If you own/mortgage your own home which you are living in, can I ask if you have your boiler properly serviced every year? We don't and have now found out that we are not covered by our homeserve insurance (that we have had for years, and pay every bloody month, guess which dd im cancelling!). FFS, now will have to get an engineer out and god knows how much that'll cost.

Errrm nope!

Is the servicing free? Or covered by home insurance? Gah maybe I need to look into this!!

rootietootie · 29/12/2011 14:47

If you take out the HomeCare with British Gas (about £18 a month) they will carry out an annual service for you. That way you are covered for repairs/call outs and get a regular service.

rootietootie · 29/12/2011 14:49

The insurance is supposed to cover us in case boiler/central heating breaks down. Which it has. Just called and because we don't have it serviced every year we are excluded. (so i've been paying for fuck all!) I dont know anyone who owns their house who services their boiler.

We always do. I've lived with a broken boiler before and thought it worthwhile.

marriedandwreathedinholly · 29/12/2011 14:50

We have the boiler serviced every year but not the Homeserve insurance. The servicing cleans the boiler, ensures it conforms to H&S, all the radiators get bled and the pressurised water tank gets repressured.

Most insurance required regular maintenance. When I lost a diamond from my engagement ring it was touch and go whether the insurance would cover it because I hadn't had the claws on the ring checked for damage regularly.

mrsmaltesers · 29/12/2011 14:51

I get mine serviced twice a year ( and that's not a euphemism) by the man that installed it. The two times it went dicky were really stressful it has been fine since it's looked at twice a year etc etc

MrsHoolie · 29/12/2011 14:52

Yes it's serviced by British Gas....included in the care plan thing they do.
However,I am going to cancel it and pay someone to service it every year as I think it's rip off.
A neighbour if mine is a corgi gas engineer so I'll get him to do it in future.

rootietootie · 29/12/2011 14:52

Santascave, thats like being kicked when im already down :) we were with BG but stopped when the bank persuaded me to upgrade my account and part of the package was the boiler/central heating insurance with them. No service included tho. Is annoying because we actually have a annual service voucher which we bought off groupon and have not used yet.

porcamiseria · 29/12/2011 14:53

no we dongt, servicer it I mean. one day it will die and it will cost me 1000000s. I know that sadly :-(

rootietootie · 29/12/2011 14:54

My brother in law was corgi/is whatever they changed too, and he checked out our boiler last month, as he was taking radiators off walls for us and he said everything was fine. But because i dont have certificates it counts for shit :)

I have had my boiler for 8 years and only have it serviced twice. I don't have insurance. My mum gets her boiler hob and 2 gas fires serviced every year.

We have ours serviced every year, most people I know do.

Fuzzywuzzywozabear · 29/12/2011 15:12

yes, I have my boiler serviced every year - same as I do the car

RidingInTheMidnightBlue · 29/12/2011 15:17

Boiler is less than two years old, so no. Probably should start...

gallicgreetings · 29/12/2011 15:17

We have ours done every year too. Previously by the guy that installed it but my dad did it this year as he happened to be visiting when the service was due. Might as well put him to work!

Mind you, it's a good point about the insurance because I'm not sure if the guarantee depends on a yearly service.

WorrisomeHeart · 29/12/2011 15:26

Yep we do. It's only 4 years old and our old one died one Jan - we had no hot water for almost 2 weeks so we are determined not to let anything happen to this one!!

TheyCallMeMimi · 29/12/2011 15:27

For 15 years we paid the local co who installed our boiler about £80 or £90 for annual service. Callouts were extra. We then switched to Scottish & southern - cost £12 per month for annual service including any callouts. Paid it for 2 months then boiler broke down. Had multiple callouts as a result - bargain! (except the boiler was broken beyond repair and we had to get a new one in the end).

baubleybobbityhat · 29/12/2011 15:27

If its not really an aibu why have you posted in aibu?

GrendelsMum · 29/12/2011 15:28

We plan to... it might not necessarily happen, but we do plan to. Ours is getting rather elderly and the boiler man has warned us that we need to start saving up to replace it.

VirgoGrr · 29/12/2011 15:31

YABU to bother paying Homeserve. They love to take your money, but try actually getting any work done if your heating breaks down - not a chance. There are so many exclusions in their insurance, I don't think anyone actually is covered. Boiler insurance is the next PPI scandal waiting to happen IMO.

TheFallenMadonna · 29/12/2011 15:31

What is homeserve insurance?

Our boiler is serviced annually.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 29/12/2011 15:31

We do have it serviced it every so often, usually about 18 months. Howver, our inusrance has just changed to requiring evidence of servicing too, which I only happened to notice by chance when it was renewed just before Christmas. I think advance warning would have been good, as we were aready over the 12 months at that point.

craftynclothy · 29/12/2011 15:36

Hmm I'm probably about to cancel our Homeserve policy because I think we can get cheaper cover via our energy provider.

Are you sure your Homeserve policy didn't include an annual service? Ours certainly did and I think we are on the cheapest one they offer. They did 'forget' the first year (they say they'll arrange it between April & September and when we'd heard nothing by the end of August we phoned them to insist on it)
