To wonder how newbies stumble across AIBU?

I've been here nearly two years now, so not a newbie but probably someone that noone knows.

However, I am always amazed when a newbie starts a thread in AIBU as a first thread, I mean how do they find it?

I found mumsnet when googling HG and found some lovely pregnancy threads and stuck around.

But really anyone sitting there thinking 'oh heck so and so is a knobber' where on the Internet can I post about it!' and then stumbling across this topic? It's rather coincidental isn't it?

So how do they find it?

I think the Daily Mail recommends Mumsnet.

I suppose they lurk for a while and get to know how things work before starting a thread, that's what I did although not in AIBU.

toweraboveyou · 29/12/2011 22:25

Precariously?

brightermornings · 29/12/2011 22:26

It was recommended to me. I've been here a year. Never started a thread too scared!!

I found mumsnet when researching ski holidays. It took me to a review in Travel, and from there I found AIBU, which was generally much more amusing.

WorraLiberty · 29/12/2011 22:27

Alphabetically it's the first on the forums list

storminamanger · 29/12/2011 22:28

I'd never considered lurkers! Active convo's got me clicking into AIBU!

I came looking for pregnancy advice and the thread about making a sign for the woman who drives through another woman's village was recommended. Have been hooked ever since!

slowburner · 29/12/2011 22:33

I was a pretty active member of another parenting website before the moderators there got on my wick by being a cliquey bunch of high and mighty righteous old bags and I decamped. First thing I did was look up where the interesting conversations took place! I don't really 'chat' about parenting per se, we're all different, babies and children are all different, most debates about parenting styles lead to huffiness and playground name calling so this is a good place.

As for being scared. Why? Worse that can happen is that you'll be remembered as the one that joined in not knowing the rules, so it goes wrong, get a new user name!

I was looking for advice and support on being a step-mum and found MN, have been lurking in step-parenting for about a year and just started navigating around the different boards, finally decided to join on Monday Grin, find the AIBU board amusing so tend to read but not post

randommoment · 29/12/2011 22:35

AIBU is far more entertaining than Chat by and large. Simple.

ilovethewinchesterbrothers · 29/12/2011 22:35

this is my first post....i found AIBU when i googled mumsnet-its one of the boards they recommend. i love how some of it has made me laugh so much over this christmas hols.

CurlyJims · 29/12/2011 22:35

I got directed to mumsnet when googled a question for advice on something pregnancy related, from there I used to click on last 15 mins conversation and read the AIBU posts which were always more interesting than anything else!!!

AdeleVBW · 29/12/2011 22:35

I came along because someone I 'know' from another forum came on here, started a thread and got flamed so I thought I'd have a look at these hellcats ;-) I googled Mumsnet, got asked if I wanted the mobile site (I'm on my phone), & when I clicked 'Active' a load of AIBU threads came up.

QOD · 29/12/2011 22:37

Active convo is still my favourite entry!

RainboweBrite · 29/12/2011 22:38

Same as iborolass for me. I have been a member for 5 months, but lurked on and off for years, so familiar with the site. I have only started a few thread so far.

TwelfthNightIsComing · 29/12/2011 22:41

I was on Babyworld for a while and couldn't stand any of someone in my AN group. So when she complained about "those bitches on Mumsnet" I thought it was well worth a look Grin

Then I got banned from there anyway for linking to the BLW blog.

ILoveSanta · 29/12/2011 22:42

Someone I know pointed me this way!

granarybeck · 29/12/2011 22:42

I joined mumsnet about 6 years ago before there was a AIBU topic, I must admit I still find it strange how people post normal questions in there rather than in chat etc; things like 'AIBU to ask ..' and then a regular question rather than just asking it. I guess as people have said it gets more traffic than other topics.

HexagonalQueenOfTheSummer · 29/12/2011 22:43

I joined a couple of years ago; a friend told me about the AIBU section and I just posted on here for ages but now I post on other parts too

LRDtheFeministDragon · 29/12/2011 22:44

I didn't even realize there was more to Mumsnet than AIBU for a long time! Blush

It's the first thing that comes up when you search for the site, so if someone says 'go look at Mumsnet', you'll end up there.

I promise, I'd started threads and replied and got properly stuck in before I found my way to Chat or Relationships or anything else. So AIBU is my spiritual home.

CocktailQueen · 29/12/2011 22:48

Click on 'the last 15 mins' link and most of those messages are in AIBu - that's how I found it!
