Person who shall remain nameless had me Angry.

Dd4 (asd) had caught nits. I found it in time and it has been treated and cleared , and has not spread to any of the other children.

Phoned around everyone who has been in recent contact with dd4 to inform them , and ask them to do head checks on their children ( and themselves) .
Have even offered to buy them treatments if they need it.
Most people were very nice about it actually .

Except one nutter who told us that it's ok ,as she washes her ds with voseene shampoo , but she doesn't really care as all kids have nits anyway .

No wonder nits keep doing the rounds if thats the attitude of some parents .

It's not hard to run a bone comb through when your bathing the dcs is it ?
Am I bu ?

Nope, YANBU. But the numpties who believe in Vosene are all over the bloody country.
I'd love it if someone offered to pay for Hedrin for my lot!

chateauferret · 30/12/2011 01:41

We got Hedrin on the quickie prescription service at the chemist's, so shouldn't cost anything for kids or in Scotland, etc.

lollilou · 30/12/2011 01:59

Vosene is doing the trick with my Ds no nits since we started using it BUT every bathtime I use a ton of conditioner with the nitty gritty comb followed by the vosene shampoo. Since using the Vosene no nits but I wouldn't stop the comb through, just in case.

kreechergotstuckupthechimney · 30/12/2011 06:54

YANBU. DD hasn't had nits for about six months thank goodness. Her last lot coincided with being friends with a delightful girl whose hair moved.
At her current school, someone has them because we keep getting vague texts. Name and shame I say.
When we lived in Thailand, the school nurse would do a twice weekly head check. Anyone found to be cooty would have the nurse stand by their chair and a letter sent home.
Peer pressure at its best Grin

south345 · 30/12/2011 06:56

In england you get hedrin free from chemists on the minor ailments scheme.

elliejjtiny · 30/12/2011 07:13

My DS1 is either a nit magnet or one of his friends at school isn't being treated. I'm seriously considering sending him to school in a swimming cap next term.

Just as a side issue - Minor Ailments services are not available everywhere in England - they are services commissioned locally by PCTs. Not every PCT will commission, some will commission for the whole area or in the case of the town I live and work in you have to be registered with a GP and live in the most deprived area of the town.

Who know's what will happen in 2013 when the PCTs cease to exist? A national scheme like Scotland would be nice! The Minor Ailments service will probably fall under Urgent Care, the budget for this will be held by the GPs or possibly the Foundation Trusts who are not known for their fondness for community pharmacy!

Head lice will be different again - it could fall under public health and we may get services from Public Health England or Local Councils - will there be any money?

In reality - it's a mess, minor ailments services are being decommissioned all over the country in an attempt to save money and it's the patients who suffer.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 30/12/2011 08:32

I use that vosene shampoo with nit repellant and my DS has (thankfully) never had nits. I use the comb and conditioner too though and have never seen one.

He'll probably get them next term now I've said that, just to spite me Grin.

YouOldSlag · 30/12/2011 09:32

We use Vosene head lice dterrent shampoo, but on the grounds it's a deterrent, not a prevention. Big difference. And yes, like other posters, we still do comb and check. Both mine had nits last term and I treated within 30 minutes of spotting one and did me and DH to be sure.

Nobody is immune but if you do the above you will at least be on top of things.

needanewname · 30/12/2011 09:35

I might be being a bit thick here, but those who the vosene shampoo and comb through the hair, do you really think its the shampoo??

ceebeegeebies · 30/12/2011 09:40

We have been using the Vosene shampoo since April (when my 2 DC had their first and only bout of nits) and neither of them have had them since - am sure it is a coincidence but makes me feel better Wink

I don't comb through (they are boys with shortish hair).

However, I know the shampoo does not prevent it but if it makes their hair even slightly more unattractive to nits, then it is worth it Grin

PaulaMummyKnowsBest · 30/12/2011 09:43

forget the shampoo..... just use the nitty gritty

I have found this to be the beat way at keeping my children clear from headlice

cantpooinpeace · 30/12/2011 09:48

I use the shampoo and combing. No nits yet.

TheFallenMadonna · 30/12/2011 09:55

perhaps they were just being nice and downplaying the possibility that your child had passed on their nits?

southeastastra · 30/12/2011 09:57

i use vosene but because ds has gunky hair Grin and comb through every week. would be a little Hmm if someone rang me up to report nits tbh - we check weekly anyway

Fourcatsonthebed · 30/12/2011 10:19

My mum swears it is the hairspray she insists she sprays on DDs hair that has meant she got through primary school with no nits. I reckon it helps that her hair is tied back as well but i cant stop with the hairspray in case i jinx the luck!

TheMonster · 30/12/2011 10:34

I have caught nits from pupils at school (I'm a teacher) because there will always be people that cannot be bothered to treat their kids.

sheepgomeep · 30/12/2011 10:37

All you lot swearing by the vosene shampoo its much more likely to be the conditioner and the combing through with the nit comb thats keeping the nit comb at bay rather than the actual shampoo.

I have used vosene by itself no combing and was infested with nits.

used in conjuction with conditioner and nit comb, nit population cut right down.

sheepgomeep · 30/12/2011 10:38

sorry should read.. keeping the NITS at bay not the nit comb!

droves · 30/12/2011 11:15

I'm all for using any shampoo if you feel that it will deter nits , as long as you continue to comb and conditioner.

With headlice it's always better to go for all out war on the little feckers.

Deterrent spray ...( tea tree , lavender and neem oil droped into kids detangler spray).
Nitty gritty and conditioner every hair wash.
Electronic zappy comb on returning home from school/ playmates.

Headrin if lice found.

And dd still caught them.

I strongly believe after nuclear war the only things that will survive are cockroaches and headlice.

What's the point a to headlice anyway? , there serve no purpose other than to piss parents off and make kids itchy. Eeuugh.

OP posts:
droves · 30/12/2011 11:20

I always ring round to tell if anyone of my kids have nits.

It's only fair , I think if you tell then others are extra vigil lent in the head checks and the kids don't spread it around so much.

Not everyone checks their kids every day.

OP posts:
OpinionatedMum · 30/12/2011 11:22

How do I go about getting hedrin free? (england)

DD gets them from school on a regular basis Angry

droves · 30/12/2011 11:26

I'm in Scotland . Up here you just take the lousy child to,chemist and the give you the stuff...have to be registered with the children's minorn ailments scheme, not sure how it works down in England.
Maybe you should go to gp ? I know you can get nitty gritty combs on prescription sometimes.

OP posts:
perceptionreality · 30/12/2011 11:27

YANBU but not much you can do if the mum can't be bothered except tell your dcs not to touch heads with them!

I use the nitty gritty comb - I find that excellent. It got rid of all dd's when she had them.
