Over ''Check-Ins?''

(Popping AIBU cherry!)

It really bothers me when people come to my home and ''Check in'' on FB or Foursquare. It's like they're oblivious to the fact that sites or apps with this feature publically map your location for all to see?!

There is absolutely NO way to prevent anyone checking in at your home and thus showing everyone on their list where you live because no tagging at all is required.

I'm also often bemused by people who check in to their own house on FB, particularly if they have people on their list who wouldn't normally know where they live.

Friends have told me to ''Chillax'' (yes, one friend actually said that.) But am I not entitled to a say in who knows my address and shouldn't people be a bit more careful in displaying their OWN address? There are folks on my FB that I don't know IRL (group friends etc) who have displayed their address to me this way!

Are people just not thinking or AIBU

I dont really get this checking in lark...I mean, who gives a flying fuck if am having a bath (sersiously, people check in in the bath, in bed etc).

However, surely if fb dont have your address then people cant check in there?? Or am I being a bit dense??

KatAndKit · 03/01/2012 15:12

yes, how does this work? I would not be happy if FB was publishing my location to everyone, I don't have my address on there for a good reason. Does it work with gps or something?

ViviPru · 03/01/2012 15:12

So if your friends check in when they're at yours, and it says "such-and-such is at 25 Somewhere Street, This Place" how does that connect it to you?

TheSpreadingChestnutTree · 03/01/2012 15:15

I'm obviously too old for this, I don't even know what foursquare is, and I don't understand this drive to publicise every tiny boring detail of your life via facebook. Yanbu.

ruddynorah · 03/01/2012 15:17

Their friend might annotate their check in with 'coffee at ruddynorah's house' etc.

AbsofCroissant · 03/01/2012 15:18

YANBU. I mean, aren't people concerned about everyone knowing what you're doing every second of the day? What if you have a stalker? What if you're lax about your security settings? It's a burglar's DREAM. They wait til you've checked in somewhere which isn't your home, they can get your address, and then Bob's your uncle.

Zombi · 03/01/2012 15:18

viv if someone is at your house then they can create a new check in, name it as your house and when they check in it comes up as ''zombies house'' and all you need do is click on the check in to view it on a map.

OTheHugeManatee · 03/01/2012 15:19

OP, send them a link to Please Rob Me Grin

EduStudent · 03/01/2012 15:19

YANBU. Rude and inconsiderate.

Vivi When you check in, you can choose to name the location. So the friend might call it Zombi's House, which then when you click on it will take you to a map of exactly where it is.

ViviPru · 03/01/2012 15:20

YANBU in as much as these locator things are just silly.

I couldn't give a fig though if anyone finds out where I live in this way even my toxic brother who I don't believe has my address I just don't care

Birdsgottafly · 03/01/2012 15:21

They don't map your exact location, unless you are in a detached house with no near neighbours, for all to see. Well not on fb, they don't. The police can find out what computer that you are logged omn from, but again it takes alot of information sharing, first.

Unless you mean to announce that their own home is empty.

Are you particulary paroniod or are you fleeing someone?

Yes that's what I thought, Edu & OP . Its just silly isn't it. People pissing about on social network sites while they're visiting would irk me more though.

Peachy · 03/01/2012 15:23

YANBU

Dh checked in at poundland yesterday. I mean FFS!

usualsuspect · 03/01/2012 15:23

Because the burglers would know that no one else was in wouldn't they Confused

Birdsgottafly · 03/01/2012 15:25

Oh i see, they are deliberatly doing this. Then YANBU, it is up to you what goes on in your house, they should respect your wishes.

ViviPru · 03/01/2012 15:25

But if people are checking it at your house, the burglars (mental image of swag bags and arrowed jumpsuit) would give your pad a swerve as its full of people pissing about on facebook Confused

ViviPru · 03/01/2012 15:25

checking in*

Zombi · 03/01/2012 15:26

birds Fleeing someone? No. I'd just prefer my address (and these maps do give exact street names and pinpoint where in the street the house is) to be given only when I decide. There's no other motive.

ohthehugemantitee great link :)

KarenJones · 03/01/2012 15:27

I thought that, usual.

Surely even if someone can see you aren't at your house, they can't tell nobody else is home.

Can they?!

usualsuspect · 03/01/2012 15:29

Maybe the fb burglars have special powers

KatAndKit · 03/01/2012 15:30

Why do these people think others give such a flying fuck about their precise location? I don't need to know the exact gps location of my facebook friends. It seems like a stupid and pointless facility.

EduStudent · 03/01/2012 15:32

It's not just burglars though, it's more the rudeness of not checking with the OP that it was okay to check in and name it as her house. She may have other reasons that she doesn't want her location announced, permanently, to all and sundry.

Unfortunately for me, I have an unusualish name and so one look on Google will give you a pretty good idea of who I am, what I look like, a quote in the paper from me about 10 years ago, my GCSE results, Facebook groups I've been a member of, both my current home addresses, my age, the names of my family and housemates Confused Terrifying prospect, should I ever want to disappear from someone. Obviously now do everything I can to keep available info to a minimum, but too late for the stuff already up there.

ViviPru · 03/01/2012 15:33

ok apparently...

"So, why use Facebook Places? Aside from the curiosity factor, it has other advantages. You can see which of your friends are nearby and arrange an unexpected get-together. You can stay current on events -- if, based on their check-ins, your local Facebook friends are going to a concert, you can join them. There are also consumer benefits. If your co-worker checks in at Macy's for a huge sale, you can join her to cash in on the savings.

However, a note of caution: By letting people know you've checked in at the movies, for example, you're also advertising your home is empty and for how long. Check-in services may enable cyberstalking (or even the real kind). And businesses can capitalize on your info via check-ins, spamming you with unwanted special offers. So, know the potential and check in wisely."

OooohhhhKaaaaay Hmm

Zombi · 03/01/2012 15:35

kit agreed.

Peachy bwahahahaaa @ Poundland check in!
