If you own/mortgage your own home which you are living in, can I ask if you have your boiler properly serviced every year? We don't and have now found out that we are not covered by our homeserve insurance (that we have had for years, and pay every bloody month, guess which dd im cancelling!). FFS, now will have to get an engineer out and god knows how much that'll cost.

Yes we do. Serviced yearly and it's quite clear in the insurance papers that it needs to be for it to be covered Sad

We don't. The people I know who do get their boilers serviced seem to have more problems with theirs than those who don't! I am working on the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" basis.

Fabby, I've never heard of such a requirement for selling a house. How do barely habitable auction properties change hands if that is the case?

OP, challenge the insurers. If the wording just says that it needs to be maintained, tell them it is. If the ts and cs don't state that you need certs then fight them on it. With most insurance companies the first person you speak to is there to try to find a reason not to pay the climb. Go up the company ladder and be persistent.

Yes. Every year without fail.

I don't have Homeserve insurance though. I just have the heating whacked up all the time so daren't risk it not working.

Eurochic, did challenge it and their said it was in t&c so I asked them to send out a copy. apparently that department was not able bullshit and I have to go into my bank branch were I purchased it. So phoned up and bank and they are sending out the policy pack which I received when I took out the policy. If it is the same one as online then they are gonna get an earful. Although it does turn out that I am thick as shit and my boiler isnae broken after all. Apparently there is an eco button that someone, not me :) pressed, and this makes the ignition go on and off. And even resetting it does not put it on, so crisis averted.

I pay a monthly fee, part of which is to have it serviced once a year. Cant imagine poayng a monthly fee but not having it serviced, how does the insurer ensure it works?

4madboys · 30/12/2011 19:27

yep we get ours serviced once a year and then i put the certificate in with all the paperwork from the boiler (its only 4 yrs old) for the first two years the company that fitted it came back and did a free check, just a thing they do to try and keep your custom i guess! but since then we have got someone else in, just because the company that orgionally fitted it were busy adn the new co we used were recomnded by a friend and they came round one evening actually to fit us in, they were really lovely and so will now use them each time. think it was about £70 totally worth it for safety sake and so that our house insurance is valid. it can affect house insurance NOT just boiler insurance so worth checking yoru policy!

We also have BGas cover with servicing as part of it.

Over the 5 years have just about broken even.... with servicing, thermostat, valve, switch between water/radiators and the magnetic sludge remover all being replaced. We have their plumbing cover too which was handy for a leak in the old water tank and the outside waste pipe splitting, as well as a completely seized up stopcock.

CarolCervix · 30/12/2011 19:46

Yes. every year in the autumn. same as the car.

it cost ££££££ so i don't want it packing up for the sake of a bit of limescale or small replacable bit.

larakitten · 30/12/2011 19:54

Yep, every year. We just had a new boiler fitted in the early spring though.....but will still service it annually. We have home emergency cover on our insurance which states that the boiler must be serviced every year. Our previous boiler was leaching CO into the kitchen which was picked up at a service - proves the point that even with monitors etc you still need to look after your boiler for safety.
Mind you, we have a wonderful plumber who doesn't mind when we call him on a saturday night when he's in the pub and I'm flapping stressed that the boiler will explode not fire.......Blush

I had crapola service from British Gas. Would never use them. Don't call them out now that something is wrong. They charge a fortune.
