to think that people with facial tattoos are bound to regret it one day?

Young girl in Tesco, had what looked like a treble clef tattooed on her temple and the side of her forehead.

Call me a judgmental wanker, but surely it makes no sense to have your face tattooed?

dumdedo+dah agreed. I think it takes a talented artist to have the privilage of inking someone's face.

sheepgomeep · 03/01/2012 20:50

Ive got tattoos on my wrists and I will be getting more at some point. I have vitiligo and big patches of white skin all over my body which I hate. I have tattoos on my wrists because it covers up my white skin and I can look at them and smile. I have another darker reason why the tattoos are there.

I couldnt have them on my face though, back of neck or behind my ear yes, face no. I love them and I will never regret them

JustHecate · 03/01/2012 21:13

rightly or wrongly, if you have lots of tattoos you seriously limit your job prospects. People should certainly be made to consider that before having them done. People are narrow minded about tattoos. It's a fact. It shouldn't be so, but it's the reality.

Bunfight starting question here Grin - should people who choose to have facial tattoos, knowing that it will make getting a job next to impossible - be denied benefits on the grounds that they have chosen to do something that they know will mean they will likely remain unemployed and have therefore rendered themselves unemployable by their own actions?

This has come up in conversation and I had no clue what to say in reply to that and muttered something unintelligible about prejudice Grin

I personally hate any tatoos - although I have pretended to admire friends ones. I think they all look cheap and common. Of course it is entirely up to people what they do with their own bodies. But having visible tattoos will limit you to certain types of jobs/industries.

Zombi · 03/01/2012 21:43

Justhecate there are various shops, pubs, bars, call centres and offices that (at least around here) where there are people with various tattoos, piercings and hair colours ranging from blue to bright orange. It's just not that taboo.

I don't doubt that there are employers who might have discriminating views them but I would actively discourage anyone from pandering to them. People are individuals with lives outside work and employers should, and do, accept that. We work to live. Not the other way around.

Pinot · 03/01/2012 21:46

Hate tattoos.

HTH.

EllenandBump · 03/01/2012 21:46

I DONT regret the tattoo on my shoulder, but do regret having my exh's name in it and will be getting that part of it removed!

Zombi · 03/01/2012 21:48

My husband's just said that your boss could have his nipples and good bits pierced and go to S+M parties every weekend but you wouldn't know because he goes to work in a suit, in the same way that another person at worl with pink hair and a nose ring could be a church-going virgin with a stamp collection.

I think his basic point is that preconceptions are a bit daft.

KatieScarlett2833 · 03/01/2012 21:54

Hate them all, even if Leonardo was doing the tattooing.

Chynah · 03/01/2012 22:03

I have 2 small and in places most people will never see. They are 20 ish years old now and no regrets.

Would never have one in a place of permanent display though.

Seabright · 03/01/2012 22:05

The big ear-hole things (do they have a proper name?) make me feel very strange, almost quesy.

I can't look at someone with them and dread having to do so. I suppose it's because I can imagine the skin being pulled, like a chinese burn.

Tattoos - not for me. A couple of friends have them in pretty covered up places. I'm not sure if I would employ someone with visible tattoos. I think they would need to be pretty small tattoos and it would have to be a pretty talented person. I'm really not sure, as I haven't (yet) been faced with the issue

Zombi · 03/01/2012 22:07

seabright they are caLled sleepers.

mybootsaremuddy · 03/01/2012 22:16

My father has facial tattoo (or 'Ta Moko' as it is know in our culture). It is a cultural thing though and has deep and meaningful roots. See explanation here
In maori culture the head is considerd to be the most 'Tapu'(sacred) part of the body.

mybootsaremuddy · 03/01/2012 22:19

Warning the video at bottom of link may be a bit shock and yuk for some viewersGrin

mybootsaremuddy · 03/01/2012 22:20

Not sure why myShock came out as a link there Confused

MothersMaidenName · 03/01/2012 22:36

I bloody love MN because I learn something new every day.

I am so pleased GetOrf that you told us about the stretchy ears shrinking back because I was concerned we may have a future generation of pensioners with loopy ears.

I still imagine those earrings whistling in the wind though Grin

I was also interested to learn about gangs/criminals with certain tattoos on their faces. I would have thought anybody involved in a life of crime would not want any obvious identifying marks on their face.

Zombi · 03/01/2012 22:37

mybootsaremuddy GREAT links!

lesley33 · 03/01/2012 22:49

I think there is a prejudice that tattoos are largely lower class. So I could quite imagine dominos for example employing someone with a visible tattoo. But I can't imagine a non criminal solicitors practice employing someone with a visible tattoo. Lots of us wear clothes for example to present an image at work, that does not reflect our life outside work. But a visible tattoo means you can only ever do this to a limited degree.

Ripeberry · 03/01/2012 22:49

Tongue piercing is the most stupid thing of all. It also damages your teeth. Shudder!

YourCallIsImportant · 03/01/2012 22:53

This is an <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=tattoo+location+chart&hl=en&sa=X&biw=1093&bih=538&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=rJrI3R-_mmHgmM:&imgrefurl=thetempotandrum.com/post/2862586613/tattoo-locations-chart&docid=FrebMvHrKG9VAM&imgurl=28.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lf4ztmYgRg1qg9s54o1_500.jpg&w=500&h=506&ei=TIYDT5WPLM3x8QPig_yzAQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=422&vpy=154&dur=114&hovh=226&hovw=223&tx=104&ty=116&sig=116205836620337723850&page=1&tbnh=177&tbnw=175&start=0&ndsp=11&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">interesting body map that links tattoo locations to lifestyles Grin

It should really be displayed in poster size in all tattoo shops to assist the hard of thinking.

GreenEyesAndNiceHam · 03/01/2012 23:07

Each to their own for sure- I personally dislike tattoos, but I happened to fall in love with a heavily tattooed man (which was weird). My husbands tattoos are now just a part of who he is, to me. But I would still say that I don't like 'them'.

I have a peculiar reaction when I see facial tattoos though, like a strange, unsettling tummy lurch

sheepgomeep · 03/01/2012 23:22

yourcallisimportant..slightly prejudiced no? (and innacurate)
