So my DD is watching 'the mask' with Jim Carrey. She loves it and thinks its hilarious. She loves to say 'smoking' and 'p.a.r.t - why?" :D

But my friend reckons its an inappropriate film because it has guns and blood Hmm

What do you all think? DD is almost 4.

You are her mum, its your decision to make. She is hardly going to go and grab a real gun and shoot someone, and from what I remember it isnt a gory film.

mrsjay · 02/01/2012 18:50

Its up to you if she watches it or not i think the mask is more slapstick than blood and guts and TBh its a kids film anyway , let her watch it she obviously enjoys it ,

Our 3 and 4 year old love it. YANBU

zoe88 · 02/01/2012 18:51

My 4 year old loves it!!

Iscreamtea · 02/01/2012 18:52

My dd watched it at a similar age. It's very cartoony and a PG so nothing too nasty in it. 5 yrs on and she's yet to turn into a violent homicidal maniac Grin.

Dee03 · 02/01/2012 18:52

I cannot stand that film but then I don't like Jim Carey.... Your child, your choice Smile

PurplePidjInAPearTree · 02/01/2012 18:54

I left a few films out when 4 yo dnephew came to stsy the first time, all stuff I thought would be suitable.

He ignored Cars and Monsters vs Aliens and watched obsessively Karate Kid, Ghostbusters and Avatar. Luckily dsil doesn't mind as his favourite film at home is Narnia Hmm

redrosette · 02/01/2012 18:58

I dont consider the mask violent at all, more funny and cartoony than violent.

hence why I'm confused by my friend

YABU because that man is an arse and his films are crap Xmas Grin

mrsjay · 02/01/2012 19:10

there is no blood and guts in the mask as far as i can remember ,

Zombi · 02/01/2012 19:11

Typo. They're 3 and 5.

birdsofshore you'rwe assuming that children don't know the difference between films and reality and that they cannot put what they're seeing into context. I have to disagree.

redrosette · 02/01/2012 19:11

She tells people not to worry, its not real.

But you're right, you've caught me out. I'm really hoping that she will think death and violence is FUNNY...

redrosette · 02/01/2012 19:12

Thanks Zombi, my DD knows its not real and says so.

and yes, I dont recall any blood in the mask.

GoingForGoalWeight · 02/01/2012 19:12

I've not seen the Mask.

Liar Liar is an OK film but other Jim Carrey films are shyte.

Pet Detective - uber shyte.

YANBU

Your choice OP.

CatPussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 02/01/2012 19:13

We watched Bolt yesterday. It has guns and blood and mortal peril! Id let a 3 year old watch that....

mrsjay · 02/01/2012 19:16

chldrens classic bambi had a mother deer being shot and is violent , I dont see the difference TBH , Alot of U n PG kids films have the disclaimer mild peril on them now its quite funny ,

ILoveSanta · 02/01/2012 19:20

I still watch watership down through my fingers, and I am pretty sure it's a U.

YANBU, your decision as the mother and I personally would think it is okay.

redrosette · 02/01/2012 19:20

DD watched Bambi and was more upset by that than by the Mask or even Transformers!

She was also upset by Dumbo, when Dumbo's mum is locked up.

redrosette · 02/01/2012 19:25

my friend wraps her dd who's 6 in cotton wool but I have never ever said to her or questioned her choices, like the fact her DD is still in nappies (no health problems).

She, however, frequently questions mine. I've been distancing myself from her, she's more of a facebook only friend now.

Zombi · 02/01/2012 19:30

birdsofshore we're going to have to agree to disagree about children's perceptions. While I'm sure that there are some kids who can't tell the difference between fact and faction I'm sure that the OP knows HER child well enough to know that she does.

You're putting the wrong spin on it. The tone of the mask is one of comedy and this is more than apparent. There is no subtext that violence in itself is funny. You are being too literal.
