To wish that people would read the bloomin' thread

before they jump in with both feet?

I know some threads move fast and there are often cross-posts.

But it is infuriating how often people miss the point of the original post, let alone subsequent ones because they haven't read the thread at all properly, so then the OP or others have to patiently reiterate their points all over again.

Just take a minute, and then your harsh criticism words of wisdom would actually be relevant to the points raised.

Sparklingbrook · 02/01/2012 13:48

Some of the threads are sooooooo long though. But I know what you mean. Grin

tethersend · 02/01/2012 13:49

Haven't read the whole thread, but YANBU

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2012 13:49

Same as SB I'll read the OPs posts (also purple here too), but not necessarily every post

LadyBeagleEyes · 02/01/2012 13:56

I agree OP.
Ok they can get very long but you can skim read, especially if the original posts are coloured.
I hate when they say 'Well I haven't read the whole thread but... and then miss the entire point.

OriginalJamie · 02/01/2012 13:58

it makes you look a bit of a twerp if you do that

Trills · 02/01/2012 14:03

Depends. Y may or may not B U

Sometimes it's fun on a trivial thread to reply to just the title as it stands and not even the whole OP.

If it's something serious then you should at least read all the posts by the OP (highlighting is good for this) but I don't think there's any need to read all posts by everyone else.

If someone is asking for an opinion then there are times when your opinion may be more valuable if you have not read what everyone else thinks and have only read what the OP has written.

whogivesastuff · 02/01/2012 14:12

cba to read 154 posts of wimmin alternately wringing their hands about the bastard and telling the OP what a victim she is LOL

checklist is:

read a book
you are being abused/controlled/gaslighted
leave the bastard
he/you/they have mental health issues (usually diagnosed on MN)
its always his fault
leave the bastard
he/she/they are toxic
someone is being passive aggressive
leave the bastard

LOL

xyfactor · 02/01/2012 14:14

Did you mention "Leave the bastard" already :)

baubleybobbityhat · 02/01/2012 14:15

Yanbu. If a thread is really long and I'm not that interested after reading the op then I'll just leave it. Its not likely that I'll have anything original or of mega importance to say.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2012 14:18

I don't think it's necessary to read all the posts...just the highlighted ones by the OP.

Anyway, too many threads get taken off topic especially when a group of posters appear who all seem to know each other well, and there's a couple of pages of chit chat in the middle.

I have mine set so there are no pages...just one big thread. It makes it easier to scroll past the chat and if a thread gets deleted while I'm reading, I can still read it to the end.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 02/01/2012 14:23

YANBU!

I started a thread which, because I spent far too long planning it am a superhuman miracle of precision, contained all the crucial information in the title.

I still got about 2/3 of responses saying 'well, YABU because [response that demonstrates I have either not read your title, or do not know what all the words in it mean ... which was, incidentally, the point of said title]. The other 1/3 were mostly variations on 'read the fucking thread'.

It was a merry time.

Animation · 02/01/2012 14:24

"Leave the bastard!"

I agree.

scottishmummy · 02/01/2012 14:35

well it's discursive medium threads take twists, turns and digress
as for harsh criticism, well you know it depends, for some it means don't state the bleeding obvious or say yabu or disagree with op.

to read 19+ pages takes more than a minute, tbh get gist read op, and contribute.if you want to read every word, reflect and thoughtfully and painstakingly compose reply good on ya. result will be maybe 3 mn posts a day to allow adequate processing, oh and time to practise pointless strikethrough read all posts and

TroublesomeEx · 02/01/2012 14:37

I get annoyed when

people deliberately misunderstand what someone, OP or otherwise, has said and picks on one phrase they then take out of context and use that to beat the poster over the head with;

people don't get an ironic comment and take it at face value when it's clearly the poster being a bit Hmm;

people fix on something that they recognise from their own life and rather than responding to it in the context of the OP/post, reacts completely as though someone is passing judgement on them personally.

I do try and remind myself that not everyone on here has a genius level IQ and that there may be occasions when someone genuinely doesn't pick up on the subtleties of a post or does miss the point that is being made or whatever, but I often think it's done deliberately.

Oh yeah, and when it goes all off topic in the middle by chit chat as Worra said, and then you feel like a bit of a boring old fuddy duddy for bringing it back round to the original topic!

TroublesomeEx · 02/01/2012 14:38

I think my complaints also come under "read the bloomin' thread"! Xmas Grin

Laquitar · 02/01/2012 14:56

So FolkGirl you think that we ALL have low IQ, don't you? That's what you have said. Right. Listen everybody, FolkGirl has just insulted us all.

Grin
Nanny0gg · 02/01/2012 15:40

I quite agree that threads 'take twists, turns and digress' Scottishmummy. Don't have a problem with that at all.

It is the non-addressing/complete disregard of the issues in the OP that I have a problem with - which I am sure you understood from your detailed reading of my post.

And I quite like the pointless strikethrough and the use of brackets too, so I shall continue to use them willy-nilly whenever the fancy takes me.
Smile

baubleybobbityhat · 02/01/2012 15:45

Oh I'm having a boring afternoon and I'd love to re-read that thread LRD. Any chance you could link it?

Trills · 02/01/2012 15:48

I also want to see LRD's thread where people didn't know what the words in the title meant...

ThePathanKhansWitch · 02/01/2012 15:50

I always start with ones where the OP is upset/pissed off whatever and skip to the last page where the subject matter has gone off on a tangent. Usually everyones now talking about zombies.

I'm the worst in the world for it. Sorry.
