to think that people who 'enjoy' horror films are just a little bit fucked up?

Maybe I am just an oversensitive person but I find watching my fellow man being terrified, screaming and then horribly killed, with blood and guts spewing, just a bit offensive! I am aware it is not real (plenty of real stuff in the news which is just as bad) but just having these images in my head upsets me. DH says he just forgets it when it's finished - he's currently watching 'Devil', some fucked up film about a devil in a lift Hmm. Most of the dramas and films these days are about people getting murdered, getting killed or being dead. It is so mainstream.

I mean where do these film makers get these ideas? Surely they should be committed? Are we all supposed to have this 'dark' side that they make into 'art'? Where is the entertainment in having horrifying images in your head?

I remember watching 'Changeling' a few years back thinking it was about a woman who's son disappears and who is then given a 'ringer' back by the police. I was totally unprepared for the scene in which young boys (my DSs age) were shown being axed to death. Fucked me up for months weeks and I was watching it alone. I remember shouting at the screen, please tell me that did'nt happen but apparently it did.

I don't know. Am I abnormal?

That's it basically - it's fine not to want to watch horror films or read horror novels; each to their own. But to think that disliking horror media makes you morally superior is daft.

southeastastra · 30/12/2011 21:48

i remember reading about the changeling when it came out and decided i really didn't need to watch the film, was based on a true story though wasn't it?

i think i am alot more sensitive to some films now and i won't watch them. i don't mind silly horror with bright red blood like old hammer films and love films based on the supernatural. cannot stand slasher films or films like hostel now though. so agree with op there.

saying that there is a real lack of good scary films being made, the awakeneing is one i fancy but our local flicks have decided to ignore it!

ladyasriel - if you don't find small boys being buggered upsetting, then that's your thing - but I did and still do and wouldn't recommend the book to anyone. Nothing beautiful about it. So have your Confused face back.

Zombi · 31/12/2011 09:30

I've been away from this thread for a few days because mu phone simply refused to load it, but I would like to reply to Thumbinnapudding's rather simplistic statement above:

'' ladyasriel - if you don't find small boys being buggered upsetting, then that's your thing - but I did and still do and wouldn't recommend the book to anyone. Nothing beautiful about it. So have your face back. ''

People watch horror movies to be frightened and to be shocked. Whrnever I see a scene like that mentioned above I get awfully upset and wonder why I stuck the thing on- til I get to the part where the person meeting out the abuse is dealt a most satisfying cummupence. It might not come til the sequel but it usually always does. And if it doesn't it's a strk reminder to the viewer that sometimes the bad guy gets away with it.

Your thinly-vielled attemp to make ladyastriel look like a padeo shows a deep lack of understanding and over-eagerness to put the scene you're discussing into your own context.

I'm not saying that I don't enjoy gore- I actually do ( me it's scarier than horror because these things are far more likely to happen to you than your doll coming alive and killing your Aunt maggie!)

I'm just saying that when something awful and disturbing happens, you're usually left satisfied that it was integral to the story and well dealt with.

I think you people are being too literal and are maybe a bit fucked up yourselves.

Zombi · 31/12/2011 09:33

Incidentally, I rather ejoyed filth.

Zombi · 31/12/2011 09:35

I should make it clear that my above statement applies to both books and film.

boglach · 31/12/2011 09:44

Thumbinnapuddingwitch - your last statement was pathetic

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 31/12/2011 11:25

I wasn't in any way attempting to make ladyasriel look like a paedo - how did you read that into it??? Confused
How bizarre.

I found the book intensely upsetting and disturbing because of the child sex abuse included. It is the thing that remains with me out of the whole book. The OP would probably not appreciate reading it because of those things. LadyAsriel was surprised I said that, so I expanded on why I had said it. That is all.

Zombi · 31/12/2011 14:34

How did I read that into it? Your highly simplistic comment about her enjoying little boys getting buggered. It's not a huge leap.

Moving on... DH bought me Cube 1 and 2 today. I think Cube was out before Saw but Saw is somehow considered the pioneer in real-life horror.

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 31/12/2011 14:36

I did not SAY she enjoyed little boys being buggered though. I said if she didn't find it upsetting, then that was her thing, because I couldn't think of an appropriate word to use instead of thing! It's a hell of a leap to go from "didn't find it upsetting" to "enjoying it"!!

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 31/12/2011 14:47

Look, I have to go to bed now (different timezone) so to save any further argybargy I will apologise unreservedly to ladyasriel for any confusion over what I said - I absolutely did NOT mean to imply that she had dodgy feelings about child sex abuse, was just surprised that she found my dislike of it weird on this thread. I admit I failed to express myself clearly (didn't realise at the time) and will leave it now.

DoMeDon · 31/12/2011 15:10

Noone said anyone enjoyed little biys being buggered - no apology needed Thumb. Hiding thread now due to people going off deep end about some really disturbing stuff Hmm
