to let 3 year old DD watch 'the mask'?

So my DD is watching 'the mask' with Jim Carrey. She loves it and thinks its hilarious. She loves to say 'smoking' and 'p.a.r.t - why?" :D

But my friend reckons its an inappropriate film because it has guns and blood Hmm

What do you all think? DD is almost 4.

I don't think I'd choose the Mask for a three year old. It's a film I really like and we thought that our two would enjoy it a few years back. Sadly they were totally freaked by the scene where Jim Carey puts the mask on in his flat and refused to watch any more. Plus had nightmares. I think they were perhaps 5 an 6 or so, maybe older. It does have some fairly nasty scenes, although they are cartoony and funny with it.

To be honest the nightmare thing is what I tend to use as my judgy line with movies etc, as it's always me being woken up and I'm not great with broken nights. Last night dd (1) had nightmares from watching James Bond. I was not happy!

I understand the nightmare thing, but we tend to talk to DD throughout the films and explain what is happening and why, so she doesn't get scared.

She has recently also watched ET and Roger Rabbit with no worries. Again we explained everything to her and watched it together as a family. If she got upset or scared, we would switch over.

I'm really surprised anyone could see 'the mask' as violent, hence why I posted this, no one had ever said anything like that to me before and I was like LOL at first.

OP i am more worried about the fact the DD's school isn't addressing her wearing nappies, or you, in fact.

The violence in the Mask isn't graphic, is in context, it would be suitable for some 4 year olds to watch.

Pandemoniaa · 02/01/2012 20:21

I'm inclined to think that only 3 year olds are likely to appreciate Jim Carey anyway. Much older and you realise what utter shyte every film he appears in is.

This is my particular bug bear. The certificates are there for a reason. YABU. There's a lot of dark horror in the Mask IIRC. And she's only 3, I'm sure it was a 12 wasn't it?

Zombi · 02/01/2012 20:25

birdsgottafly the nappy thing was OP's friend's DD
