Christmas cakes/biscuits hand-baked by neighbors..unreasonable to throw away?

I do not like eating hand-baked goodies from the neighbors...at all Wink

Every year, masses and masses is given to our family for the Christmas season.

I haven't seen their kitchens nor do I know if they wash their hands etc, I would prefer to know they are clean before giving them to the children.

This is possibly totally irrational and un-kind, I just can't do it though.

Reading it back I look vile ...I know Blush

Would you eat baked goods, not really knowing the source?

AIBU to just slide the whole lot in to the trash?

Actually, I would like to be told I am...there is so much, the children are eyeing it up even though I thought I had hidden it from them

For heavens sakes... in the kindest possible way, get a grip. If it has been baked in the oven, any possible germs have been decimated. Nobody ever died from eating cake!

Sillyoldelf · 22/12/2011 00:38

I think yabu and unkind . I have put a lot of hard work and thought into home baking gifts this year ( including neighbour ). I am a nurse and am fastidiously clean . What values are you role modelling for your children by your behaviour ? What is wrong with some back to basics Christmas traditions and values .

RobynLou · 22/12/2011 00:39

yabu and slightly loopy.

theincredibequeenofwands · 22/12/2011 00:39

I imagine most of their kitchens are cleaner than a factory........!!

Sillyoldelf · 22/12/2011 00:40

Your children run the risk of growing up to be ungrateful and materialistic with the attitude you are role modelling .

fuzzysnout · 22/12/2011 00:40

Do you really think Mr Kipling always washes his hands?
I heard that sometimes Mrs K doesn't even put on a clean pinny. YABVU

worldgonemad72 · 22/12/2011 00:40

YABu and ungrateful, just tell them you dont want them in the future.

IloveJudgeJudy · 22/12/2011 00:41

YABU. The high baking temperatures would kill nearly all the bugs and I would really not advocate going down this road of thinking you cannot consume things that other people have made. It could make your lives very difficult. Also, it is good for humans to have contact with different germs.

BeeBread · 22/12/2011 00:41

YABU and positively weird.

Here, have a handmade Xmas Biscuit.

Feminine · 22/12/2011 00:41

good! glad to hear I am being HORRIBLE!

I don't want to be mean...I haven't told the kids why.

Its just me.

I am glad to hear the baking will kill the germs thanks squeaky

what about clean hands though?

BTW, you can't say no.

That would be rude.

yes yabu. a few weeks ago i sent a child home from birthday party with homemade (using really great ingredients) birthday cake, plus a special cupcake. had spent a lot of time making them with lots of care and expensive ingredients and they were de - li -cious..only to be told the next day that 'mummy threw it all straight in the bin' i asked why and she said 'dont know, i think mummy mustnt like cake'. Its very hurtful to find out that something you put heart and soul into has been chucked straight in the bin. I specifically made a NICE cake because it is a bit rubbish when you get a shop bought thing in your party bag so I made a fab one. RE: GERMS, jeez, get a grip.

2kidsintow · 22/12/2011 00:45

It isn't just you! I very rarely eat anything handmade that I am given as a gift from friends, or from kids in my class. It isn't for me a hygeine issue though, just a reflection of my immense fussiness. I've even grown my own food, then been unable to eat it for reasons I can't put my finger on.

You may b slightly U....but you are not alone.

Feminine · 22/12/2011 00:45

It is funny on AIBU ...to assume I have told the children my thoughts ...thats why I came here.

you know ...to see how much of a nut I was being.

We live a very simple life, the children are not grabby or greedy.

Xmas Blush I feel the same way Feminine.

bananaistheanswer · 22/12/2011 00:46
Shock

I bake my little heart out at xmas, putting lots of effort into making delicious mouth-watering cookies and give them out instead of cards. 'Tis no easy feat, making hundreds of cookies, bagging them up, adding a little card DD usually writes about 6 then gives up through sheer boredom for each person. It's actual effort and thought put into the gift, along with a personal touch. there is also the fact that I'm skint, and this is a cost effective way of getting round the whole lack of money issue while still being able to give something to everyone we know

Is that really not something that you think of when receiving these gifts?

YABU.

ShengdanRoad · 22/12/2011 00:47

Sorry to have to wheel out the F-word, but get a fucking grip.

squeakytoy · 22/12/2011 00:49

When you buy stuff in a shop, you have absolutely no idea who has breathed over it, not washed their hands, or even spat into it... your neighbour is likely to be more careful than a random employee on a production line.

If we worried all the time, we would starve to death unless we grew it, reaped it, and cooked it!

Feminine · 22/12/2011 00:50

To give more details ...

I live in the US , round here, it is the done thing to distribute them for all the neighbors...they don't personally pick us out to give iyswim?

A massive bake -off in a way.

EduStuckUpTheChimney · 22/12/2011 00:50

YAB a bit U if you have a blanket ban, but there are certain people I know I wouldn't want to eat their cakes. I know they've been baked and whatnot, but they haven't gone straight from the oven to my mouth...

ContraryMartha · 22/12/2011 00:51

Sorry Banana and I know Shengdan, but...but...what if they lick their fingers? Don't wash their hands? Let the kids 'help' without washing hands? Have mice? Etc etc.
shudders

Feminine · 22/12/2011 00:53

squeaky thats why I am none to keen on the bakery either Wink

I don't worry all the time ...its just these Christmas bits.

Thanks all though...I will get a fucking grip then. Grin
