Rubbish date on turkeys in asda

mrsshears · 23/12/2011 14:12

I have just been to asda to do a basics shop, fruit, veg, tins etc when i noticed the fresh turkeys were a decent price so i thought i might get one, until i saw all of them were either use by 25th or 26th of december!!
Aibu to think they must have been sat there for ages and not buy one?

Do you want it for Christmas dinner?

If you do, then YABU ,christmas is on the 25th Xmas Wink

Kayano · 23/12/2011 14:15

... Presumably you will be using them on 25?
Don't understand the problem

mrsshears · 23/12/2011 14:20

Hmm maybe it's just me then,i just think they can't be very fresh with only a couple of days date on,which puts me off.

cece · 23/12/2011 14:39

I think you will find that most shops have dates like this on their turkeys.

mrsshears · 23/12/2011 14:43

ugh! maybe i might re-think then,i'm currently 4 months pregnant and i think this is making me worse.

Proudnscary · 23/12/2011 14:45

I thought you were going to say they had a pre Christmas sell by date - this is a non story folks, move along.

Sirzy · 23/12/2011 14:45

I would be concerned if fresh meat had a long date on it!

goingtoofast · 23/12/2011 14:45

Sainburys is the same. They only start getting them in a few days before Christmas and most do have 26th.

SantieMaggie · 23/12/2011 14:46

all the supermarkrts are the same

Theas18 · 23/12/2011 14:49

That a bit short dated. In theory it's fine, but I've had "in date" by a day or so chick that has been wiffly (I think wiffly might still be OK if you rinse it, but it makes me a bit wary to sday the least!)

ReduceRecycleRegift · 23/12/2011 14:54

well yes but people have been expecting fresh (not frozen) chucks to be in stock for the last 2 weeks! you have (had) alternatives, get one when they first came in with long dates and freeze it (I did that), order it from the batch being delivered for the pre-orders today and tomorrow, buy frozen.

Not sure what the shops should do? pump em full of preservatives? people want shelves of turkeys from mid dec

ReduceRecycleRegift · 23/12/2011 14:57

"Aibu to think they must have been sat there for ages "

Yes, its fresh, raw, plucked/prepared uncooked poultry. We are so used to food being pasturised and pumped full of chemicals that we forget what it is IMO

Chattymummyhere · 23/12/2011 15:02

Not as bad as the Veg at tesco went in on wednesday it was all use by the 22nd or 23rd Xmas Shock

Anniegetyourgun · 23/12/2011 15:04

YABU to be thinking about turkey. Dull, dull stuff. Look at all the stuff they have to put on, in and around it to make it seem like a meal worthy of Christmas; how much basting it needs, or how much butter injected (ugh), to stop it resembling sawdust. Get some proper meat in, woman! A traditional side of British roast beef is real midwinter fare. And you can have Yorkies with it.

Unfortunately we have to have turkey this year, as my sister is buying the entire meal and helping us cook it, which is nice, but the price we have to pay is that she won't hear of not eating turkey. "It would just feel wrong." Why, honestly? People are just like sheep when it comes to (manufactured) traditions (in years gone by the rich would have beef, the poor goose). Speaking of sheep, I likes a nice leg o' lamb too...

mungojerrie · 23/12/2011 15:11

I have a friend who works at a warehouse that stocks sainsbo, asda, m&s 'fresh' turkeys. All the turkeys have been kept at just above freezing point for over a month before being delivered to store..... not very fresh at all when you think about it...

mrsshears · 23/12/2011 15:16

annie if it were down to me we would'nt be having turkey,i lost the majority vote Sad

You could go to your local farm shop next year. People could order turkeys from August, I saw the sign near the turkey pen. Luckily the turkeys can't read.

MigratingChestnutsOnAnOpenFire · 23/12/2011 15:26

I like goose or duck and it is so easy to cook.

JollyJinglyJoo · 23/12/2011 15:29

I'm always suspicious of supermarket poultry anyway.

I'm with Annie- just picked up my huuge beef fillet from the butcher for my Beef Wellington- yum!!

Trifle · 23/12/2011 15:56

I bought an asda turkey crown last year and it was by far the worst turkey ever. It had a strange taste to it, really unpleasant. I'd actually bought two a few weeks apart and both had the same awful taste. Dont buy one whatever you do, they are ghastly.

mrsshears · 23/12/2011 16:05

Just about to leave to go to mark's and see if we have any luck there.
Anyone ever had a marks and spencer turkey? any good?

Hi

Im new 1st post! I am up for a rant about Asda and the use by dates. I went in last night and it was carnage! Normally I do check the use by dates but I was just so peed off with people being rude that I wanted to get out asap! Most of the frest stuff I bought lastnight has useby of today! Its my own fault really but you would think they would reduce them or something

We're going to have a M&S turkey, but by the time I can tell you about it it will be too late to help you (setting aside the fact that it can't be that good if it's turkey, as already discussed).

On second thoughts I think I'm going round to JollyJinglyJoo's for Christmas. Beef Wellington sounds goooooood.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 23/12/2011 16:18

The best before date just applies to the cooking... You can still eat it cold after this date.
