their family is not well, go without breaks, work 12hours a shift, do extra shifts and Given up our measily 3% payrise over 3 years.

He's just making a lot of noise saying we should do things we already do in order that the public think we're not doing them and we lose support?

Grin @ BadDay

We have a relative who turns up each afternoon and demands that his mum is taken to the loo. He makes sure it's at the same time as the HCA's breaktime. If you ask her if she wants the loo she'll say "no", but she still has to be taken because her son threatens us if we don't Hmm I tried taking her before he came in, but he then started coming in earlier just to prevent this happening. He's determined that the HCAs shouldn't have their break and goes over and glares at them if he catches them sitting down with their cuppas.

SauvignonBlanche · 06/01/2012 23:31

I don't let staff out onto the ward unless they are complying with the uniform policy.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 06/01/2012 23:32

good! wish there were more like you! I wish more had the guts to pull people up on it if they are being crap in the NHS.

hiddenhome · 06/01/2012 23:33

Reduce that can be said of all areas on society Hmm Dress and hair standards are lousy everywhere. It's part of our culture now. Nurses are hardly going to turn up in 1950s style uniforms because they're not provided with attire like that.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 06/01/2012 23:34

no it's not hiddenhome, I've worked in the private sector too (not healthcare) and you would not be kept on if you turned up looking like you couldn't care less

SauvignonBlanche · 06/01/2012 23:35

Sorry hidden that brings up two issues; why do all the HCAs go on break together and why can't the nurses take people to the toilet?

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 06/01/2012 23:35

As for shiney Dave (the bastard) he systematically bashing all sections of society in turn, you know, the good ones that keep the country going and turning society against each other so they can get away with all their cuts. Its so obvious. (the bastard)

SauvignonBlanche · 06/01/2012 23:36

It's not 'guts' it's my job to do that.

hiddenhome · 06/01/2012 23:37

Have you seen the current nurses' uniforms? They're hardly conducive to a sense of pride. Most of them look awful. A great many nurses work in such a demoralising environment that appearance is the last thing they're probably bothered about. Do you know how it feels to be forced to neglect sick and helpless people by your employers? It's extremely distressing to go off duty crying because you're all too aware that you've let people down.

hiddenhome · 06/01/2012 23:39

They go on break together because the time can't be spared for them to go in two lots. Time is so tight that only about 20 minutes can be spared before the next mealtime occurs. We just have too much to do and over 30 residents to care for.

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 06/01/2012 23:40

I start off a shift looking clean with hair brushed but after several hours in 30 degree heat and caring for 5 labourers I don't finish a shift looking very well kept I'm afraid.

hiddenhome · 06/01/2012 23:40

There's only one nurse on at a time and this lady takes two people because she needs hoisting and frequent positional adjustment due to balance difficulties.

boglach · 06/01/2012 23:41

People like to project their own anger and issues onto nurses

i worked with patients and relatives who were angry no matter what you did. sometimes it is their own guilt driving their anger, sometimes the image you represent i.e care, vocation, doing a worthwhile job that isn't about money - well it can psychologically stir people

and the media love to stir the public

ReduceRecycleRegift · 06/01/2012 23:41

yes hidden home I have a nice selection of the beauties.
And I don't have as many per trust as I should have.

I know how demoralising it is. But if you don't even START the shift with your best foot forward what kind of vibe will you be giving to the patients? Sad

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 06/01/2012 23:41

And yes hiddenhome its shit going home when you know you been unable to give any good care.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 06/01/2012 23:44

"I start off a shift looking clean with hair brushed "

that's not what I'm talking about, I look pretty shocking by the end too. I'm talking about the people who come in in dirty, scruffy tunics, random non uniform trousers, scruffy shoes and dirty un-kept hair... and that's okay they just keep doing it. If they can't be arsed to even turn up properly then how much of a shit are they going to give about the rest of the job Sad

There are not THAT many jobs where that is accepted

ReduceRecycleRegift · 06/01/2012 23:46

(yes I have non issued trousers too, I know you HAVE to if you intend to have a clean uniform for each shift and do long days because you don't get given enough, but mine look exactly like the real thing)

hiddenhome · 06/01/2012 23:48

I buy mine from Matalan Sad It's all I can afford and they're black, so don't match my tunic. Work don't provide uniform either.

So, sack me Hmm

RoyalWelsh · 06/01/2012 23:49

I class myself as very uneducated in terms of politics but it does strike me that he has been quite clever here. The country, if not the world is falling apart and to try and stop people noticing that he is allowing cuts and changes that are going to devastate people, he does his best to turn us against each other. Last year it was teachers, now it's nurses. I'm not saying the system doesn't need to change - clearly it does, but he isn't saying that. He isn't saying that the whole NHS needs reforming, he is saying that nurses are shit. He is an utter cunting ball bag. He stands there and bangs on about nurses being rubbish and teachers having too much money, but (to my knowledge) he hasn't made a big noise about the changes he's making to the CSA has he? The changes that will mean single parents are charged an upfront fee for the privilege of asking them to chase the other paren who doesn't pay maintenance.

The man and this government are pure filth. I didn't even realise I felt this strongly until I clicked on this thread, not even when I read the shockingly similar ones involving teachers.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 06/01/2012 23:49

bon marche have very cheap dark navy ones with sewn in pleat that go in toward the ankle like most hospital issue ones Wink

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 06/01/2012 23:50

You wouldn't get that in maternity

Thereistoomuchconfusion · 06/01/2012 23:50

I wear asda smart price £6 navy trousers under my uniform because I'm only allowed one pair of trousers!! And I refuse to wear ones I have already worn without washing them. Although clean hair is a must and good hygiene although not really sure how this reflects on how someone will care for you.

SauvignonBlanche · 06/01/2012 23:52

Full time staff get 5 uniforms at my trust which people find to be plenty.

boglach · 06/01/2012 23:52

Here here royalwelsh

BadDayAtTheOrifice · 06/01/2012 23:52

And theres no fucking way on this Earth you'll get me into a Bon Marche!
