to take a bottle of Prosecco to a family meal?

We're doing Christmas Part Three with my Dad, Stepmum and Granny tomorrow. DH and I thought, at the last minute today, that we should probably take a bottle of something tomorrow, but we don't have anything other than the Prosecco to take. Neither of us has a car so there's not really the option of nipping to a shop to get something different in the morning before they collect us all to go over there.

So AIBU (and totally naff/cheap) to take the bottle of fizz, or should I forget about having a shower before I go out tomorrow and walk to the shop to buy something better?

MeeeeeGrin

MaryAnnSingleton · 01/01/2012 23:02

Prosecco is bloody nice and acceptable in my book.

MaryAnnSingleton · 01/01/2012 23:03

it would be a bit naff to take Asti spumante

SmethwickBelle · 01/01/2012 23:04

Prosecco is certainly fancy enough to take as a gift, I've given it myself for the last six or seven years on occasion, I've also given Nyetimber which is an english fizz. Champagne as a gift lacks imagination I think.

DancesWithWolves · 01/01/2012 23:04

I like Prosecco. Much prefer it to champagne, it doesn't give me heartburn.

And I know Xmas Wink

Nanny
no, I have no connection with Nottinghamshire
Lancashire and Paris lass

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 01/01/2012 23:08

Ooh I love Paris .

Greythorne · 01/01/2012 23:09

It's alright. But I miss Branston pickle and horseradish sauce.

Pandemoniaa · 02/01/2012 00:27

I only recently discovered Prosecco. When I went to dinner with vair particular friends whose food and drink is legendary so far as quality is concerned. They served it as an aperitif and it went down extremely well so it is certainly not a naff offering. My very kind ddil gave me a bottle as one of my Christmas presents and iI am currently hoarding looking after carefully.

So take the Prosecco. Whatever you do, don't waste the Moet.

wonkylegs · 02/01/2012 00:31

I deliberately chose it as our fizz of choice here this year and it has gone down very well with everybody ( and believe me we have relatives that would comment re quality Inc DH)

WilsonFrickett · 02/01/2012 00:33

Moët is minging, it's the Jacob's Creek of champagne. Take the prosecco. Chin chin.

CuriousMama · 02/01/2012 00:38

Agree prosecco is lovely. It's the choice of fizz chezMama.

startail · 02/01/2012 00:39

You can send it here, my south African fizz last night was a bit dull. I'd be quite happy to try something else.
Have had really nice Australian bubbly in the past that was defiantly nicer than cheap champagne. Couldn't find any this year.

AliBellandthe40jingles · 02/01/2012 00:41

Prosecco is miles better than Moët, which is a bit naff IMO.

I would be delighted if guests brought it here.

TroublesomeEx · 02/01/2012 07:07

I love Prosecco.

We have a bottle of Moet we were given when we married that is waiting for a 'special occasion'.

Would still prefer prosecco though tbh! Don't like the taste of Moet at all.

ThompsonTwins · 02/01/2012 07:11

Don't ask me about Prosecco. I slightly overindulged on NYE and used the last half bottle to cook the chicken last evening (tasted great). Sorry, TMI, I would normally be delighted if anyone brought Prosecco to my house. Have a great time!

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 02/01/2012 07:22

i've had really good champagne, my sisters ex husbands family produced champagne and it really was fantastic. i've also had plenty of cheap champagne (cheap though still very overpriced to buy in england). i'd chose prosecco over cheap champagne any day. i really like it. hope you took it.

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 02/01/2012 07:24

by cheap champagne i mean the kind of stuff you can buy here for £20-25. i honestly believe a £10 bottle of prosseco is nicer and better quality.

much the same as if you are going to spend £8 on a bottle of wine you'd be better off buying a nice rioja than something french because spanish good wine is cheaper than french good wine.

cava is shite though - why can't the spanish do good bubbly?

EttiKetti · 02/01/2012 07:24

Take the Moet, its revolting, Prosecco much nicer - save that for you two!

WilsonFrickett · 02/01/2012 14:24

Cava is much nicer in Spain though Santa, and tons cheaper. I think they send the rubbish over here, leaving the lovely 3 Euro bottles of scrummy yumminess for themselves. And who can blame them emoticon?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 02/01/2012 18:39

I think there are more shite Proseccos about than there are crappy Cavas but my opinion is probably based on my preference for moussey bubbles such as you get with a decent Champagne or other wines produced using the same method.

Prosecco can be nice enough though, so YANBU (or YWNBU!).

SantaIsAnAnagramOfSatan · 02/01/2012 19:39

no idea what the proper language is but i prefer sharp fine bubbles and dryness. i also don't like the yellowy colour and flavour of cava and bad champagne.

i've only tried a couple of proseccos and both 'brands' have been lovely and dry with a lovely fine sharp fizz.

wilson good point. i never had any cava when i was in madrid last winter - next time i'll make a point of it.
