AIBU to think this was pretty rude?

on my break at work today, 5 or 6 other people in staff room, manager comes in with 2 bottles of bubbly and says they're for anyone who wants to have a wee cup with lunch, as a thank you for working hard this year.

I thought 'ah that's nice' but as soon as he left everyone started complaining about the fact that he'd only got 2 bottles. to be fair, there are around 50 employees (only around 15 working today though) but..AIBU to think IT'S THE THOUGHT THAT COUNTS?

I'm not particularly fond of my boss and no one else is overly either but I felt quite sad for him. He did something nice that he didn't have to do and that should be enough. Shouldn't it? It was more of a gesture than 'here, everyone get pissed on me'.

At least they didn't say it to his face!

Hmm. It does seem stingy to me.

GypsyMoth · 31/12/2011 21:36

I think the gesture was nice

MorrisZapp · 31/12/2011 21:37

Dunno the background but I'd say YANBU. I've been on christmas nights out with free booze at lavish West End venues with moaning workmates. For some people, moaning is just the default position.

frownieface · 31/12/2011 21:38

It is the thought that counts, so yanbu in thinking the reaction to the bubbly from the other staff was rude.

thefirstmrsrochester · 31/12/2011 21:38

It was a nice thing for him to do and the moaning sods didnt need to drink it if they didnt appreciate the gesture.

somedayma · 31/12/2011 21:39

yeh that's what I thought :(

MaisyMooCow · 31/12/2011 21:41

Lovely gesture from the boss imo.

LeBOF · 31/12/2011 21:41

I'm sure the gesture came from a nice place, but he'd have been better just coming in and thanking everyone for their work- two bottles barely wets the mouth of the people present, so he shot himself in the foot really: it was bound to get that reaction.

thefirstmrsrochester · 31/12/2011 21:42

for what its worth, I was working today & my boss had left cava to be passed round & folk were complaining that it wasnt rose cava! One persons loss is anothers gain - the few of us who were happy with anything had a pleasant afternoon sipping the non rose cava.
No pleasing some folk, is there?

ZillionChocolate · 31/12/2011 21:43

You get 6 flutes from a bottle, so that was enough for 12 people to have a glass. Maybe he had more stashed away for when other people had their lunch break. I agree they were rude, YANBU.

FredFredGeorge · 31/12/2011 21:44

If they're to be drunk during the work, then 2 bottles between 5 or seems pretty reasonable 2 glasses each, not sure more would be a great idea so the amount is not too unreasonable. So no YANBU they're just stingy gits.

EmmaBemma · 31/12/2011 21:46

2 bottles for 15 people is a bit stingy, but it was a nice gesture. Assuming a couple of people weren't drinking, almost everyone would have been able to have a glass.

ReduceRecycleRegift · 31/12/2011 21:47

I think that's enough for 7 per bottle to have a symbolic sip. was a nice thought . You don't need a full glass each at lunch time at work!

somedayma · 31/12/2011 21:50

I know, i don't know what people were expecting? A boozy lunch at his expense and then back to work?!

OP posts:
amerryscot · 31/12/2011 21:52

2 bottles is fine for 15 people who are otherwise working.

EmmaBemma · 31/12/2011 21:52

I'd like a full glass! What's the point of champagne if not to feel at least a bit tipsy? I don't drink it for the taste, that's for sure.

noyouhavehadaweeintheeggnog · 31/12/2011 21:52

well been as though they at work i think it was a nice sentiment and they could hardly expect to get pissed anyway if they had work to do and had to drive home etc....

RaPaPaPumPumBootyMum · 31/12/2011 21:55

I also think it was a nice gesture.

I mean you said he was the manager not the owner of the company...

If he had been the owner [and the company had turned a reasonable profit for him] I would have thought this was a bit stingy.

But from a fellow employee, albeit the manager, this was a thoughtful gesture.

Some people are just never pleased though and will find fault with everything.

Or maybe they just don't like him very much.

Xmasbaby11 · 31/12/2011 21:55

YANBU. It's enough for a small glass, and you wouldn't want more than that at lunchtime.

Different if it was after work and he was expecting all 50 people - now that would be stingy!

InExcelsisDeo · 31/12/2011 23:17

50 thimbles to go with it perhaps?

somedayma · 01/01/2012 10:10

A thimble would be enough! I thought it was a nice gesture :)

FetchezLaVache · 01/01/2012 10:22

At a party, 2 bottles between 15 would be unforgivably stingy, but this was at work! A bit sparse, but a nice gesture nonetheless.

hackmum · 01/01/2012 10:28

He didn't have to do anything at all, did he? So in this case it's the thought that counts.

Proudnscary · 01/01/2012 10:29

Tight arse - I could drink both bottles on my own and still be fit for work

LynetteScavo · 01/01/2012 10:33

I thought you were supposed to get 7 glasses of champagne out of one bottle.

So not that stingy. Did they complain about the quality of the champagne too?
